Been trying to define for someone what art is. This guy is a pragmatist who is increasingly prone to seeing the world in 1s & 0s, particularly the kind that have a $ before them A couple dictionary definitions I've come across that just don't seem to get it completely, in my opinion
Now Tolstoy seems much more on target in his essay What is Art I sort of see it that way too. (Particularly the bolded section) In fact, all the things he points to it not being, it could be if the artist needed it to be. It's only that art doesn't need to be those things exclusively to be considered art. As such, my base definition goes something like this. What do you think of my definition? How would you put it? What's your thoughts? |

Well, there are those who would argue that graffiti is a form of artistic expression. Now I've seen some that was stunningly good, and others that I'd like to take a blowtorch to, though they both had some artistic merit. I suppose it's a matter of personal preference - what some would call art, others would call graffiti !! Just to make the point, graffiti artist 'Banksy' recently had some of his work accepted for the National Gallery in London, and put on public display !! |

I think it's an imaginative expression, intended to evoke an emotional reaction. |

Once Ixalla was ready, Tathrelle cornered her. “Before we leave for work, I just want to tell you, I’m sorry. I guess I sort of shut down last night. I know you were in pain and I wasn’t too terribly supportive.” There was a wall covering in the main part of their chamber, something that Tathrelle hadn’t noticed before. She stared at it for a second and then shook her head. Outside, a disembodied voice announced from a hidden speaker, “It is time to travel to all daytime places of employment. Transportation sleighs are available and ready. Citizens are encouraged to thank the sleigh drivers at the end of a successful transport. The government recommends haste, and requests that all pregnant persons be given preference for seating in their designated areas.” A little distracted, Ixalla just asked, “Pain?” Untrustworthy - by me, actually. It's for sale on Amazon - Yeah, I'm a published author jespah My author page on Facebook Author of Untrustworthy I blog about Startrek fanfiction..Honk if you love silence. | |

A creative idea that can cause a reaction. And hopefully not to harm people in the process. |

Some art is not meant to be beautiful. Some is not meant to make anyone feel joy. They are just singular ways to make art imho. In that sense, art is to conjure something which evokes an emotional reaction that unifies artist & witness, & witnesses with one another When we hear the Moonlight Sonata. We are not joyous, but we are all given to a unity in what we're feeling |

If you're interested in art, the 2013 Reith Lectures by the BBC are delivered by the contemporary artist Grayson Perry. He talks about the nature of art, where it might go in the future etc. He's a pretty good speaker. Lecture 2 is probably most relevant: |

Not to be argumentative, but that's still debatable though. Some artists are not driven by joy or beauty when creating art. Some are of course, but it's not the defining characteristic |
