Boston, you're my home; I heard the news today, oh boy

I was just listening to someone lament about how the surviving "bomber" was going to get all the "bells and whistles" (ie a trial).

I think it's a real sad commentary on my nation when this seems to be the prevailing opinion. The bomber is the "alleged" bomber that's presumed innocent until he's received his right to a fair trial and has been proven guilty.

Only, we like to throw those rights away when we find it convenient and the bad guy is unpopular.

Hmmm true it's seemed to have been forgotten that he's still classed as a "suspect"

One thing I did hear on the news here when they first charged him was when it all starts properly at the end of may, it's like that his lawyer will say that he'll cooperate but only if the death sentance attached to the charge is dropped.

But like I said I don't understand it all enough to know what effect that will have.

I consider it no small miracle that they didn't just put a bag on his head & whisk him off to Gitmo to get an early start on the water boarding

America is a country invented & populated by people from other countries. Just as everything beautiful of the world was brought here, so too was everything horrible of it. We are the whole of the world, captured in a test tube, & more often than not, the concoction is on the verge of brimming over, & a vast array of lamebrains from all the darkest corners of humanity devise ways to clamp down on it until it may destroy the whole thing some day

Didn't I hear that he has a really good lawyer. For the life of me, I can't remember who it was. Damn

I haven't heard who his lawyer is. It would be an interesting challenge and of course there are folks who also want the attendant publicity that goes with being the one to make the defense.

I would defend, likely, under things like chain of custody but also Miranda/5th Amendment. I would also have the guy throw his brother under the bus as the brother is dead. E. g. claim he was the mastermind, etc.

To get back to the very beginning topic, I am going to the Red Cross tomorrow to give blood. :)
Once Ixalla was ready, Tathrelle cornered her. “Before we leave for work, I just want to tell you, I’m sorry. I guess I sort of shut down last night. I know you were in pain and I wasn’t too terribly supportive.” There was a wall covering in the main part of their chamber, something that Tathrelle hadn’t noticed before. She stared at it for a second and then shook her head.

Outside, a disembodied voice announced from a hidden speaker, “It is time to travel to all daytime places of employment. Transportation sleighs are available and ready. Citizens are encouraged to thank the sleigh drivers at the end of a successful transport. The government recommends haste, and requests that all pregnant persons be given preference for seating in their designated areas.”

A little distracted, Ixalla just asked, “Pain?”

strange.. cause that is the response I expected to hear from people.. I expected to hear people cry out for his death.. but Ive been hearing more "innocent until proven guilty"

I assumed I was hearing that because he was the younger brother, and people think that he may have been led by the brother as opposed to thinking for himself...

Im 100% sure that if the older brother was alive and the younger dead... I would be hearing more cries of death

(not talking about whats heard on tv.. but from the people around me)

He's 19. And while it's easy to make boneheaded moves at that age (and we all have), committing an act of wanton destruction is usually where people draw the line.

Plus we consider 18 to be the age of majority here. You can drive, vote, marry and be drafted. He's competent - no one is claiming that he isn't. I feel that statements that he was led astray are really off the mark.

actS of destruction. There were two bombings, a car jacking, a cop killing, a car chase where they lobbed bombs out the window, & two full blown shootouts. The kid's lucky he didn't just end up dead on the spot

Actually... He'd probably be better off dead already. Although it's hard to look on it this way, it's luckier for us that he's alive, because it offers us more of a chance to find out if they were independent or getting support, & if it's the latter, from whom

Gonna be a hard sell, saying this kid was just along for the ride or wrangled by the older brother. Apparently, they were talking about taking their two man show on tour to Times Square

I can't be sure, because a trial can go all sorts of funky, but it's hard to see this going any other way than death penalty. If it doesn't it'll be because they want to grill him indefinitely about whatever connections get uncovered, if any

I may be wrong, but didn't his lawyer say he would tell everything if they took the death penalty off the table?

Oh, I know it's multiple acts. My point is more that the vast, vast majority of people would not have done even one. And of course there are tons more than one that were committed here.

Perhaps it's who you're surrounded by. I work with a lot of people who'd classify themselves as "conservative". You know, small government, until I need a big one.

I heard that mentioned. Not sure if it's a definite but a reporter on CNN when looking at the chargers said that was more than likely to be said.

Full cooperation for removing the death penalty.

It is a way to do it (defense). Probably a smart offer, particularly if he can speak intelligently to real terror cells and not just a few guys in a cave, bitching.

as far as I'm concerned that is the only valid reason to have a death penalty at all. So you can use as a barganing chip. If only you never had to use it in order for that to work.
