Live long and prosper.....!!

Ok, so here's the scenario......

You have been selected to crew a space probe, on a months-long round-trip to Jupiter and back. But this is a large probe, it has rooms and artifiicial gravity and you can move around without any problems, and food is provided by the on-board replicators providing any food you could want !!

Your mission is to gather as much information about the giant planet as you can, as well as the smaller satellite worlds in orbit around Jupiter. However, for one reaon or another, your crew-mates have all pulled-out of the mission, leaving you alone the only remaining crewman who can successfully complete the mission !!

The question is, since you have no choice but to accept the mission, do you think you would survive the round-trip and complete all of your mission parameters ??

Personally, I don't think I'd have a problem. I don't mind my own company (though I'll be honest I'd really miss Madam), and completing the mission shouldn't be a problem !!

So, how about you guys ??

I think I could do it provided I had some of my "things" with me.

Thank you Reed and AWOL for responding, very much appreciated !!

I've had another look around the probe, and the good news is that since all of your crewmates have rejected the mission there is plenty of locker space available, so if you want to take some of your personal things along it shouldn't be a problem, but remember that weight will still be restricted - so perhaps that life-sized stone statue of your favourite singer is likely to be a no-no. And, although there is plenty of room available, livestock would not be allowed - you wouldn't want your friendly gerbil to be chewing on the power cables, just when you need them !!

How do these affect your decision ??

well....i don't need a lot of stuff really.

but i worry about the being away from people for so long.
i'm not a social being, but being by myself for that long is a concern.

I understand your concerns AWOL, truly I do. With Madam working in the US, while I was stuck in the UK, and only seeing each other at weekends when we could, I didn't think our relationship could stay the course, it was just a case of who would give up the first. But fortunately we kept in mind the fact that we WOULD see each other, and that helped us through the hard times !!

I see the space probe in the same way. Yes it will be hard and for a long time, but at the end of it I will be back with Madam and the people who mean the most to me. All I have to do is survive until then. If you could see yourself in the same way, then your solitude wouldn't seem so bad - just keep your mind on the 'prize' at the end !!

I'd miss the Earth so much, I'd miss my wife..........
Heck, replictors that make any food you want! Sign me up! I could months alone just on all you could eat sushi! Plus nobody around to complain about the currey binging................................oh and the scenery around Jupiter and its moons would be cool too.
What?!?!?!?!

...........................

The mission would have to be restructured, such that its objectives could be achieved by one person instead of the multiple that it was designed for

And we have to overlook the fact that it would be rather irresponsible to send one person alone into deep space. Unless you had considerable automated assistance to aid you, there's countless variables that could happen which might overwhelm a single individual. After all, how often during your life over the past year did you need someone else to do, fix, or ask something etc...? We don't correctly value how often we require someone else

Having said that though, I'm as independent & solitary as a person can be, and if it's a question of whether I think I could manage a technical job for a prolonged duration of utter solitude? Yes, I think I could do that, though some fancy communication tech which would allow me to regularly contact Earth would be really useful, & probably not out of the question since this scenario boasts, food replication, automated aid, artificial gravity, & likely better propulsion than anything we've currently sent to Jupiter & back, which would have taken nearly 3 years, a duration we've reduced, in this scenario, by a third apparently

Seriously Dude, rent Moon (2009) with Sam Rockwell. It's about a sole person operating a lunar mining station. It's an excellent film, in which Kevin Spacey provides the voice of the artificial intelligence (Gerty) that aids him. Wonderful performances from both

Think I may have seen that movie, but can't be 100% sure. You raise some interesting points Mojo, I'll certainly give them some thought. And thanks for your responses guys !!
