I didn't even realize they were going to be jumping into it so quickly. I would've need time to plan a trip to L.A.

Ok, this just dropped on me, & I'm a little thrown by it. Apparently, we have enough funds that we are attempting to get Robin Curtis to reprise her role as Saavik in this episode as well. However, she hasn't acted in about a decade & a half. She's actually retired & went into real estate sales...

HERE IN UPSTATE NY! Manlius NY, to be exact, about a 20 minute drive from where I fricking live. If she agrees, we're hoping to record her here in a local recording studio, BUT if that falls through, the fall back plan is to have her record her lines AT MY HOUSE!

I'm a little bugged out by that possibility, frankly, & I'm hoping she'll do the episode, but that we can get professional accommodations, because my place is FAR FROM IT!

This whole turn of events is the strangest thing ever. There's even talk of trying to get James B. Sikking to reprise his role as Captain Styles, the Excelsior captain from Search For Spock. It's just getting unreal. lol

Yesterday we got to record Robin Curtis' lines for Saavik in a studio... Here! In my town, where she currently lives! (well, on the outskirts.) She's a thoroughly fun lady. Way more fun than you'd ever think, given her past characters.

It's been over 25 years since she played the character, & she was concerned that it might not come off right anymore, but do you know what happened then? She started reading into the mic, & it's like we were all transported right back to Star Trek 3. She was THAT spot on, like she hadn't missed a beat. It was amazing. We took pictures & she signed scripts etc... :violet:

Afterward, I got to record my lines there too, but who cares about that? lol

I finally got to hear some of the other actors' readings, & the one sort of sad thing is that apparently Nichelle Nichols had a real struggle. She's getting up in years & it's taking its toll :(
Walter Koenig however, is still as spry & feisty as ever. He's a real hoot. His outakes are hilarious. He's pretty foul mouthed.

And after what has been one of the most amazing performing experiences ever, CBS has finally weighed in on all this Axanar fuckery. I could strangle those Axanar bastards for ruining everything for everyone who did things appropriately

New Rules For Fan-Fiction Productions

Now, seeing that we are historically in violation of rule 1, (We make 60 minute or more episodes) & in our most recent crowd funded endeavor, egregiously in violation of rule 5, (With the hiring of Nichols, Koenig, & Curtis) the only saving grace for us right now is that this staunch edict seems to have been specifically directed at fan FILMS, which we are not (We're only an audio drama) but really... that is a terribly fine line to be treading at this juncture. It's a question none of us are too eager to even probe around about, for fear that any undue attention in that effort would just serve to get us shut down as well. This is basically the shittiest time in the history of fan production to be sitting on what is one of the coolest fan productions we could've hoped for, & while there are those who have invested WAY more into their productions than we have (i.e. Renegades) it is still a pretty heartbreaking disappointment, & a very precarious position to find ourselves in. I don't know if we'll be releasing the best episode we ever made at all :(

It boils down to this. Clearly, no one should've been profiting, i.e. the Axanar jerk paying him self a salary, investing it's funds into his own personal film studio, charging for ad service on his webpages, or even marketing his own brand of merchandise on bloody Amazon, & god only knows what other schemes he'd been running

However, this jerkwad did not come to these transgressions on his own. The line of trust has slowly been pushed back over the years, to the point that even our little show tiptoed slightly into the gray area, on this latest endeavor.

The 1st warning sign was crowd funding. The spirit of any unspoken understanding between copyright holder & fan producers would not really have been approving of such, IMHO. The minute you begin a public campaign to raise outside funds, you invite due scrutiny

The 2nd issue is in casting brand name talent to be in your production, names famously associated with the property, in their perspective roles no less. These are not clear cut violations per say, but it cannot be denied that they are steps into a gray area.

Then there's advertising, even the non-profit type. Even if you stand to make no money from the advertising, you are abusing some trust, if you are appearing on official podcasts, & such, that DO earn, in their own right, & they want you on, because you've gotten attention, & having you is a boon to their own viewership, especially if you're flaunting crowd funding efforts, & your brand name cast.

Then there's the real sticky wicket, IMHO. This brand name talent doesn't just offer up their presence for free! You have to pay them! & despite the fact that their pay is crowd funded, it flies in the very face of what fan production is at its most basic. NO ONE involved in any way is supposed to be making any money here. I really don't know how that one ever slipped by, but it did... a lot, so much so that even we had become so accepting of it, we too tried it on in this last effort. In hindsight, I kind of regret that we did, even though it was a truly amazing experience to be part of.

I still feel like we went forth into it with the truest fan based intentions, but in light of this debacle, it really just feels like we slipped up & fell in with the bad crowd... just a little. This is a all just my opinion though, & I'm not sure how our exec producer is thinking yet, but my recommendation is that we just walk away in a timely manner.

Think about it. If I went out and made a quasi-professional fan-fic production of Pirates of the Caribbean, & cast Orlando Bloom & Keira Knightly in their perspective roles, funding their performances with internet based crowdfunding, & then preceded to plaster it all over the net with more of those funds, in a manner that is almost competitive with the actual studio product, it wouldn't matter in the least whether I made a cent on it myself at all. Disney would keel haul me
