Willy Wonka Theory

Saw this guy's theory about Wonka's chocolate factory being a symbol for Dante's Inferno,

He gets a lot wrong, but I think I've fleshed it out better. All the deadly sins are present, except wrath & lust (which are a little too dark for kids)

Gloop is obviously a glutton, who eats his way to doom. Veruca Salt is clearly consumed with greed, literally chasing her gold into an incinerator.
Violet Beauregarde's sin is pride. (Wanting to be the best & most celebrated) She's punished with ignominy, by being made into an embarrassment, a freak. Mike TV is guilty of sloth, (A tv addicted ne'er-do-well) He gets reduced to almost nothing (A punishment that reflects his worthlessness)

And of course, Charlie himself nearly falls prey to envy. He steals the fizzy lifting drink, & is only redeemed by his pity for Wonka's apparent misery. Therefore, he is elevated from the depths

Hmm interesting theory, and I must admit that I've always thought there was more to that movie than what was presented. The original Gene Wilder version was good, but I must admit that I prefer the Johnny Depp version. Just a thought assuming that you are even remotely correct, then that would make the Oompah Loompahs (Wonka's workers) a bunch of Satan's Little Helpers wouldn't it ??

I guess so. That brings up a question I always had. Where's the lady loompas anyhow? Oompa Loompettes? lol

Anyhow, I actually prefer the Wilder Wonka. Depp's is a good movie, but the portrayal is cartoonish, & somewhere along the way they missed the point that there should be an accessible wonder about Wonka & the factory, awe inspiring... enticing & inviting. Depp's version is just fully creepy all the time. You'd have to wonder why anybody would be anything but uncomfortable around him & it. Wilder's Wonka, seems like a friend, but one with a lesson to impart.

Lady Loompahs, loompettes lol, short answer dunno, but come to think of it....?!

Didn't say that I didn't like the Wilder version, just that I preferred the Depp version. Think that has something to do with the two actors in the lead role. Yes Wilder is good, but my attitude towards him is always clouded by those terrible movies he made with the black guy (whose name I forget, sorry) just too manic for my liking. Johnny Depp on the other hand brings a level of believability to each of his many and diverse roles, and in my opinion that makes his movies better !!

Would that (God help me) be Richard Pryor you're talking about?!?!?! & those movies would be Silver Streak, Stir Crazy, & See No Evil, Hear No Evil? I LOVE those movies lol

Yes Richard Pryor and yes those movies, thanks for filling those blanks, I honestly couldn't remember. No offence intended towards Richard Pryor of course, so why those particular movies ?? Simple enough there's little difference between them - different storylines yes, but virtually identical characters in each, and rather than use the comic potential to get laughs they just go manic, and in my humble opinion ruin something that could have been great. Johnny Depp on the other hand portrays a completely different character in every movie he does (other than Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates movies which is intended as a continuation), and to me that makes the movies fresh, new and watchable. Yes I've watched the Wilder and Pryor movies and probably will do again in the future, but I must admit they're not amongst my top ten favourites, sorry !!

You say they are favourite movies of yours and apologise if I've offended it was unintentional, but as they say different strokes different folks.

That's ok. I'm not offended. I just never knew anyone who didn't enjoy those movies (Silly though they are) & them as a comedic duo. They honestly were intentionally KEEPING the same dynamic between Wilder & Pryor, because people loved them together so much. They even did another lesser known movie after those, called "Another You". In fact, Pryor was originally slated to play the sheriff in Blazing Saddles, with Wilder as well, but couldn't sync up, due to other obligations I believe. So it went to Cleavon Little

I believe the difference you're noting has a lot to do with the fact that Wilder was solely a comedic actor, & that continuity of character he presents was the hallmark of his career. I doubt he'd have been as successful had he abandoned it to engage in a different dynamic. Young Frankenstein, The Producers, The Frisco Kid. He hits those same notes in just about everything, because it worked so very well for him, some would say iconically so

Depp, on the other hand, is not so much known for comedic prowess (Even though he dabbles in it) but rather his hallmark is creating abstract personalities unlike anything people might predict. In the case of Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, I felt it was almost too abstract, in so much that it distracted from the movie as a whole, & the main focus seemed to be on Willy Wonka above all else... which is pretty ironic, that Charlie & the Chocolate Factory seemed more Wonka-centric than Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, which was much more centered on the Charlie story & the phenomenon of the Wonka factory & tickets etc... not so much on the man Wonka himself

You make many good points bro. Don't say I don't like Wilder's movues, just there's little variety between them, now whether that's intentional or not I dunno I just find the similarities rather boring. Johnny Depp's movies I find very watchable, simply because of their freshness (the Pirates movies HAVE to be similar of course, but even then he's able to inject some variety between them, there's also a lot more originality there too). I agree with you that I too expected Pryor to play the sheriff in Blazing Saddles, and that he didn't gave Wilder a chance to show what he could do on his own and I think his performance was far superior than what had gone before, and I think that Pryor in the part would have spoiled the movie - just my own opinion of course - Cleavon Little's sheriff was good, and he certainly made the part his own.

Forgive me but if it's a choice between a Depp movie and a Wilder movie, I would go with Depp every time simple because I would find it more interesting !!

What's unfortunate, is that the people who made Depp Wonka, (Tim Burton & Danny Elfman) are the very same people behind Nightmare Before Christmas, which has TREMENDOUS music. Go figure

There is another thought that occurs to me, it has to do with the Oompah Loompahs and how they all look pretty much the same (Depp movie), which does rather beg the question - did Willy Wonka like to indulge himself in cloning during quiet periods ??

I mean why not, I can see any number of possible advantages - a ready-made workforce, who all know each other and are comfortable together so doing away with the problems associated with a large and diverse group for example. So yes cloning would solve many issues currently affecting the workplace !!
