So the ranking thread got me thinking about trying to finish watching what Trek I've not seen... again. I try every once in a while, & end up losing steam. Since I know the general overview of the story arc, maybe this time I should can the notion of watching them in order, like I did with DS9, as it never works out. I might fare better if I start with the better episodes, & get through them that way So your mission. List for me what episodes you as a Voyager fan are astounded someone hasn't seen, yet still calls themselves a Trek fan. Maybe list them in what order you think I should watch these must see episodes, if you can. |

You caught my attention with the Voyager reference because this series is the one that has spoken most deeply to me since Star Trek The One And Only did in the 60s. But I do know people are drawn/connected to different series and StarTrek overall for way different reasons. Some folks get their enjoyment from the space stuff, some like a series because of its darker real life grittiness. Others just plain old entertainment, or the science, or that's the one that caught them in their formative years. Me, I'm mostly about the real time ethics I can use in life. The modeling of values stories. Plus I'm very forgiving of the flaws and warts in an episode and care not for minutiae to any degree so you might take that information into account when I make recommendation. But I'm ga ga for technobabble. So whatever episodes I post will indeed be colored by my particular personality and I never ever judge episodes as being good/bad wrong/right. It's always what I took away from it. How it affected me. Right. That's my disclaimer. And having said that I'll go get my Voyager Companion, which is my most cherished ST possession. I make notes in it when I watch the series. ............ Parallax because it demonstrates the jockeying for position recognition in new groups with disparate backgrounds and personalities, & it is tricky. Often people appear to others one way. which can be a cover up for personal challenges. Watching Chakotay and Janeway thread their way through these things to strengthen the necessary whole for better survival in this environment. Phage because that's the episode the Doctor, through interactions with Kes, first begins to conceive himself possibly more that just a software program. The Cloud because of the poignancy of the growing understanding that because of their unique circumstances, being lost in the Delta quadrant & cut off from everything familiar but each other, Janeway is examining her role as captain has to become much more than her training. Janeway: "Personal log, Stardate 48546.2. Our journey home is several weeks old now, and I have begun to notice in my crew and in myself, a subtle change as the reality of our situation settles in. Here in the Delta Quadrant, we are virtually the entire family of man. We are more than a crew and I must find a way to be more than a captain to these people, but it's not clear to me exactly how to begin. At the Academy, we are taught that a captain is expected to maintain a certain distance. Until now, I've always been comfortable with that distance. Maybe this is just the way it works. Maybe the distance is necessary. Maybe more than ever now, they need me to be larger than life. " And because of the exposition through Kes & Nelix dialogue and the grumpy Doctor I begin to notice how similar the Voyager journey is to the TOS Enterprise journey. Plus it has a bunch of lines I love to hear again and again. Nelix: "Now look what she's gotten us into!" Kes: "These people are natural born explorers." Nelix: "These people are natural born idiots if you ask me." Doctor: "Nebula? What are we doing in a nebula? No. Wait. Don't tell me. We were..... investigating." The Doctor has more lines that I enjoy hearing again and again. And this episode is where we begin learning about Janeway and her coffee, and that Trek wide favorite quote: "There's coffee in that nebula." Eye of the Needle for so so many reasons. The hope, the working together, Kes' influence on the Doctor's growth in recognizing and cultivating his place in the universe and in the crew, disappointment & heart break and having to move forward anyway. This episode is one of my most loved in all the hundreds and hundreds of episodes of episodes given to us in StarTrek. |

i don't know about "must watch" but; (in no particular order) 30 days is a good one. (season 5) paris is demoted & sent to the brig & during the course of the episode we find out why. faces (season 1) is an interesting one about b'elanna confronting her klingon half. basics pt 1 & 2 (end of season 2 & the start of 3) are good ones, IMHO. |

