I have the opinion that most people in Hollywood, or those who end up famous, go insane to one degree or another.

Child actors, tend to fare worse because they are children thrown into adult situation with adult pressures and they usually peak when their little. Imagine being 25 and realizing that 15 yo you is the coolest, most successful you'll ever be. Shitty.

Very few seem to avoid that inevitability.

She was so very gorgeous at one time, though. Very sad indeed.

very sad. I don't think you can turn childhood on it's head and have children supporting their parents without some severe damage happening. We need our childhoods, and if it gets sold you can never be normal

It's pretty well impossible to be stable minded surrounded in the reality they exist in. It's the same deal as growing up in Compton or South Central, & ending up in a gang, or growing up in Afghanistan & ending up a terrorist at 12. In the vast majority of the population, a person only becomes or achieves for themselves what their environment allows. Ultimately, Hollywood is a self perpetuating culture now, & this is the awful result

I have the opinion that most people in Hollywood, or those who end up famous, go insane to one degree or another.
It certainly seems that way, but ultimately it's because they live in an altered state of reality, to one degree or another. They exist on the fringe of normalcy & that's unhealthy. Prison, war, poverty, & fame... what do they all have in common? Extremism. It is detrimental to a person's state of mind to live in an extreme, prolongedly. It doesn't matter who it is. Some last longer than others, but everyone will suffer adverse effects in time.

This is why I don't understand why we idolize them anyway, like we want to be them. To be them would mean to not be us. You or I wouldn't be able to be us, if we spent every waking minute of our lives surrounded by people who are only there because we are famous or rich, or can aid them in becoming famous or rich, & we sustain our lives on the fact that people think we're good looking or entertaining, and all our relationships were with other people in the same maniacal shit storm. We'd probably go batshit too

How can I know that? Observation. I observe that every time someone seems to go batshit in Hollywood, it is almost exactly like when everybody else goes batshit. Becoming addicts, jacking up their faces & bodies, screaming at cops "Don't you know WHO I AM?"

If everyone goes crazy in the same exact way, it isn't them that's insane, it's a stimulus affecting them, that's altering their state of mind. No wonder Dave Chapelle flew off to Africa never to be heard from again. That's what a sane person would do. Living in an extreme like that will undoubtedly slant your perspective. Like single drops of water on a rock over a century. It's just a drop, but it will wear you down

This is why when I see Britney Spears smiling now, all I see is....

I think that is a huge generalization and exaggeration. There are lots of people who have been and continue to be hugely famous yet are as normal as the rest of us. Look at Jerry Seinfeld, Michael J Fox or Ted Dansen. Sure there is probably a slightly larger rate of crazy in famous people but I think there is a perception problem as well. Famous crazy people get way more press than the sane famous people. I also think that a larger number of slightly unstable people are attracted to "show biz" than, say, banking. I certainly can say that there is a larger proportion of crazy people working in the beauty industry than in the general public. That combined with the effects of too much money too young and I think you can explain away most crazy hollywood people.

I don't really know anymore. Mel Gibson used to seem really down to earth. Meg Ryan too. Look at them now. They went nutty long after they were young. Kenny Rogers looks like a freak of nature now. Ted Danson is not a picture of normalcy by any means, & neither was Jerry Seinfeld, until he got himself out of the lime light. Michael J. Fox had himself a serious reality check. Ain't no living in lala land when you live with a daily health struggle. It also tends to get the press to back the hell off a person. Nothing sexy in selling magazines about a guy struggling with MS

Plus, there's a certain amount of damage control that goes on with the hugely famous, that preserves their image of being normal, that we would never know about. No one thought Tom Cruise was all that nutty way back in the day, until it was just too hard to cover up. Same thing can be said of Travolta.

