sorry, but the only people I ever see complaining about it are people complaining about it being called a holiday. Not people complaining about the word christmas.
Well, that's counter-intuitive. Because if no one complained about "Christmas" we wouldn't even be having this discussion. Someone, lots of some ones have to have been complaining about "Christmas" in order for this nonesense to start in the first place.
right, cause people and the media never get all worked up about something that has little basis in actual fact.
I'm not sure I follow.

people will look at a single incident or rumor and think it somehow means it is happening all over the place all the time. And the media with a agenda to push will harp on and on about things that are isolated incidents, or in some cases don't have any basis in fact at all.

Except, down here it does happen quite a bit. Canada may be a little more normal than the US (In fact, in a lot of ways it is).

funny, I spend a lot of time online interacting with americans and I haven't run across a single incident of someone complaining about using the word christmas, but I have run across people with complaints like the ones in this thread.

I think Wissa could be right. It seems to me that it's the fear of possible complaints that drives some of this 'PC' policymaking, rather than actual complaints that have been made. That wariness is certainly media driven to an extent- there are whole blogs out there debunking 'Political correctness gone mad' news stories one article at a time.

Mind you the USA is a highly litigious country so there may be good reason to fear the wrath of mildly irritated or inconvenienced members of the public, even if they represent a minority of one

Okay, another potential miscommunication...

:idon'tknow:

Define: "Complaint"

To me a complaint is still a complaint if someone is complaining that it's not fair to others who don't celebrate it in one fashion or another. Not be actual people who complain that they are being offended or oppressed.

Which is what drives the PC culture in the US.

So actual people complaining about being personally offended, not often, but it does happen and does end up in court quite a bit (ref Stigmata).

Mostly, PC'ers complaining on principle.

By complaining I mean the sort of stuff going on in this thread. Jespah is the the only person I have ever seen of another faith complaining about the over christmas-ing of the season. And by only, I mean in my entire life. And she didn't raise the subject. I hear lots of people complaining about how store clerks say happy holidays instead of merry christmas, or how there isn't any religious christmas carols at the school pagent.

Live long and prosper.....!!

The concept of 'peace, love and happiness' is fine by me, in fact it fits right in with my Buddhist beliefs. The problem arises, for me anyway, when other religions 'claim it' as their own !!

Look at the number of wars that have happened - that are STILL happening - the number of people that have been made to suffer - that are STILL being made to suffer - in the name of some imaginary deity. Peace, love and happiness ?? Yeah, you wish !!

Nobody goes to war because of religion. They go to war because they want to go to war and they use religion to justify it.

Yeah true - catholics and protestants are all christians, shia and sunni muslims are all islamics........shall I go on ??

I agree with you wissa, I really do. Religion IS used to justify MOST wars, but many times it's the ONLY reason for war. Unless you look at the wider aspects of war, that some people want - DEMAND - to be in charge, and war is the only way they have to 'persuade' the masses !!

Heh, I'm a trendsetter.
Once Ixalla was ready, Tathrelle cornered her. “Before we leave for work, I just want to tell you, I’m sorry. I guess I sort of shut down last night. I know you were in pain and I wasn’t too terribly supportive.” There was a wall covering in the main part of their chamber, something that Tathrelle hadn’t noticed before. She stared at it for a second and then shook her head.

Outside, a disembodied voice announced from a hidden speaker, “It is time to travel to all daytime places of employment. Transportation sleighs are available and ready. Citizens are encouraged to thank the sleigh drivers at the end of a successful transport. The government recommends haste, and requests that all pregnant persons be given preference for seating in their designated areas.”

A little distracted, Ixalla just asked, “Pain?”

Untrustworthy - by me, actually. It's for sale on Amazon

It's never the only reason. Never ever.

The Marxist interpretation of history is that all wars are fought to materially benefit the ruling class, most obviously through grabbing land and resources but also by uniting the masses against an external enemy, justifying authoritarian leadership etc. That's still not true 100% of the time but it's more credible than the religious angle.

This^ I have a word for it. That word is cowardice. So afraid of each other becoming offended or litigious that we cower or even sell out our liberties. We fought to build a country that would be free from one tyrant, thousands of miles away, only to end up being governed by thousands of tyrants who live one mile away, a tyranny of fear. When did we all become so damnably afraid of everything & everyone in this culture?

What is sad is that the United States used to be a society where impartial news reporting was an ideal that people actually strived for. Where people could be confident that when they turned on the news it would be news and not opinion. Where the fifth estate was considered a necessary pillar of democracy.
Frankly, that is what the original intention of television was, way back almost 75 years ago, a tool of information to help keep the mass populace informed, very similar to how the telephone had done, not to be a boob tube that's only real purpose is to perpetuate itself & the livelihoods of the elite that are on it, by pandering to the lowest common denominator & ultimately retarding the intelligence of an entire culture

My favorite line in the movie Broadcast News is when the anchor adlibs "I think it's all going to be alright" or something to that effect, & the station manager replies to the tv screen "Who the hell cares what YOU think?"

What upsets me is the hippy garbage PC bullshit, for no real good reason and applied unevenly to one group of people
I get you, Man. I also sense maybe that you are rightly revolted by the reverse bias of the thing. Backlash is a bitch. Without a doubt, the last individual in the free world that it is socially acceptable to bully is a White. Christian. Man. All sorts of assholes think they got a right to have a beef with that guy. Is it wrong? yeah. It's it par for the course? Pretty much

There was a Volkswagen Superbowl commercial Which an American white guy spoke in a Jamaican accent. There was such a backlash in the US about this commercial being racist that they were considering pulling it. Meanwhile, back here in Jamaica, we loved it so much that the Minister of Tourism thanked them for showing Jamaica's influence on people in a positive way.
Thank heavens they didn't pull it.

I saw a TV show once where a very upper class black woman (the daughter of a baronet or something) met a white woman who'd grown up in Jamaica. The displaced accents were pretty funny.

I'M USED TO THAT AS HALF OF MY FAMILY IS WHITE.
But I love to see the expression on non Jamaicans when they hear stuff like that.
I remember when I was living in Miami, a friend of mine who is Chinese Jamaican, came to the bar I was working at and his accent, which was even stronger than mine, tripped everyone out. It was hysterical.

Btw, by the time I realized that I had on all caps, I was just too lazy to delete and retype it. lol