The first episode of the series: Caretaker because of Janeway and how she faces and continues to 'think' and continues to 'act' in the unimaginable worst case scenario. This modeling is always important to me. The Janeway character is my personal most important, most admired, and most respected character in all of StarTrek. (my most cherished are the big three from Star Trek The One And Only; ShatnerKirk, NimoySpock, & KelleyBones) And Tom because of having excellent abilities and aptitude that his personal challenges and decisions had so far been only disappointment to himself. He's given a second chance at the beginning, though really doesn't recognize it as such. Then after the abduction of Voyager I can see he recognizes he is now in position to for most purposes to begin again. And how he faces bad habits that need to be replaced, consequences of his past life with the crew that need to be overcome, and his own personal view of himself that has worked poorly for him that has to be redeemed. Because of the friendship that begins in this episode between the young enthusiastic naďve Harry & the cynical failed in life and spirit Tom. These two characters and this relationship is a favorite of mine from the moment they meet to the end of the series, and all points in-between. Because of the exceptional dialogue given to the Doctor in this first season. And for this one moment at the end of the show that is so deliciously emotional for me; full of honesty about the life in front of them, and the resolve move forward while continuing to act admirably: Janeway: "Tom, set a course.. for home." |

Once Ixalla was ready, Tathrelle cornered her. “Before we leave for work, I just want to tell you, I’m sorry. I guess I sort of shut down last night. I know you were in pain and I wasn’t too terribly supportive.” There was a wall covering in the main part of their chamber, something that Tathrelle hadn’t noticed before. She stared at it for a second and then shook her head. Outside, a disembodied voice announced from a hidden speaker, “It is time to travel to all daytime places of employment. Transportation sleighs are available and ready. Citizens are encouraged to thank the sleigh drivers at the end of a successful transport. The government recommends haste, and requests that all pregnant persons be given preference for seating in their designated areas.” A little distracted, Ixalla just asked, “Pain?” Untrustworthy - by me, actually. Im doing that with DS9 right now. Next will be ENT. I have seen probably about 60% of ENT. I had only seen less than 25% of DS9.
I would still start with the pilot, Caretaker. While the premise and ending will come as no surprise, seeing where they all came from and the marriage of the two crews via the moral dilemma posed to them at the end defines so much of what embodies the series. This series had the most specific defined premise of any of the shows: stranded 75 years from home. Its worth it to watch the dominos line up and then get pushed into motion.
Resistance season 2 Ever hear other fans mention that Voyager was "the show with heart", that the series "had a lot of tear jerkers"? Here is a prime example of why. Also, it gives a good insight into the kind of person Janeway is. There was also a secondary theme that was prevalent throughout the early days of the series regarding conservation and limited resources. This was watered down as the series progressed and replaced with the occasional bartering of supplies. Not a heavy action or visual effects episode but a truly deep exploration of the human psyche. Death Wish season 2 This episode did what made TNG famous, it took a social issue and explored it through a science fiction medium. This was one of Michal Piller's favorites, one he collaborated on before leaving the series. A episode about suicide written by his son, Shawn Piller. Add to the mix, it has not 1 but 2 Q's in it. Deadlock season 2 A fast paced and action heavy episode. Again, this one is on the dark side. Bad shit happens and people die. Its not a techno babble heavy episode, but has an interesting sci fi theory presented in it. Everything culminates into a rather grim and unexpected ending. Scorpion season 3 & 4 The mother of all 2 parters. Take the hopelessness of seeing Picard as a Borg in Best Of Both Worlds, the fear of what's to come after seeing the Odyessy purposely rammed and destroyed in The Jem'Hadar and scope of the Earth being assaulted in The Xindi then multiply it by 10 and you have Scorpion. When you see "to be continued" at the end of part 1 things are so truly fucked up you will scratch your head and wonder how they wrap it up in part 2. This also marks the debut of the lovely Jeri Ryan as 7 of 9. The Gift season 4 When they brought Worf to DS9 he was an added character. When 7 of 9 came to Voyager they had her displace another regular character. That unfortunately was Kes. They said the character wasn't working. Guess they never heard of Jake Sisko. Anyway, this was her send off. Jennifer Lien was being thrown out the door but still put on a class act performance with all that shit going on around her. Kes cried, Janeway cried, I cried. The Year Of Hell season 4 Don't let the lack of creativity of the episodes title deter you. Its derived from events in a past episode, Before and After. That episode was centered around Kes, who ironically had been written off the show by this point. Big action. Big visual effects. Big scale episode. Big emotion also. Its a fun ride with an ending that proves once again Janeway has the biggest set of balls of any Captain. Timeless season 5 This episode was just pure fun and adrenaline. The visual effects and production values in this one are top notch. And when you consider