The transporter beam deposited the figure safely and swiftly to terra firma from the vessel which awaited his return in Earth orbit. He had come quite far, to this place. In this moment of his already lengthy existence, to honor the one, whose remains were interred at this very spot-a spot chosen by the one gone now one solar terran year. Gone, but never to be forgotten. And, among all those who name themselves sentient, none could remember more deeply, than the race to whom the passed one's visitor belonged. This could be a means of contentment, of satisfaction, to pull from one's mind a thousand facts, a thousand formulae, for a onetime science officer, on a vessel, whose name in this deacde was synonymous with evryt6hing that mankind and its allies hoped to be. It could also be a source of great pain...for onbe, like he, who has seen, indeed, so much. And witnesses Entropy take its far greater measure of flesh from those who, to his belief, derserved so much more... In robes best suited for the arid landscape that once had encompassed the city known as Mojave, the visitor knelt, with knees far from having the oil of youth, and placed a hand upon the green grass long grown over the sod, underneath which Christopher Pike, admiral, Starfleet, and former captain of that same legendary ship, if but for a too-fleeting time, resided forever in body, though, many beiefs would declare boldly, not in spirit. A spirit afire with a desire for exploration, of 'turning over every single rock I can find, on every single planet'. This, from a quote the visitor recalled, that day, when another Enterprise set out on its historic five-year mission....as, here, in this place which the visitor now called his reality, a ship blazed atrail of discovery into the Final Frontier... '' May you have found, Christopher Pike,'' whispered this Vulcan who once stood by a man of this same name, on that ship, seperated by the starnds of phyicalities best understood by this one, '' peace, in the life to come....as you sought, to engender peace, in this worl which you have departed...'' ''Amen,'' another voice spoke, quietly, solemnly. The Vulcan looked up, to meet, standing nearby, the eyes of a man, whose path was etched into stone alongside his own in the corridors of Memory. A man still young, as the Vulcan so well remembered him. But matured. Forged, by the fires of trial, of pain. Even so, stronger. And ready for every challenge, which the man who had been his mentor, and so much more, had believed him capable of surpassing. Of fulfilling the Mission: To Go Boldly, Where Noone Had Gone Before. ''Jim.'' The word emerged from the elder Vulcan's lips, more to befit the term t'hyla. Brother. Eternally. '' Spock..if i'm disturbing you....'' ''Please, stay. It has been far too long, since last we spoke. However,'' the future version of the man who had in that time when Pike had lost his life in the attack by Khan Noonien Singh, genetically-engineered human, and full of vengence, upon the heart of Starfleet.'', I must confess, that it would be selfish of me, to risk any..contamination....'' Kirk grinned the boyish smile that Spock had seen both charm a hundred female sentients across the depths of space, and disarm, with a jest, or a combination of his unswervable will, two bitter foes, and make it seem as though it were merely good luck thast did the trick. Spock knew-this one made his own luck, and the universe save any who tried to stop him. ''Spock. You, 'contaminate?' How can you even say that?'' Kirk shrugged, still in his dress greys. ''ME?....My friend,'' he continued, closing the not very distant space between them, and laying a hand upon his shoulders, which had borne far too much in his years, '' I KNOW.....MORE than you THINK I do....'' ElderSpock blinked. Being caught unawares was not his usual circumstance, even today. But, feeling a powerful need to understand, to unravel just one more puzzle life would present to him, he tilted his long-greyed head, and asked, '' Please.....elaborate.'' ''The cave,'' young Kirk responded, his blue eyes alit with the memory of that incident. That meeting, that, certainly, HE would not have imagined, in any reality. But, by now, Kirk understood, that existence was far more complex, than even he'd first learned at the Academy. '' The Meld,'' Spock nodded. ''Forgive me. I was.....particularly vulnerable, at that moment......'' The sadness of a loss, that, fortunately, only a rare few-such as the entire surviving members of the Vulcan species-arose in his old and young friend's eyes. '' I felt it. I felt it all. I remembered it, when I was on Nero's ship. When we defeated him, barely. With your help.'' '' YOU are the one responsible for stopping the end of the Federation. Even if, my friend, you couldn't save Vulcan...'' ''Or Romulus....'' ''..... How many people owe you their lives. How many generations, that haven't been born yet....in the year you came from....THAT is YOUR legacy, Spock. EMBRACE IT.'' Something that another of Spock's race might note, and upbraid him for sparkled in Spock's wise eyes at that instant...as, on the same lips that breathed a soft prayer, came a very clear note of amusement, as he raised that yes, by now old, familiar eyebrow.... ''.....Does that constitute an order, Captain?'' ''Strong advice. Something, '' Kirk said, looking to the patch of green grass, the same sort of grass he'd ridden over with Chris Pike, one long, and wild shore leave, '' that another good man once did for me....'' Spock nodded, closing his eyes, to repress, yes...the tears. Born of loss. Of so many adventures, before he'd known this remarkable human James Kirk. But, there was hope. Always hope. ''Just around the corner,'' Jim smiled, his eyes wet, but, remebering with the love of a son for a father.'' Around the next star, the first one to the right....'' ''.....And straight on, till morning.....'' Kirk took his gaze, and held it like a singularity's grasp. ''Spock.....I never told anyone. Not even...you....about what I saw. About...what you did....to save the ship.'' ''YOU inspired me, to do what needed to be done.'' I knew what your other self would try-and I wasn't going to allow that to happen. Not again. It was...my turn....'' '' They are what matter to me. Without them....I'm nothing. No captain is. We do it- we die....for family.'' ''Yes, Jim. We do.'' ''There IS one inescapable conclusion, Jim...'' ''Yeah?'' '' It would appear, that perhaps we are...fated....for our paths to cross, from time to time....'' ''As we were meant to meet, in that cave, at that moment? DESTINY, Spock??'' The other man looked back to the placid resting place of the human who, ultiamtely bound them both together. And allowed himself to smile again. Cutting a mischievous glance aside, he replied, '' Doctor McCoy would say, were EITHER of them here, that noone ELSE would be able to tolerate us, except ourselves......'' '' Did your Bones hate transporters, as much as mine does?'' '' Jim.....we do not, I think, have time today, to recount ALL of his phobias....'' ''Let me buy you a cup of tea, '' Kirk invited. '' and, he added, gently, imagining Chris Pike smiling down, and thinking about ironies..and destinies....'' And we can swap a few stories....of yours...that I REMEMBER.....'' |

Thanks, AWO. And, I respect your feelings about the new turn of franchise, as it were. I have had good friends online, who didn't share my affection, but, we put it in its little box, and that was that. |