Also, there are multitudes of levels of fame. The stresses of being a young, & beautiful female actress or pop star are worlds apart from being a 50+ comedian

Truth is, everybody is a little screwy in their own way. Fame & fortune just tends to throw it up under the spot light & turn up the heat. Normalcy is a myth anyhow. I still stand by the notion that when stars go nutty, it's always the same old stories, which is more of an indictment of the circumstance than each of the vast numbers of individuals that have gone cuckoo

When your life revolves around getting everyone to love you, that is an extreme way to live, & as such, a recipe for mental stress, psychosis, & potential breakdown. Does it happen to all of them? No, much like any other way of living, some people are cut out to live that way, but it's fair to say that it would be a pretty small percentage of the population that can hack that way of life without developing adverse effects

& some people get over the hump, & go on to have some semblance of normalcy, like Jodie Foster. Hell, somehow Ron Howard's whole family have been in show biz for decades, & not a loon in the bunch. Go figure, but that's really an exception

Live long and prosper.....!!

Then again, the media has to take a large portion of the blame. The crowds of photographers etc that follow Britney Spears around 24/7, setting up encampments outside her home, writing all kinds of BS about her whether true or not......there's only so much pressure a human mind can take - even a well-adjusted mind - before it all starts to have an effect. I believe that it's called a self-fulfilling prophecy - they report somebody is going crazy, then hound that person until it happens !!
R.I.P. Gummy, we'll miss you bro

Such a shame. Amanda was such an incredibly beautiful girl...I had thought the same thing of Christina Aguilera, and the same level of "ghettto" hit her as well.
The unambiguous and defined essence of a truest friend, is a single soul, shared in two bodies. A person who completes you so, that it pains you when they hurt, and sustains you when they are with you, no matter how far.

It seems to me it more often happens to women.... I think there are serious problems with Hollywood over sexualizing young girls
especially those in the music industry... its not long before they are looking like cheap hookers being pimped out to the world.

Former child star explains why young actors 'go crazy'

She wasn't "Olsen twin famous" but she did begin her movie career at age 5, so Mara Wilson can understand why it may seem to the rest of the world that young stars like Justin Bieber or Amanda Bynes have lost their minds.

Best known for her roles in 1990s films "Mrs. Doubtfire" and "Matilda," Wilson turned to humor site Cracked.com to list the reasons why she believes child stars "go crazy." The result is a thoughtful seven-point explanation of how show business can be a trap and why "not many child stars make it out of Hollywood alive or sane."

Wilson, who is no longer acting, attended New York University and is pursuing a writing career. Her parents were against her becoming an actress, but supported her wishes to give the profession a try, protecting her emotionally and financially every step of the way. Most child actors don't have that, she writes.

"The next time a former child star is in the news, look at the age at which he or she started performing," Wilson writes. "Then imagine making a life-changing decision at that age. Chances are good he or she wasn't the one who made it."

Child actors are not allowed to act out as adolescents, so by the time they become young adults, they rebel, "often with major consequences," Wilson writes. They also have trouble dealing with rejection since they were adored for much of their childhood, but don't have what it takes to leave it all behind, she writes.

"It's easier for them to hold onto what they did in their past and make money that way," Wilson writes. "Besides, everyone they know is in the business, and after having people take their money, reject them for their looks, and turn them into a sex object, they're not going to be especially trusting. The sleazy bastards you know are better than the sleazy bastards you don't."

Wilson recalls walking a red carpet when she was seven years old and being asked about Hugh Grant's prostitution arrest.

"While I knew he'd been arrested, I didn't understand what for and didn't feel comfortable answering," she writes. "My father called the station the next day to suggest that they, you know, not talk to a child about soliciting sex. But he was rebuffed, and the complaint was ignored. Even then, as a kid, I knew that parental power was gone."

Wilson describes herself as a normal-looking woman and "reformed drama nerd" living in a two-bedroom apartment "in one of the less cool neighborhoods of New York." Her advice to, say, Lindsay Lohan? "Get the hell out of acting and into something soothing. Take up botany or something."

To the rest of the kids who want to act, she says, " Make sure it's really your choice, get out of it when it stops being fun, and get an education."