it was episodic television on a shit network it is truly nothing short of amazing. Voyager won the Emmy for visual effects this year, beating out DS9. Quite a feat considering this was DS9's last season and had all of those massive fleet battles. Also another episode personifying how the Voyager crew was more than shipmates, they were a family. Counterpoint season 5 Everyone who hates Janeway really hates this episode. Everything they dislike, the self righteousness, disregarding of protocol, sarcastic one liners, being smarter than the men is portrayed two fold in this episode. So I like it twice as much as the average episode. Its also got a romantic theme to it so it would make a good date night episode (the best date night is episode is Resolutions from season 2, its guaranteed to rev up a girl just like she had just finished a Nora Roberts marathon on The Lifetime Network). Another unique trait of this episode was its use of Tchaikovsky's and Mahler's music. Interesting to see space ships flying to classical music. This was another dive into the mind of Janeway and how she commands her ship. Its also fun, cause you get to see her interact with a villain in a way only a woman captain could. Ill also give it props for the episodes title, something that was not Voyagers strong suite, and how it relates to the episode. Dark Frontier season 5 The origins of 7 of 9. Interesting character back story is fleshed out here. We also get our first Voyager episode with the Borg queen and so begins an interesting, almost lesbianic who can out mind fuck all the rest relationship between her 7 and Janeway that is carried through the rest of the series. 11:59 season 5 Not the most exciting episode. It takes place new years eve of y2k. Its interesting to look back now and see what everyone thought was going to happen when the 21st century arrived. This was one of the more positive predictions of that event. Equinox season 5 & 6 This one has 2 Starfleet captains, see how differently they can react to the situation. This episode arc takes Janeway to the edge. Then pushes her over. Voyager was good in that is allowed its lead to explore her flaws, something the other series did not do so well and that TOS never did. In this episode it was obsession and vengeance. Not the first choice of traits when you have phaser arrays and photon torpedoes at your disposal. Yeah, she goes total bitch in this episode and the results are quite destructive. Dynamite comes in small packages, especially 5'5 Irish women who are having a bad day. Again, good action and great visual effects in this one. Tinker Tenor Doctor Spy season 6 Even people who don't care much for Voyager tend to like the Doctor. This is an awesome and truly fun Doctor episode. Picardo does all of his own singing in this episode. Don't let singing scare you off, this is not Cop Rock. Also a very funny episode. Good Shepherd season 6 What do you do when you have retards on your ship? You send them packing or back to the academy. Unless your stranded in the Delta Quadrant. Janeway takes Voyagers less brightest and least useful on an away mission. No im not talking about Nexlix. Anyway, anything that can go wrong does. Good team building and mentoring episode that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside. Critical Care season 7 If you think health care is fucked up now, just wait until you see how bad it can get in the future. A few years ago this episode would not have made this list, but given all the current attention on this topic its worth watching. Lineage season 7 Not much I can say that doesn't bleed spoilers. Very heart wrenching episode. Roxanne Dawson really gets to show her acting chops in this one. A pivotal moment for the character as well. Prophecy season 7 Voyager comes across a Klingon vessel in the Delta quadrant. Unaware of the Khitomer accords they attack. Janeway kicks their ass and they all hug it out. Another good Be'Lanna episode, getting her in touch with her roots. Also, someone gets laid in this episode and its not who you would expect. Homestead season 7 Everyone got their chance to shine on Voyager. With only 3 episodes left they decided it was Neelix's turn. This episode makes me regret any and all uncomplimentary remarks I have ever made about the character. The ending was filled with such emotion, superb acting and touching music. I cried like a bitch. Renaissance man season 7 Another truly fun episode. Everything that made Voyager quirky, unique and fun was present here. Humor, action, heart, music and the family like interaction were all on display at their best. Also some of the most impressive visual effects, to that date, were presented here. You even get to see one of the regulars do some Matrix style shit. Endgame season 7 And here you get to see it all end. The first time I watched it I didn't like it too much. In retrospect I can see now that was me just being a lazy viewer. I wanted everything handed to me, explained and all the pieces of the puzzle put together. Now I watch it and see all of the brilliance. What did not escape me the first time was again, the heart. This one made me cry too. *slight spoiler alert* Some complain it was a rip off of All Good Things. I disagree. There was time travel involved but they were dissimilar. TNG signed off with Picard moving across 3 specific points in time. Endgame had 2 different Janeways from 2 different times interacting. Not the same, not a rip off. And it was cut brilliantly, with the first part having an almost Terantino feel to the back and forth with the different time periods. The final confrontation between Janeway and the Borg queen was very satisfying and the ending as a whole was too if even it was a bit predictable. |

