Over the past decade, women have become a larger presence in geek culture. No matter the medium (film, TV, comics, etc.), they've proven that it's no longer just a boys' club. This Saturday (March 8) is International Women's Day -- a celebration of the economic, political and social contributions made by women worldwide. In honor of that, we're saluting 11 ladies who have made a mark in the sci-fi and fantasy genres.

These women have created their own paths and set a precedent for what's to come. Some started from the bottom and are now executives and bosses in their own right. Others took a more direct approach, creating opportunities where there were none. Regardless of the method, their work ethic and achievements deserve to be praised, and their power recognized.

Hmm good list, Gale Ann Hurd at number 1 is entirely expected, especially for her work with former hubby James Cameron. But for women who are IN sci-fi, the work done by Sigourney Weaver in the Alien series of movies, has to be mentioned. In fact, when it comes to standout performances, am sure we could all make a list there, but am still putting Sigourney Weaver at number 1 !!

I don't know who all is on the list, and I looked at the article, but, for ME, put Kate Mulgrew on there, who, after Jennifer Lien, is my favorite st actress, period. Kate came into st knowing nothing but a name, and made Kathryn Janeway come to life with all her courage, determination, great 'mothering' of her crew, and those closest to her, and a sense of humor, to boot. She broke the mold of only male captains, and showed that she could lead like any man, and be every bit the woman, as well. I know I have no problems finding others who would agree.

I didn't recognize all the names, but, for one, Kathleen Kennedy certainly hit my memory key. If she is in the group behind the relaunch of Star Wars, then, I think that's indeed a good potential sign, given her years of success with legend Steven Spielberg; and, along with Gale Anne Hurd, whom I certainly remember for her producing chops, definitely belong on the list.

I'm sure Anne Rice would be in there, though I'm not into the vampire genre(I know one pal who is! :D )'she would most definitlely deserve a spot,. and right at the top, as far as any name coming to mind.

In comics, I remember back in the day, it seemed to be all men in the credits, and, now, it looks like any glass ceilings are shattered. Now, in the whole sf/fantasy culture arena, we won't have just 'fanboys', but 'fangirls'. (I never have cared for that term, myself) The more united against the 'outsiders' in the 'real world', the better, but, any member of any trek site knows, there are as many female fans, as male, and the person who has come to be my bf in both fandom, and pretty much in regular life is of the opposite sex.Not that it's more or less important, either way, but, she's my first real female bf, and you know who you are! :D

Heck, what about Jeri Taylor? She ought to be on a list, as a co-creator in ST, and co-producer.AND she can write a good Voyager novel, too!!

Oh, and yes, Spocklet, certainly Sigourney Weaver. ALIEN is one of my all-time fav movies, along with the first sequel. Definitely an sf icon.

Thank you. Would agree with your list too, very much so, Kate Mulgrew especially. The strength she brought to her character is at least as good as most men, Chakotay - Robert Beltran - for example !!

But let's not forget Jeri Ryan, her performance as Seven of Nine was pretty exceptional too. She made the variety of emotions required in her performance seem totally natural. An actress can only work to the strength of the writing presented to her, and think have already mentioned that imho Jennifer Lien wasn't given scripts that 'pushed' her, but sure her performance was definitely memorable !!

In similar fashion, the two actresses who played the Borg Queen - Alice Krige and Susanna Thompson - were equally delicious !!

:D Thanks for the nice ref re Kes, Spocklet. There is no question, Jeri/Seven made a mark on sf tv.

If we are to make this a list that is encompassing, and not necessarily to thos eimportant cearive minds a la femme that have had a major impact, again, to actresses, no question, that Carrie Fisher is an icon. She played a princess in peril-but, she was no quivering beauty-she grabbed a blaster, as soon as she was out of her Death Star cell, and showed she had spunk! and was one of the Rebellion's key leaders, standing up to Vader, the Empire, and fighting to victory alongside brother Luke and eventaul lover Han Solo. Carrie is indeed 'royalty' in iconic sf.

And, let's not forget Gillian Anderson, who breathed life into the now-iconic sf tv role of Special Agent Dana Scully, alongside David Duchovny's Fox Mulder in ''The X-Files.'' They lead Chris Carter's series of very personal UFO abduction, quest, paranormal events, and conspiracies in a long run on Fox, bringing respectability to the genre that had been to that point a rarety in terms of it, and professional recognition for one or both actors, not since to me a show like ''The Twilight Zone.'' (Star Trek, well :D we all know it's in its on class!!) Gillian played a woman of considerable intellect, and became the one person Mulder trusted to ''keep him honest'' in his Quixote-like pursuit of the Truth. They had a wonderful, and powerful bond. Definitley, she ought be in some A-list of female impactees on the genre.

Agreed, both Carrie Fisher and Gillian Anderson are both exceptional actresses in the area of sci-fi, and apologies for not mentioning that fact before now !!

But really, we could make a list of every actress in sci-fi, they've all got something going for them. Roxann Dawson (B'Elanna Torres) and Nana Visitor (Kira Nerys) for example !!

But I would also add a couple of ladies from Babylon 5 too, specifically Mira Furlan (Delenn) Claudia Christian (Susan Ivanova) and Patricia Tallman (Lyta Alexander), who really helped to make that series great !!
