The Captain's back...

omg do I feel old nowActually Im 2 days late. Voyager debuted and launched the UPN network on January 16th. 1995. I was 19 years old. By 18 I was working full time and exploring life. I was not the homebody I am now. I was always on the go. As a result I missed most of the last season of TNG and a lot of X files. I made sure to watch All Good Things and the near day long event before it (locally they screened what they considered the 5 best TNG episodes and then showed a special making of documentary of the final episode right before showing the episode itself). I was glad to see if leave on top and with such class. DS9 had just hit the snooze button for the third time (3rd season debut) and I had seen enough to know I wasn't missing anything there (I have since started watching the show and now appreciate it). For most of my friends it was the same. And we all carved out that evening to watch the premier of Voyager. We were looking foreword to another Trek show on a ship. Runabouts just didn't do it for us and the Defiant had only just barely showed up. We were also immersed in all of the hype. Back then it was mostly print and news spots. I remember TV Guide did an huge article on it. Lots of controversy. Kes was described as "Neelix's lover", one of the main characters was to be a hologram, the first officer had a visible tattoo, the captain was a chick, so was the chief engineer, the helmsman was a convict with a mysterious past, we got our first full blooded Vulcan as a main character, we got our first Asian since Sulu, a good portion of the ship would be comprised by outlaws, the ship had no neck, nacelles that moved and there was mess hall where a warthog in bad leisure suits cooked up crap each day. We also got our first Mexicans on trek. Two of them. However they didn't play Mexicans, they played a Native American and a half Klingon. We were also on captain #2, they couldn't decide if they wanted her hair up or down and they get stranded 75 years from home in the first episode. So we turned the tv to channel 31, adjusted the rabbit ears and at precisely 8pm the UPN logo flashed up with some horrible music. It started off fast paced and someone said "damn" if the first few minutes. Then came the credits. Visually awesome but I missed the TNG music. And then it happened. She spoke. WTF? We all looked at each other. Some of us thought the voice was too low, others too high pitched. Either way it sounded like a cartoon character who chain smoked and had whiskey for breakfast. This was to be the voice of the show for 7 years? The voice of our Captain's logs for 7 years? Inspirational speeches? Holy shit. Voice aside we liked the episode. It was jam packed with great visual effects (for the day, and especially for a TV budget), was heavy on action and even had some sarcasm (Mr. Kim, at ease before you sprain something). After that we gathered next week to watch the second episode. TNG had a great second episode. They all got drunk and horny. Very funny. Most though had second episodes that were not great. You still have yet to fully establish your characters and your shows theme. Voyager was no different. About that time we stopped watching, myself included. We returned to the pool halls, lazer tag arena's, music stores and whatever else we did after work. A few years later I had slowed down a bit and started staying home a few evenings a week and just unwinding. Then my grandma told me about an article in a magazine where "one of those Star Trek shows was going to have a Borg become part of the cast". I called my cousin and he confirmed. He then lent me a VHS copy of Scorpion part 1 he had recorded. From then I was hooked. And from then on I never missed an episode. I did tune in again to DS9 but again was not interested. Shortly after Voyager was available on VHS. I forgot how much, I think it was close to $24 and they mailed you a cassette regularly (I think it was monthly) that had 2 episodes on it or a two parter. By the end of the 4th season it eclipsed TNG as my favorite series and still does to this day. I no longer cringe at Mulgrew's voice, just her Russian accent. Im sure it will grow on me as I continue to watch her in Orange Is The New Black. I grew to love the characters and the episodes. It did have its dud's, all of the series did, but I still feel it had the most heart. I still watch the dvd's regularly by myself and with friends. They still make me smile, laugh, cheer and cry. |

Russian accent ?? Kate Mulgrew doesn't have a Russian accent, sure you're not getting her mixed up with Pavel Chekov ?? I took to Voyager from the first episode, it offered more crew interaction than the other series. Though I would have had more problems getting the Maquis officers to fit-in, and accept being a part of a Starfleet crew. B'Elanna did have trouble at times, not enough to cause a major breakdown of discipline, but I thought they could have worked that angle into the crew to add extra interest. Also, I would have made the final two-parter a three-parter, so they'd have more time to wrap-up the various storylines better, it just seemed a bit rushed !! Yes Seven of Nine was a welcome addition to the show, but I think they gave up on Kes too easily, there was way more development potential there I thought, but the writers' obviously thought otherwise. Shame really, she could have been a really outstanding member of the crew, especially with her psychic abilities, giving the writers food for thought !! Needless to say it's my favourite Trek series, and yes I do have all 7 seasons on dvd, so warping back to the Delta Quadrant is something I like to do !! |

Ooh er, my mistake, honestly didn't know that. I was taking it in the concept of Trek, rather than her other stuff. Thanks for the heads-up Joy !!
