Permanently stationed on Ocampa

Kathryn Janeway already knew why Ensign Samantha Wildman had come to visit her in her Ready Room. But, she portrayed her reaction to the news that the young woman gave her, with suitable surprise, for, of late, she'd had plenty of practice. Far too much, about far too great a matter....

'' I just wanted to inform you of my...condition...''

Voyager would, in time, have its very first child on board, in an environment which Janeway and her first officer, Chakotay had discussed that very day, during which the crew dealt with a remarkable new species of space-dwelling life forms, whose proximity had had an equally astounding effect upon their crewmate, and friend Kes, whose Ocampan life-cycle had been disrupted by the biogenic emanations of the creatures, to the point of going into the Elogium, the stage of being prepared for conception.

Kes's body, and emotions had been in terrible flux, faced with the prospect of bearing a child at what was for a her race too early an age. But, as Ocampan females conceiove but once, this would be-or so Kes presumed then-her only chance to bring a son, or daughter into the world, with Neelix, who she loved, and who, after great deliberation of his own, had then with joy, decided to join with the woman he cared so deeply for.

Yet, even as Janeway had come to Kes, who locked herself in the Doctor's office in the early throes of a false Elogium, and, with a mother's love, comforted, and reassured this one she'd come to care so much about, memories arose, of an incident, which had cast what the captain, and protector of her farflung crew regarded as a pall over the future of this gentle, and remarkable girl.......

....One in which, out of the ether, out of the blue, a Kes unlike any she could ever imagine arrived on Voyager, to plot with those who would take the lives of all aboard for their own dark schemes, and with a rage, that could have in no manner fit the innocent being, who looked at all life as sacred. A Kes from the future.

Now, Samantha Wildman, despite her anxious nature of being seperated from her husband, so very distant, could look forward to a life with a daughter of her own, with, even on this ship stranded in unknown space, hope.

Could Kes say the same?

''Congratulations, Ensign,'' she told her, and sat back, with a heart torn between extremes, as Wildman went on her way, her eyes drifting to the stars beyond her office viewports, as though there might be answers there.

Sadness begat regret. Regret begat frustration. And frustration, anger-at the universe, at Fate, at whatever forces had conspired, to rob, at least oneday, her beloved friend of a bright future.

Kathryn Janeway was an individual who was indeed not one to simply capitulate; to settle for matters as they were, to surrender. Not against all that which had come their way thus far. Not without fighting, with evrything she, and they all had, with her last breath. Not, when it came to that which mattered most...and with those, who mattered most.....

Amongst all the recent memories that weighed upon her-of 'that day'-came another, when, not so long ago, she first invited Neelix, and Kes aboard, the young Ocampan so eagerly antipating a great adventure. An amazing future.

And Kes deserved this, for all she was, and all she meant, to each of those who were by now her Family. Kathryn Janeway would die, for Family. And, today...it was time to fight again.

''Janeway to Tuvok,'' she spoke via the intership[ comm.

His placid, even tones responded. '' Yes, Captain.'' HE KNEW all of this, the tragic thing-to-be. Her secret-keeper. Now, her ally.

''Can I see you, please.?''

Momentarily, the Ready Room doors parted, and he stood before her. Of course, when it came to Kathryn Janeway, little got past him.

''Captain? Is there a problem?''

''Yes, Tuvok,'' she responded, still burdened. But not ready to bow. Her jaw set, she rose, envisioning two Keses. And both so very needing her help.

'' There IS something wrong. I failed Kes, Tuvok,'' she said, her voice become a harsh, painful whisper. She need not have explained further.

'' And I intend to repair, what's been broken. So help me God.''
'' My door is always open to you, Kes.''

-Kathryn Janeway, ''Tuvix''