Hey, I forgot about this thread. LOL I enjoyed your episodes write-up, CaptainJaneway. And when I read this: I was taken aback because I see all of the brilliance too! Our only difference being I was fortunate that I saw it the first time around. I was exceedingly surprised others never saw it. I don't know why but I am quite literally grateful to you for saying this. Possibly because I've felt alone for all these years in the joy that Endgame gave me then and gives me in every single re-watch.It has always been quite difficult for me to read posters ripping this episode apart with so much negativity when it brought me such a wonderful and beautifully emotional wrap up for my beloved Voyager series. |

This was the one I went for today. It wasn't bad. Kind of had hints of TNG's Disaster, Parallels & Time Squared. It didn't bowl me over though. Kind of a pedestrian execution. I think it might have been a combination of the pacing & the acting that made it seem rather cut & dry. It did remind though that I like Kes. |

I'm no drama critic, and tastes vary, so, in my case, ''Deadlock'' is one I would put on a list, anyway. It even has a basis for the Voyager novel '' Echoes'', which sees an way team tarvelling through various parallel realities centered around a single DQ planet. It's sad, knowing 'the other crew' is all going to be killed, except Kim, and there isa through-line for Harry, who in the novel admits to Paris remaining discomgiture about where he is, and where he came from. As Avoyager fan, I never thought much about that after the ep. I think ''Tuvix'' is a recommendable ep; yes, it has another transporter gone awry, and it represents a great personal strain and conflict for in particular Janeway and Kes, who are affected most by this event occuring. There is a key moral component, and decision Kathryn faces herein, influenced by a grieving Kes, including a scene which contains my sig line for my AA posts, that highlights their by-now deep bond as 'mother', and 'daughter'. ''Cold Fire'' is I would say one of the best Kes-centric episodes, but it also gives us a glimpse of both a heretofore unknown bit of history, both for the young Ocampan, and her Voyager family, who meet a being who, Janeway hopes, might be the key to their return home. We see the Caretaker's mate, and the true lost potential of not only Kes' race, but of herself-and a harbinger, of sorts, of future events. Those are just a couple thrown out there, not my full list, by any means. |

i'm pretty sure i read echoes. i got it used & if i recall someone wrote on the title page: "this is a terrible book, don't read it." (never gotten a review in a book like that before or since) BTW, i didn't agree. but i could see where a person could get confused over the parallel universes & stuff. |

