New survival show on the Discovery Channel. I'm enjoying it, but it should be noted that there's been some slight controversy surrounding the fact that the contestants have gotten some aid.

In the pilot, a girl becomes violently ill after eating a wild roasted turtle, & spends 3 days nearly incapacitated until there's claims that the show intervened & gave her IV fluids & food, behind the scenes. In the 2nd episode, they didn't conceal it though. The guy wounded his foot on a thorn which became terribly infected, & had to have it worked on & was given antibiotics

Frankly, I expect this to happen to some people. Shit luck is shit luck & it's just as useful to know that these particular people would have died if in this situation on their own. However. I don't mind it so much in the cases that they've been in. It's more common than people want to admit. Hell, even Les Stroud has been helped on occasion, by being given aid from locals before they'd let him go into the wild, because they knew he wouldn't make it without it, & he's one of the best on tv

However, the proper conduct for a show of this kind is to just end the expedition when someone is ill or injured to threatening levels, but it would have meant the 1st two episodes would have ended in pulling people out, which is a tough sell

Even the best survivalist can have shit luck & that day... they wouldn't survive

or they might survive and have their health impacted for the rest of their lives. It is just tv, we don't really expect them to die or be maimed for our entertainment do we?

Right. There's a huge difference between receiving emergency treatment & having trailers & a craft services table just off camera

They ARE enduring the wild. If the show wants to help them on occasion instead of just yanking them for any simple thing, I don't have a problem with it. The show should be willing to admit it though, & viewers ought to be reasonable about the need for it

Oh & they're NAKED! :liz:

I can't believe it took until halfway through the 2nd episode before someone invented some shoes. He said something like "I'm tired of walking around this festering shithole like a fucking infant"

Foot protection should be job #1 on your way to find water

Live long and prosper.....!!

You have to wonder though, just who these shows are aimed at - the 16yo in his bedroom, or the 90yo granny downstairs ??

They rarely, if ever, make a programme then hope people will watch it. They invariably have a target audience in mind before production. So who are their target audience ??

It's aimed at me. Seriously though, The Discovery Channel has been running survivalist shows of multiple kinds for ages. Survivorman, Man Vs. Wild, Man Woman Wild, Out Of The Wild, Dual Survival, Eco-Challenge, etc... Hardly a big risk in making more. The audience is well established

In fact, the idea isn't even new, now that I look into it. They have another show called Naked Castaway, which is just one guy for 60 days on an island. The format is just different. Naked & Afraid is a third of the time & they have two new survivalists each episode

Actually, all of Naked Castaway is airing this weekend followed by the next Naked & Afraid. Looks like I'll be watching some survival tv sunday night

I guess the only question is where do they go with survival tv after sending people in naked?

This show is only 21 days. Survivor is 39. Losing 30lbs in 3 weeks is insane. They're lucky if they score 2 meals the entire time, if you go by what the episode shows

I think the best explanation I've heard is from the sad food poisoning girl. "Expert survivalists are always looking for a way to exercise their skills". Basically, if skills & abilities have never been tested, then how do you really know that you possess them?

Which is why I gravitate to these types of shows as opposed to game shows like "Survivor". The one thing these Discovery Channel shows tend to do is get experts, survival instructors, military specialists in primitive survival techniques, etc... and their only motivation is to prove themselves, & well, I suppose in this show's case they might also be entertaining the idea that if they show themselves well, & are likable & interesting enough, they might become the next famous tv survivalist like Les Stroud or Bear Grylls, and score their own successful tv show, where they can then earn a living on tv

However, in both episodes I've watched, they just end up defeated. That's what's interesting. Watching the pros go belly up. Maybe only one of them would have actually survived the entire 21 days, were they on their own. Infected foot guy, food poisoning girl, & sleeping in a shelter fire guy, could have easily perished from those situations

Ultimately.... living alone in the wild kills e v e r y o n e
It's just a matter of time before something happens that overwhelms you, an accident, a predator attack, you get sick. Hell, a tooth cavity. People die. It's the one thing we all do. The wilderness just makes it that much easier

Even the greatest survivalist of modern times, Dick Proenneke got help on occassion

We had a saying in the Marines, "A day you don't challenge yourself, is a day wasted."

In short, for the challenge.

So I watched the first two shows last night. I thought they were very entertaining. I don't know how "grown up" I could be around a naked woman. Suffering or not.

I thought the first guy, was kind of a douche. Not a big one, but he would have annoyed me. The SEER guy, I would have gotten along with very well. I laughed because the lady he was with reminded me a lot of my wife. Whenever we go shopping, I have a target. She'll stop me 30 times in 50 feet with, "Oooh look at this!"

I'll keep watching. Thanks for the heads up Mojo. I'm currently on a survival show marathon now. Going back to the beginning of Dual Survival now.

Well, you'll want to know that Sunday is a Discovery Channel marathon. All four episodes of Naked Castaway, & then the next episode of Naked & Afraid. At least on my side of the free world, it will be from 6-10PM

& yeah, I'd have a rather tough time getting past the wandering eye. Guys look at a naked woman instinctually, especially Americans. Yes, guy #1 was a fair amount of jerk, & then he just got worse as life began sucking. He even admitted to some past social difficulties. The mental state of a person is just as important as their physicality & skills. Guy #2 would have done wonderfully I bet, if he'd only come up with his sandals idea sooner

I haven't seen any of Dual Survival since Dave Canterbury got fired. He was the perfect balance to Cody Lundin. For what it's worth, I liked him. I also liked Mykel Hawke's show with his wife too, & Les Stroud grew on me. I thought he was boring at first. I don't care for Bear Grylls. It seems like his show's goal is not about survival so much as it's about man VERSUS wild. As a result, he takes a lot of ridiculous risks & does stupid stunts that should not be encouraged if you are in the precarious position of having to survive time in the wild

Prime example

A woman shopping is on a magical adventure. A guy shopping is on a search & destroy mission. They should never shop together  I move through a store like O.J in a Hertz commercial

The Captain's back...

When I read the title of this thread it reminded me of the early days of internet bootie call, you know before people had scanners to post pictures and we had to trust their self description? Cant tell you how many guys told me they looked like Mark McGwire or one of the Baldwin boys :wissa:
