Mestral; What happened after ENT's "Carbon Creek"

Mestral had left Carbon Creek, PA a year after he arrived with T'Mir and Stron. Their survey ship crashed here and it took another Vulcan ship captained by Tellus three months to arrive. In that time, he got accustomed to life on Earth . He decided to stay and T'Mir "went along" with his story.

He had a brief relationship with Maggie but decided he would have to end it. How could he explain the Vulcan ears? He told her he was in a relationship with T'Mir and was not fully over her yet. Maggie understood. He and Maggie remained friends until he left.

Mestral decided to move to Brooklyn, NY. This was 1958. The Brooklyn Dodgers moved to LA a few years earlier and they were still missing their team. Brooklyn that is. He became a Yankees fan. He fell in love with the sport in Carbon Creek and to him, being a Yankees fan was only logical.

He would listen to the games on his radio in his Court Street apartment. He settled on this area because a lot of Italians lived in this area, and some Italians are olive skinned. He fit in perfectly. He grew his hair around his ears which only helped him.

Mestral made many friends in his new neighborhood. There were Charlie and Kim, a newly married couple that lived across the hall. Bob was a widower that lived across the street. Mestral would take him shopping once a week in the car he bought. Anna was a wannabe actress that lived around the corner from a place called Rhode Island. She had a crush on him but as with Maggie, he could not get involved. He had 5 years to go before Pon Farr would occur, so he just remained friends with her. Mike and Rhonda lived above him. Mike became his best friend. They would go to Yankee games together.

Mestral got a job at a bakery 2 blocks away from home. He made the Italian bread and cookies. What would his family or even T'Mir think of him now? No Vulcan technology to help him. No Vulcans around. No Plomeek soup. He got accustomed to human food and decided after a while, it wasn't that bad.

He got along with everyone. He lived there for 10 years before he moved again. Since Vulcans age slower than humans and live a lot longer, Mestral was 35 when the survey ship crashed, he arrived on Court Street at 36. He told his friends that he had to move back to PA to live with his sister. He said that she was sick and needed him to help her with her children. Her husband had died in WWII and they all understood.

So, in 1968, he moved to New York City. He liked the atmosphere of a big city. This way he was close to his beloved Yankees and if he saw anyone he could say he was visiting. He got a job at another bakery but this time his apartment was above the shop. He made friends again but in another 10 years he had to move.

He stayed in NY for many years. In such a place, you can easily "get lost", so it was easy for him to move around the city and never be seen by old friends. He was fascinated by this city. The sports, the Broadway plays, the people, the cars, the Empire State Building, he saw the building of the World Trade Center and unfortunately the destruction of it. He stayed working in bakeries. There were many around the city and he decided that he liked it.

He loved to see the expressions on peoples faces when he would uncover the cakes he made for them. Mestral supressed his Vulcan emotions but learned to let some show so he could fit in. And he enjoyed a few emotions in particular, happiness and pride.

When Ponn Farr was upon him, he'd find a "girlfriend". He knew it was unfair to the woman because he could never remain with her but while he was with her, he treated her like a "princess". He heard this expression in a movie, so he made that part of his routine.

The year 2012 brought him to Montana. He was getting older and he knew Montana was a large state with much wilderness. He wanted a nice safe place for when he "died". He had time, but it was only logical to start to look now. He wanted to find the perfect spot.

He began working as a cook in a bar where he met Zefram Cochrane. He thought the man to be very intelligent but a bit aloof. Cochrane started to work on a warp engine. Mestral could not believe what was happening.

When he wanted to stay on Earth, he had said he wanted to see a pre-warp civilization. What he saw was sports, celebrity affairs. But he also "saw" Neil Armstrong walk on the Earth's moon. He saw NASA blossom. He witnessed many wars and much death. He questioned his decision to stay on Earth, often.

"Why did I stay?", he said to his cats, Lucy and Ricky. They would just look at him.

