Right. My introduction to actual binge watching was with the nuBSG just before its final season was aired. I had not heard of it, knew nothing about it. I was at the library, DVD section, saw the cover, thought "It looks at least interesting", and checked out the first season. I picked up the second and third season two days later. My binging on BSG seriously looks similar to the video I include in this post:

(click on this big picture and it will start the video. I've edited it to under three minutes long)

I couldn't stop talking about this show but my closest friends weren't watching it. (most of us didn't do cable, and the cable friends didn't have the SyFy Channel.)

And I didn't work at a place that had a water cooler!!!!!!! But eventually I found a small group who, like me, were gaa gaa for the show. (my friend had a friend who knew others talking about it that would meet at a deli each Saturday. I finagled an introduction)

Within a month of returning the three DVD seasons to the library I all of a sudden had to watch everything again. Back to the library where all three seasons ... were just sitting on the shelf. "Come home with me my little ones." LOL All three seasons.

Another binge. But this time I actually did some sleeping (LOL), ate when it was appropriate (easy food that didn't take me away from the TV too long), once in a while answered my phone, and even periodically went places (if I had to). But when I was home and awake I was again watching the entire series to date. And finished all three seasons in just over a week.

But that was the last time the library provided me with this kind of opportunity. LOL BSG became the most 'reserved/requested' TV series they owned. The reserve list was in the mid two digits and the demand for this series was directly responsible for them changing the check-out period from 30 days to two weeks! (binge an entire four season series in 14 days? piece of cake!)

There were others out there binging BSG! :joy:

Wissaboo has brought back to mind my propensity to binge entire seasons in a ridiculously small amount of time. Fondly I can add.

Wissa:
"I've finished 66 hours [of The Guardian ] this last month."

Over the last years I've binged (allowed a TV show to take over my life for a brief while... just like a good book does) quite a few shows.

That is sort of how I learned to respect and luv ST: Enterprise in a way I hadn't when it aired. I checked out a season at a time and watched it back to back. et voila... I finally connected with it!!!

See what binge watching can do.

And I just watched the above newscast video ^^^ again and heard something I missed the first go round:

Netflix is dumping the entire season of House of Cards February 14th.!! Talk about your taking back Valentine's Day from the card and gift companies!

"Sweetheart, for Valentine's Day let's binge something together. We can have party foods or whatever prepared ahead of time. We can get all snuggly in our PJs. Get some wine. And start a new Valentine tradition for ourselves; TV show binging! What do you say! Just you, me, wine, good food, snuggling together allllllllllllllllll day!

And let's begin our new tradition with Netflix' Valentine Day release of the absolutely new entire second season of House of Cards!"

Netflix, I like your style. Valentine's Day. Brilliant. I am so there! (along with thousands of others, if not more even)

Now right or wrong, accurate or inaccurate, my own 'personal' definition of binge watching is:
#1 When I can't put it down.... again like a book I can't stop reading without a cattle prod. Which takes over all my free time, and often things like sleeping. :dizzy: I want more and I want it now!
#2 For some reason I'm experiencing depression and I must escaaaaaaape from the weight of whatever is getting me down.
#3 I want to learn about the show everybody else is talking about.

I've binged (among others):
Orange Is The New Black (#1)
The Riches (#1)
Arrested Development (#1)
Season 1 & 2 Hotel Babylon (#1)
Lord of the Rings extras on the DVDs (#1) Spocklet talking about the appendices on LOTR discs
Spaced (#1)
Law & Order/UK (#1)

Bones first three seasons (#2)
NCIS first five seasons (#2)

Dr. Who 10th & 11th Doctor (#3)
ST: Enterprise (#3)
ST: Deep Space Nine (#3)

There are more examples of course but for this post they become unnecessary.

Marathoning, again for me 'personally', is a whole different animal.

When I marathon something, best example being a StarTrek series (now that I've binged Enterprise & DS9) is when I'm having a desire to watch a lot of something.... usually something I like.

Sometimes, for me at least, marathoning and binging lines 'can' blur. But not usually because marathon watching doesn't make demands on my life like binging can do. More like it is the show I really want to watch a lot of.

I marathon SHERLOCK on a regular basis. I marathon ST: Voyager on a regular basis.

 It make sense in my mind even if I'm not explaining it well in this post.

Grimm!! I just checked Netflix. Not there. So I just now went online and reserved the library's first season! (three copies and four people ahead of me. LOL)

Absolutely adore Monroe(!!!) & Rosalee and Nick & Juliette. Since I already watch the show most weeks I assume I will be marathoning rather than binging. But I've never seen them w/out commercials soooooo...... it 'could' turn into a binge. :D

Amazon prime has Falling Skies and may go nuts on that again. You know I love that show

Is there a difference between a binge and a marathon ?? If you like or love a show (as I do), then I don't see anything wrong with watching seemingly endless amounts of it !!

Anecdote:
I started reading a story three years back that was so engrossing I unexpectedly withdrew from all life as I knew it for nearly a week to get to the end... it was a loooong story. Got maybe 3, 4 hours of sleep a night... "One more chapter!!!" Barely ate anything nutritious because I wanted to eat in a way that didn't disrupt my reading, ergo junk & sodas! :dizzy:

I wouldn't have read it any other way!! The emersion was awesome! Binge reading at it finest. :dewleaf:

Anyway, I thought the analogy to my series binging a hoot. And I seriously luv binging a TV series as much as I luv binging a 'can't put down' book!

owwww... another anecdote:
Before the advent of VHS players and after the advent of multiple screen theaters my friend and I would sometimes map out a weekend day of four to five movies playing around town in these new multiple screen theaters. (time, movie, theater) And we would spend the day going (sometimes rushing :liz: ) to the different theaters and/or screens to do marathon movie going!!

I definitely have a personality with a marked propensity to binge or marathon this stuff... happily too!

I will remember.

Me and my husband first watched the first couple seasons of 24 this way. In those days you went to blockbuster and rented the disk for 2 days and there would be 6 episodes or so on the disk so you had to watch it fast.

Just recently we watched 2 seasons of dexter in a couple of days.

I think the difference between a binge and a marathon is the planning. As in you sit down thinking I'm gonna watch 4 episodes of this show as opposed to, just one more, ok now just one more. Till it's 3 in the morning.

as foar as i can tell;

marathon is watching 4-6 episodes in a row.

bingeing is watching 4 or 5 seasons withing a month or less.

they also call that mainlining, but since that's kind of fallen out of fashion.

a related story;

when we found out you could rent VHS players (once upon a time you could) we went a bit crazy would rent 10-12 movies that we had not seen along with it. we had to watch them over the 2-day rental period (always a weekend) & since you had to rewind then, that added to the time. stuff like ending credits becomes meaningless.
