Lately there has been some big stories about the fashion industry and the size of their models. Ambercrombie and Finch said they don't have plus sizes because they don't want their brand on fat people they want it on "cool" people
http://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/abercrombie-and-fitch-ceo-mike-jeffries-apologizes-for-cool-kids-comment-2013175

now h&m have come out with plus size models in a mainstream ad campaign

http://www.today.com/news/hm-ceo-some-our-models-were-too-skinny-6C10135395

What say you? is this a good thing because it show a realistic woman's body? or is it a bad thing because it normalizes obesity, a growing health problem in north america?

I'm of two minds with this, as someone who's lost over 100 pounds but at one point that was me being down 180. Keeping it off is a LOT more difficult at age 50, lemme tell ya.

Stick thin is not normal, and clothing manufacturers have been shoveling that down our throats for decades. That junk's gotta end. And anti-fat prejudice needs to go, too. When I got married in '92 (I think I weighed pretty close to what I do now, but I am far more muscle-bound these days and so I am 3 sizes smaller), I recall going to one place for a gown and the fitter being nasty and then her complaining that they'd have to put an extra panel into a gown for me to fit into it. Not so subtly telling me - how the hell did YOU ever land a husband, you hog!

Of course my mother and I voted with our wallets and went elsewhere. But it was nasty and uncalled-for. So I welcome larger models and mannekins.

But then the question is - how far does it all go? And the idea of normalizing it is tricky. When I was a kid, my mother's uncles were all obese. These were guys in their 60s and older. Now, many of my cousins are. They are in their 20s. What'll happen to them in 4 decades, if they live that long? Even regaining 80 pounds, I am still in the thin column for my mother's family.

Economics dictate that larger clothes are more expensive, but they are often cut so poorly that people look bigger, and they look worse. I welcome more quality. And I am also aware that people are overweight in all sorts of different ways, particularly women. We can get bustier, or bigger cabooses, or larger bellies. A size 22 (that's what I was when I got married) can't, really, be uniform, because people differ. And it's an immensely complicated problem. Solve it and you can make a mint.

I could rant on about a society which glorifies McDonald's commercials and has no problem with celebrities endorsing Coke but looks down its nose at celebrities endorsing Jenny Craig or Weight Watchers. This problem is huge, and it's endemic, and I am already writing a novel here. But ... sigh ... it ain't easy, and the answers aren't, either.
Once Ixalla was ready, Tathrelle cornered her. “Before we leave for work, I just want to tell you, I’m sorry. I guess I sort of shut down last night. I know you were in pain and I wasn’t too terribly supportive.” There was a wall covering in the main part of their chamber, something that Tathrelle hadn’t noticed before. She stared at it for a second and then shook her head.

Outside, a disembodied voice announced from a hidden speaker, “It is time to travel to all daytime places of employment. Transportation sleighs are available and ready. Citizens are encouraged to thank the sleigh drivers at the end of a successful transport. The government recommends haste, and requests that all pregnant persons be given preference for seating in their designated areas.”

A little distracted, Ixalla just asked, “Pain?”

Think I've mentioned already that Madam has a figure very similar to Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine) Posted Image

But having said that, we both have friends and colleagues that are 'larger sized' as well as those who are 'stick thin'. Generally, it's the larger people that are more amiable and easier to get along with !!

I think it's a great idea because there have been studies that just because someone is "overweight" doesn't mean they aren't healthy. I myself have lost almost 30 pounds but gained 10 back. I intend to lose 30 more at least. BUT having said that, I am much healthier now then I was in my 20s and early 30s being about 10 or 15 pounds heavier now. It all comes down to health. And how comfortable that person is.

As far as the models, being an average size of a 12 or 14 is just that average. Most women don't have the time to work full or even part time, take care of the kids, the pets, taking the kids to activities, the house, the shopping, working out either at home or in the gym and then have a little time to themselves. A lot of us eat one or maybe even 2 decent meals a day and maybe a not so nutritious or "good" one per day. And the weight of us is more than that of some models in the 80s and now. But look at the women of the 40s and 50s.

Marilyn Monroe was what a 12? Is that FAT to anyone? I would get down on my knees and thank the good Lord up above that I looked like that. And I am happy with the way I look now for the first time in MANY years.

The size of the models made size 5/6 girls look fat and that made it NOT healthy of what we should be. How many women of 5"10 weigh 120 lbs and think they are fat? Unfortunately many of them. The idea of having stores target us bigger girls is a blessing.

Let them run ads that feature all kinds of people. It can only ad to their revenue anyhow. As to the issue of normalizing obesity, I doubt they'll be using people who are categorically obese, & even if there's some that fall into the category of being overweight for their height, it could hardly be enough to offset the fact that there are legions of fashion models who are underweight, which is at least as unhealthy, probably more so.

From the look of them, you tell me who you think the unhealthy one is

Jeanna Sabatino 5'10" 180 lbs

Stephanie Rice 5'10" 150lbs

Ayup.

I like the idea of using athletes as models. The Williams sisters, in particular, as they are anything but tiny, plus they are women of color - and they are darker in skin tone. You never used to see models of African descent, particularly darker-skinned men and women. I remember when Lena Horne was one of the darkest people you saw on mainstream TV or the movies. The Uhura of nuTrek is far different from the Uhura of TOS, and it's not just due to writing and lens flares - Nichelle Nichols was a rarity on TV.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand - a lot of anti-psychotic medications make people gain weight. And there are also a lot of people who are likely clinically depressed, but are undiagnosed, or who need treatment but can't afford it. How many of them are medicating with food?

Hmm, food can be used as a medication - vitamin c from oranges or proteins from meat, for example. Taken in moderation they're not harmful, but for the clinically depressed or somebody who's 'comfort eating', they can have a profound effect on the body. Which is why we are encouraged to eat a balanced diet, so these effects and other problems don't occur !!

No I'm not a dietician, but have heard this explanation from those who are plenty of times !!

just beacuse you are a thin as a model does not make you obese..

and plus size models do not have rolls of fat all over their bodies... most of them even have flat bellies...
I have seen a few excessively large models... but those arent the average plus size model.. like most waif thin models arent the norm for "regular" models

I applaud companies who are usuing more realistic size models... which is usually a size 8,10, and 12

interestingly enough.. they would be considered plus size in the modeling world

:) Awesome.

And it is a screwed up society we live in that calls the Williams sisters "plus-sized".

The Williams sisters might be curvaceous, but I wouldn't call them overweight. They wouldn't be able to get around a tennis court so quick if they were. Well, not without a resuscitation break from a medical team, every point that was scored !!

In old times in Russia the surname "-ova" was designated for the commoners,

actually, women had/have names ending in -ova. (yes, that's what i noticed at that link.)

Quote:

Historically, the -ovich (-ovna) form was reserved for the Russian aristocracy, while commoners had to use -in, -yn, -ov, -ev, etc. (for a son; e.g., Boris Alekseev, Dmitri Kuzmin) and -eva, -ova, -ina, etc. (for a daughter; e.g., Sofiya Alekseeva, Anastasiya Kuzmina). Over time, the -ovich (-ovna) form spread to commoners favored by the tsar, high-ranking bureaucrats, and during the 19th century, to all segments of Russian society.
