Have to disagree with that analysis, there can be very worthwhile reasons for binge-watching. For instance, someone doing a media studies course at college is likely to watch several episodes as they relate to their studies. Also, I have complete collections of both Voyager and TNG, not to mention a complete collection of the movies as well as others !! Sometimes binge-watching is because we actually ENJOY the programs !! |

I suffer from loneliness sometimes and have been battling depression my whole life. Binge watching is one way I cope with both. I also have self indulgent behavior and tend to binge eat as well. In my case, the loneliness is simply a feeling, not a lack of people in my life. Can't quite put my finger on it. I'm simply antisocial at times, especially in the winter. But at the same time I live a very busy lifestyle: My kids are in a lot of activities, so I'm constantly driving, watching and volunteering. It's a busy time of year at work. I attend a lot of fitness classes when I'm not at work. I go to a lot of fundraising events such as dinner dances. So I'm wiped out at the end of the week and binge watching is a great way to unwind. So far I have binge watched: Battle Star Gallactica Firefly Orange is the New Black The Walking Dead seasons 1-3 24 But in all fairness those shows lead from one episode into another and it's like watching a really good movie that goes on forever. Best thing to do on a cold quiet winter Sunday if you ask me. Makes total sense. I also tend to binge watch movies. Years ago, I lived around the corner from a video store and on Friday night I would stock up on movies. I loved to watch sequels in succession over the course of the weekend. Like: Star Wars, Alien, Terminator, etc. Good stuff!

I can see that. I bet reading can be the same thing. But no one would say that because reading is viewed as a positive thing and not an escape from reality thing. |

2-6 episodes of a 30 minute show is the same length as a movie. 4-5 one hour episodes is the same as 2 movies. It's all relative is my point. I've sat back on a free night or day off & watched 2 movies, or 3-4 episodes of something I'm interested in. Calling that a sign of depression is complete crap. When I was growing up we had another name for it... F@%&ing "Movie Night", jerkbag. Cinemas actually use to bill "Double headers". Hell, a damn football game is over 3 hours, & some guys sit through 3 of them in one day Binge watching is watching an entire season of something in a weekend, & you know what? I've done that a couple times too, Breaking Bad & Fringe. I wouldn't recommend it, but I was trying to catch up. So screw you, internet psychiatry hacks We've all done SOMETHING to excess in our lives at one time or another. It's the nature of humanity to push a limit once in a while. You sat at a computer too long. You played video games too much. You overdid the booze. You were a raving whore for a while. You worked overtime or double shifts far more than was healthy, etc... Stop trying to make everyone feel like something is wrong with them so you can have a job & push meds |

Exactly. I figure a little binge watching is far better than becoming an alcoholic or drug addict. And I agree with Wissa about reading. My binge watching turned into binge reading when my kids were small. It was much easier to put down and pick up a book during those years then to sit through a half hour TV show. I read the first four Harry Potter books consecutively one summer. I also picked a couple of favorite authors like Jeffery Archer and Sidney Sheldon and read any book by them available at our local library. Yet no one would comment negatively about that. After all, it's reading, like Wissa said. |

We all need some 'me time' now and then. Right now I'm watching CSI:NY 4 episodes back-to-back, they're not consecutive or even from the same seasons, and I must have seen them at least twice each. But I don't care, they're well made with interesting storylines and well acted, so why not ?? Sitting on the sofa with a good book or series of books, or programmes or movies is not anti-social or isolationist. With all of the stuff we have to cram into a day, mostly for the benefit of other people, is a perfect excuse for some well-deserved 'me time' !! |

Binge watching is no different from a marathon or a film festival. Used to be, you could go to a cheapie theater and watch a day's worth of the Planet of the Apes movies, or a bunch of Bond films (in fact, a Planet of the Apes marathon is shown in The Big Bang Theory). Nobody saw that as lonely or addictive behavior. As for it being done in the privacy of one's own home, is it loneliness behavior if someone watches 3 hours of Gandhi? Is that not long enough? Does it turn long enough if I watch Gone With the Wind as a double feature and make it around 6 hours? Or it's all three of the LOTR films, for close to 9? 'Tis dumb. Yes, there are people who are sitting at home alone, and lonely, depressed and anxious. They are avoiding the outside world. Y'know somethin'? They existed before Netflix. |

Once Ixalla was ready, Tathrelle cornered her. “Before we leave for work, I just want to tell you, I’m sorry. I guess I sort of shut down last night. I know you were in pain and I wasn’t too terribly supportive.” There was a wall covering in the main part of their chamber, something that Tathrelle hadn’t noticed before. She stared at it for a second and then shook her head. Outside, a disembodied voice announced from a hidden speaker, “It is time to travel to all daytime places of employment. Transportation sleighs are available and ready. Citizens are encouraged to thank the sleigh drivers at the end of a successful transport. The government recommends haste, and requests that all pregnant persons be given preference for seating in their designated areas.” A little distracted, Ixalla just asked, “Pain?” Untrustworthy - by me, actually. It's for sale on Amazon - Yeah, I'm a published author jespah My author page on Facebook Author of Untrustworthy I blog about Startrek fanfiction..Honk if you love silence. | |

Oops, wrong thread.....!! No actually, dealing with the subject in hand, I remember as a teenager going to a local cinema (flea-pit) on a Saturday morning, to watch 3-4 hours of Batman episodes followed by an hour of karaoke-type singing, by anybody who wanted to get up on stage. It was like that in those days, and I wasn't the only one there, plenty of people of all ages cos it was cheap entertainment !! Remember this was before tv became popular, with it's seemingly endless menu of variety shows and channels. It was a simpler time, where we made the most of whatever 'fun' we could get, and a quick scan through the freeview channels these days, tv hasn't improved much over the decades !! |

I can see this in some people. Yes I binge watch... but I have a life and friends. I go out etc. However...I have some 20 something coworkers who straight up do not have a social life at all. After work and weekends is for catching up on missed TV shows and binge watching netflix. no dating, still living with parents, and no contact with people outside of work and shopping |