I, too like that episode, VC. It showed us the parental side of Tuvok, and Tim got to do what he likes to do offcamera, sing a bit, to the 'children'. It was a very nice scene with them by the campfire, and he and Tressa at the end. LOL, I remember there was a behind the scenes thing on UPN during that time or a bit later, and they show this clip, where Tim, an infamous practical joker, runs off from 'the cave', saying vehemently, ''I AIN'T GOIN' I THERE!!'' Another S2 ep I would suggest to watch is ''Meld, '' in which a member of the crew is accused of a crime-and Tuvok, not understanding why this man(played well by Brad Douriff, and later in ''Basics'')an 'unassuming Betazoid' would act this way. To that end, he asks him to volunteer to meld-with dramatic consequences, which peels away the Vulcan veneer, and it's quite eye-opening. In S3, first up to me would be '' The Chute,'' in which Kim and Paris are shown as inmates-their 'crimes' unidentified-in an alien prison. In this outing, young Harry is forced to 'mature' as he faces men who, like themselves, come to have for reasons best left to a first-time viewer, a very different 'attitude' whilst in that place. It pushes Kim and Paris to their psychological limits, and demonstartes not only Harry's courage, but his commitment to both his best friend, and his humanity. I think this in general showcases Harry in ways that may not have been so much down the line. And, I loved the little buddy moment between the guys outside Sickbay. I've always liked the Paris/Kim bromance. If you are a Doctor fan, I definitely suggest ''The Swarm,'' as we see the holographic medic facing nothing less than the end of his very existence as a sentient soul, which Kes recognized in him from the beginning. As Voyager crosses the territory of a completely alien species, with a choice not necessarily by the books, to say the least, but out of devotion to her crew, by Janeway. As this threat unfolds, Kes fights determinedly to save her dear friend from being lost. AND we get to see in holograhic form the man who created the EMH-Mark One. In ''Warlord,'' Kes is the one who needs saving, as an alien leader turned despot tossed out by his people takes control of her body, and uses it to wrest control of his government in a violent coup. Meanwhile, her friends come up with a way to free her, and Kes fights a fierce battle within her own consciousness to regain her hijacked body. IMO Jennifer definitely convinces one that this is indeed Tieran running the show, and not sweet, and demure Kes. It's a departure for her, and she makes the most of it. And, IMO, lol, she looks mighty sexy in that black leather suit!! Like that's a stretch for me to say, anyway!! Kes of course prevails in the end, with help from the Doc, and Neelix...but not without lingering effects from her ordeal, which are subsequently revealed.''Coda'' is an allout Janeway ep, in which Kathryn is mortally injured(It seems)and has 'crossed over'-or is in the process of being ready to-where she meets...her father? Who shows her the crew's efforts to save her, as well as what transpires thereafter, pleading for her to join him on the Other Side. But, she's both stubborn to stay, and more, isn't quite sure what to make of 'Daddy'. But, there are some tender 'events' that take place, including a memorial service in the Mess Hall, which is very believeable. ''Darkling'' is-YES- another Doctor/Kes episode, in which we see our holographic sawbones once more out to prove himself, by integrating personality aspects of various historical figures, in order to better understand humanity. Of course, as the title implies, things don't go well, and let's just say the Dark Side beckons via the conflux of personas imbedded within his program.Meanwhile, even as she embarks on a romance with a dashing young star traveller, whom she considers leaving Voyager with temporarily, Kes runs into the bad Doc, and tries to reach the friend who lay somewhere buried within. Bob plays the creepy well in this one. ''The Gift.'' Okay, it's a Kes episode.Sue me. But, this seems to be the end-point of things suggested by Tanis in ''Cold Fire,'' as her powers begin to exponentially increase, which, at first, amazes herself and the others, as she saves the Borg drone Seven of Nine from death-in a very unique way. Decisions are made, including the attempt by Janeway to bring the Borg from ''Scorpion'' into the Voyager family fold-with no small degree of difficulty. This ep is both the end of one character's run on the series-to my own personal regret-and the beginning of the arc of another, whose impact on the series, and the st universe, noone can deny, to be sure. There are some powerful moments between Kes and Janeway(Spoken of in interview by Mulgrew as indeed a very personal goodbye between she and Jennifer as they shot it) and Kes and Neelix, their final farewells, and some strong moments that are undenaible, whether you are a Seven fan, or not, as things move toward an inevitable conclusion, and while Kathryn fights to save the human behind the Borg. This is a must-see for anyone intested in this breakout character, and, well, for we Kes fans, as said, a sad, but sweetly-concluding last regular episode, which sees My Favorite Ocampa bestowing the titular thing to those she loves. |

Like the series itself I think its something that is being appreciated more now than when it first aired. A second wind? A renaissance? This episode in particular. I go over to st.com and see the polls. Im pleasantly surprised how Voyager ranks. Typically second behind TNG. Janeway and crew used to get a lot of flack and now they are coming out on top over DS9, ENT and the whole Kirk and caboodle. This send off got a lot of flack. A lot. But just for 4 years. Then B&B gave Enterprise a very poor and brief ending that made all the naysayers feel Endgame was a masterpiece in comparison. Very good and emotionally charged send off. A perfect compliment to the series. I had always hoped they would do an ensemble movie or mini series. Would need Q or a similar element to bring all of the time periods together. If it were a movie it would most likely be limited to each series lead and 1 side kick. Make it a mini series you could get them all in there. But sadly each year goes by an so does the opportunity. Enterprise was the baby of the franchise and its been gone nearly a decade now. Most everyone looks OLD, at least the ones that are still with us. |
