My guess, and this may make me look like an ignorant ass, is that there is a central service with "captioners" who either:

1. Caption recorded shows
2. Caption the live shows (that's why thy alhways have tie-phos)

for the news & stuff it's live. might be on a small delay,
like they do in case someone curses.

for tv shows & movies, they supposedly have the script.

the worst example i've seen is the closed captioning for the
movie crouching tiger, hidden dragon. (an over rated moved. IMHO)
nothing in the closed captioning was what was being said. my guess
is they were using a different translation or something.

I have no idea what the answer is...

but I used to assume someone watched tv and typed it out.. cause there are always typos and missing words especially with live shows..

but... now that I can speak text messages into my phone..and it will type them for me... I think it may be a system like that. its pretty accurate.. only has occasional mistakes
All my posts are done from my tablet. I apologize for all strange errors in my posts... as swype hates me. :violet:

I thought the same thing Violet did.

And anytime I watched a show with it on, it always had a few second delay with words.

Far as I can tell, it's typed. For live shows, it is as fast as they can go, so there are going to be numerous typos. For recorded programming, there are companies that do this - and quality varies.

My MIL is deaf (she reads lips; we sign a little but not much). Whenever we go there, all of the TVs are on cc, and so you can see the differences. We also call on the phone via relayer (used to use a TTY to do our own typing, but relayers are free) or just chat using AIM. Anyway, relayers are also of varying quality plus they will often try to indicate mood (e. g. "sounds angry"). It is a weird way to communicate with people.
Once Ixalla was ready, Tathrelle cornered her. “Before we leave for work, I just want to tell you, I’m sorry. I guess I sort of shut down last night. I know you were in pain and I wasn’t too terribly supportive.” There was a wall covering in the main part of their chamber, something that Tathrelle hadn’t noticed before. She stared at it for a second and then shook her head.

Outside, a disembodied voice announced from a hidden speaker, “It is time to travel to all daytime places of employment. Transportation sleighs are available and ready. Citizens are encouraged to thank the sleigh drivers at the end of a successful transport. The government recommends haste, and requests that all pregnant persons be given preference for seating in their designated areas.”

A little distracted, Ixalla just asked, “Pain?”

Untrustworthy - by me, actually. It's for sale on Amazon

Live long and prosper.....!!

Despite my increasing deafness, I prefer not to activate closed captions or subtitles. For one thing they detract from what's happening on screen by having to read them, and for another they're often not on screen long enough to read anyway. If am alone I'll wear headphones, which helps. But if watching tv with Madam I'll do without them (cos they do knock out the tv speaker) and try to keep up with the conversations !!
