inspired by this story: how the muppets created generation X in other words: what tv shows and/or movies were a part of your childhood and teenage (or even young adult) years? are there shows, movies, books, or people who influenced you in your younger days that stay with you as you've grown older? (note i didn't say you've grown up.) my younger years were heavily influenced by; magnum p.i., matlock, murder she wrote (probably why i like murder mysteries), macgyver, star trek: the original series. family ties, quantum leap, the real ghostbusters, star trek: TNG & a host of others. as for movies; back to the future, the goonies, various disney movies that where re-released, & james bond movies on tv. i read a bunch of books so i can't recall many. star trek novels & mysteries mostly. |

Unfortunately, I think Sledge Hammer had way too much of an influence on me. Also a little too much of SNL and SCTV! as for movies, well....................The Wrath of Khan of course! |

Star Trek:TOS Lost in Space Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea Speed Racer The Flintstones* Nuff said!* Godzilla, etc. Spider-Man(The first, 60's version animated series) Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer(A Christmas special, of course, but iconic, and part of every Christmas through my adulthood) *Voice actors Paul Soles, and Paul Kligman(Who worked on the previous awesome cartoon, voicing Peter Parker, and J. Jonah Jameson)lent their talents to the show, with Herbie, Rudolph's dad, and the Head Elf.* The Wild Wild West Adam-12. Co-star Kent McCord would go on, to play John Krichton's father in ''Farscape'' Lucy/Lucille Ball Show. Nuff said there, too! Gilligan's Island. Skip-peeeeeeerrrrr!!!!! Sanford and Son. ''YOU BIG DUMMY!!..... ''ELIZABETH-I'M COMIN' TA JOIN YA, HONEY!!'' '' I watched that one, both with Mom and Dad, and in syndie years later. Who can forget Lawanda Page's Aunt Esther? ''WATCH IT, SUCKA....'' So, these are a few to first spring to mind. What an era for tv, the 60's, and early seventies, be it watching shows in syndication, after I got home from school, or at night, or all those great Saturday afternoons. What a time to be a kid!! Wait....like AWOL said......I GREW UP????

I 'will' remember.

I remember watching tv but I am much older than most posters here I think because the shows you talk about were in my tween or very early teen years so it seems they had no influence on me. Or maybe I didn't really like them or something. I know I watched them but I don't remember caring about them in any way or looking forward to watching them. I watched "TV". They were on "TV". So I watched them. LOLBut I finally figured out a tv [something] that did 'color' my childhood in the 50s ('my' childhood); those M-F afternoon movies and the Friday Night Fright Theater (or something like that) movies. The M-F afternoon movies were always full of angst. WWII, the late 40s dramas, WWII, WWII. I was already full of angst because of the ongoing Russia/US nuclear bomb stand-off that filled our world (but wasn't explained to us kids) so these doom and gloom movies fed my childhood angst with the tangible rather than that background intangible fear (for a child) everyone and everything seemed to radiate. And the Friday Night Fright movies (Mummy, Frankenstein, Dracula, Warewolf, Screaming Skull, Creature From The Black Lagoon, etc) were the kids parties every Friday night. We got to stay up laaaaaate, and in good weather we ran freely around the neighborhood until they started at, maybe 10:30? 11:30? Sometimes we'd go to one house to watch them. Lots of times we'd have sleep overs with popcorn, chips & dips, potato chips, Coke. Sometimes we just went home and ended the night with the scary movie. I 'think' it gave real world fear a sense of humor with a side dish of movie scary not real nail biting. No angst allowed. But then, in my teen years, came Star Trek which immediately spoke to my intellect, modeled a thinking process I devoured like chocolate cake, gave me a visceral sense of hope, and had a 'profound and lasting influence' on my personal, community, & world view attitudes and actions. |

Well, I started to say this in my post, but, in terms of influence, the shows didn't do that to me, I just had certain things I liked in terms of sf genre, as well as conventional tv. All part and parcel of my life as a kid. No less significant, as they are all very fond memories. ST didn't inspire me to any particular end, I just liked the show. For anyone for whom it, or other shows/films did, great. BUT, though this was at the cusp of my teen years, STAR WARS had a HUGE IMPACT on me, in terms of simply what I loved as an sf fan. I was just relating to a friend, my love for the summer of '77, and remembering from an entertainment culture standpoint, its effect on me, how that is my favorite year, though that may sound trivial, in terms of an overall childhood. Of course, tell that to any kid who became a big SW fan after first seeing it! |
