Some people have suggested losing Colbert was worse, but how is that even possible, when Colbert got his start on The Daily Show? Don't get me wrong. Colbert's show was great. It took balls to do that for 10 years, but it was after all a complete satire. Stewart did something no one has ever done. 16 years of genuine, from the heart, world commentary, on a daily basis. He's covered 4 elections with a charm and humor that is completely genuine If they don't transition this just right, it could kill the show |

The problem isn't finding someone as funny or someone as ballsy. The problem is finding someone who can be both challenging & yet likable. People tune into Jon Stewart because he's likeable. They leave impressed because he challenges them. Now, you might be able to find scores of hosts who can do one or the other, but finding one that can do both well enough to keep the ship afloat is a whole other story Take Bill Maher for example. In many cases I agree with what he says, but compared to Jon Stewart, I find him obnoxious, full of himself, & frankly, a bit dim. In short, I think he's a blow hard |

That is the way it works for me too. (and my friends who follow him) As far as I have ever known his news is accurate, and he says to the camera lots of what my own reactions are whatever particular news piece he is doing.... and I never perceive him as being mean. Nor do I perceive him as being tongue in cheek. To me (& friends I'm reasonably sure but it's a good question to ask them as I run into them ) he doesn't 'appear' to be full of 'himself' which allows me to actually pay close attention to the News he is reporting.I dunno what I'm trying to say here. And it is NOT that he makes the news fun for me because he does report on heavy stuff at times, well mostly actually. He does not do frivolous reporting either. Wait. It's that he gives visual, verbal, and facial RESPONSES to the reporting. Like I am doing in my living room watching or reading the same news. That's it, he responds to the news like I often do. Incredulous, or WTF? or awww, etc etc. Is any of this making sense? I know, right? And to me Stewart & Maher are in a similar ballpark in they way they present the news. 'similar', not without big differences. 'similar'. Yeah. Often I do too. And when I run into this I walk away from him for years at a time. And I might even have agreed or respected his point of view about that particular news piece..... but 'he' put me off. And here's the thing with Stewart (I heard yesterday I think from a normally not listened to source of silliness to me): He had time (years) to grow and perfect and mature into who/what/how he's been for a very long time. Whomever follows him, and others who go for this style of news reporting for years to come are always going to be being compared to him right off the bat. Big Shadow, baby, Big Shoes. Which shoes maybe shouldn't be filled after all. But I'll bet they (TPTB) will want to because Stewart's style is what we like and support, and I KNOW there are going to be comedians/writers who will want to, and even be sure they 'can'. And maybe someone can. Someone probably eventually will. But for this first following period of time the urge of viewers like myself will be to not so much see what the replacement brings to the table but how it compares to John Stewart. Brave men and women I'll tell ya. And the Internet will chew them to shreds. omfgoodness. This is the freaking new iterations, new visions, new writers, new directors, new presentations of StarTrek all over again. Well this is just depressing. |

Well, look. He wasn't the 1st host of the show. He clearly won't be the last, and after all, all the show does is have a mock anchor & mock correspondents, who cover news. It's a half hour & the amount of time the "Anchor" does their bit is only maybe several minutes longer than say what they do on SNL's Weekend Update, and there have been many hosts for Weekend Update, some who went on the hosting careers. Hell, one could accuse The Daily Show of stealing the idea from SNL to begin with & expanding it into a half hour format However, The Daily Show is well... DAILY, & where people like that jerkoff Norm McDonald could get away with butchering his way through a couple seasons of weekly "News" segments on SNL, this show has to have someone who can be universally likeable or the whole tone of the thing will tank. Even many of the people who contest Jon's politics, like Bill O'Reilly, actually like Jon. If that doesn't speak to your state of character, what does? I think where we have a problem going forward is in finding someone who can roast some hard comedy & do it with a genuine approachability, someone who has the integrity to admit when he's wrong (& he has been) the balls to go outside his bubble & take it to other people's shows, AND someone who has the ability to make us laugh at our worst issues & the serious bite to make it sting when it should. Despite the fact that John Oliver has it really great in his new job, & probably doesn't have any regrets about leaving when he did, I think WE'LL regret that he left. He was one of a very few people who might have been able to pull that off in Jon's absence. Frankly, Jon is the best at what he does, & it didn't happen overnight. So who ever they get, even if they have the core ingredients to be good at it, will have to take time to develop a method that works for both them & us It's possible it could go wrong in a myriad of ways, but the damn show is a staple of the Comedy Central lineup. They CAN'T bail on it even if it goes to complete shit. They'll just have to keep working out the kinks. They have so little that on that network which is worth a damn. They can't afford to let it derail |

Okay, I realize this is not about The Daily Show, and this is very old (the beginning of January 2006), and though this is Cross Fire that show has nothing to do with this post. I guess I'm fumbling all over trying to say with admiration 'Just 'look' at this guy! Even in this annoying example he demonstrates as Mojochi says Stewart is the best at what he does [with] genuine, from the heart, world commentary [and] with a charm and humor that is completely genuine.' Dang. I'm doing some straight up major gushing aren't I. |

Interestingly enough, Jon's appearance on Crossfire happened in the same year as this That year was a milestone, where the real effects of mockery on the political & media worlds were truly being felt. Colbert spent the following 2 years with maybe the most public mock presidential campaign ever, with the aid of his Super PAC, generating over a million dollars, & another 2 years later they'd held a major rally together Between the 2 of them, they've elevated political satire to a level almost unthinkable. I can't see anyone pulling it off as grandly as that ever again. The Daily Show will go on, but it's very likely to go completely unnoticed in the political & media world, once the transition dust settles. I have a hard time envisioning the lightning striking twice |