He got a place on Cochranes' crew and was in awe now at his brilliance. When Cochrane had succeeded, he could not believe it. He had witnessed Earth from the 1950s when space travel was in it's infancy and now, this.

When his people arrived in 2063, Mestral was dumbfounded. Surely, they would know him. First contact was made and he had not been discovered. A year later, he was working with Cochrane in his lab. A Vulcan crew was there when he turned and ran right into T'Mir.

"I thought I recognized you Mestral", she said.

"T'Mir" was all he could muster.

"How did you wind up here? I hope you did not share any Vulcan secrets", T'Mir stated.

Mestral explained to her his reasons for being here and with his involvement with Cochrane.

"So they did it all on their own", T'Mir said. "Fascinating. I did not think they would do it so soon."

"It's been over 100 years T'Mir", he said.

"EXACTLY", T'Mir stated. "A relatively short period of time by Earth standards".

They spoke every day. It felt weird to him. Good to speak to a friend and have Vulcans around, but none of the others knew he was a Vulcan. Should he tell them?

T'Mir encouraged him. "You would be an asset to the Vulcan High Command. You could tell them of your time with humans. Give them guidance and advice on how to handle them in all situations."

He got in touch with the Vulcan High Command. At first, they didn't seem interested in what he had to say. But slowly, they understood his reasoning and gathered all his intel on Earth. He told them of the cities he visited, medical advancements and most importantly warp drive. He reassured the High Command, as he did with T'Mir, that he did not influence Cochrane at all. Cochrane did it all on his own.

He remained on Earth for many years as a liaison to Vulcan. No one on Earth ever suspected he was a Vulcan and had lived on Earth all those years.

When he died, he had a special request to be "buried" on Vulcan. No one thought this was strange since he had a public relationship with T'Mir. It was quite logical to honor it. He got to live out his life in two cultures on two planets. Each different, but quite the same. He had a good life.

Published Sentient Marsupial Canid

I saw that, too.

I think you could expand this piece quite a bit, maybe use it as a framework for vignettes about Mestral's life on Earth. Maybe he sees Maris hit his 60th, or where he was on 9/11, and how it affected him.
Once Ixalla was ready, Tathrelle cornered her. “Before we leave for work, I just want to tell you, I’m sorry. I guess I sort of shut down last night. I know you were in pain and I wasn’t too terribly supportive.” There was a wall covering in the main part of their chamber, something that Tathrelle hadn’t noticed before. She stared at it for a second and then shook her head.

Outside, a disembodied voice announced from a hidden speaker, “It is time to travel to all daytime places of employment. Transportation sleighs are available and ready. Citizens are encouraged to thank the sleigh drivers at the end of a successful transport. The government recommends haste, and requests that all pregnant persons be given preference for seating in their designated areas.”

A little distracted, Ixalla just asked, “Pain?”

I was going to do that, but I wrote this last year and someone asked about it. so I wanted to put it out there for them. I think eventually I will expand on it to have him see 9/11 and some baseball history. I enjoyed working on him. It was a labor of love and I truly don't think I am done with it.

Thanks J.

:) Cool. Clever ideas therein; ' olive-skinned Italians', heh heh......''Lucy, and Ricky'' Loved that. And, as far as him allowing himself to experience emotions, even without the trellium, T'Pol's own mother told her, in her last moments of life, ''Your emotions have always been close to the surface.'' And, was it REALLY logic, purely, that motivated Valeris, decades hence?....Working as a cook in a bar, and meet Zeph, yup.....

.....I always have liked CC. You pulled it forward, with colors. Maybe Starbase Studios needs to gear up for a script to do....wink, wink. They say, write what you know. And our ReedEnterprise, she knows her N.Y.C......oh, and a teeny suggestion: Remember a certain human, who let's say, got to go on one long 'educational' trip offworld??.....HE and his gal Friday were in the Big Apple.....there ya go, RE....!!!

It also made sense, that T'Mir would return, as she was of the crew to first covertly arrive on Earth....
