The first one (A Study in Pink), because it was a genuinely clever modernisation of the Sherlock Holmes character. And the last one, (Reichenbach Fall) because it did something completely new and inventive with the character.

The others were all a bit too silly for my tastes. But i'm a fan of the books, read them all in the space of about six weeks when I was 14.

Oooh I love them all, I rahter like sillyness. And Moriaty is just brilliant.

Gotta admit though that I haven't gotten around to read the book, planning to though (not a lot of time for reading at the moment though :( )

I do like it. I was unsure of the premise at first, but it's growing on me, mostly because the style is done admirably & the actors for Holmes & Watson are tremendously good

I can see where Stiggy is coming from, but I also liked the last episode of series 1 & the first of series 2. Basically, the only ones I find wanting are the mid-seasons, The Blind Banker & Hounds of Baskerville. They were just a bit too frivolous, kind of killing time between the big openers & the big closers

Ultimately, Moriarty grew on me as well, but initially I didn't take to the goofy kind of portrayal that they were doing with him. It just seemed campy to me, & it was a bit disappointing, considering that even though they are clearly trying to make Holmes & Watson fit modern sensibilities, the actual core of the characters are somewhat traditional, at least from my perspective, or maybe just in comparison to the cinematic Holmes franchise which goes a completely offbeat direction with the characters, even though it's period set. In a way, the movies and the tv show are polar opposites

I'd be interested to know what Stigs thinks of the current Holmes movie franchise

There are very few films that I will give up on halfway through...

I only watched the second one, and only really because I wanted to see the dockside fight scene at the beginning because a couple of years ago I was a volunteer at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich while they were filming it there. They spent all day turning the exterior of a gleaming, luxurious 17th century queen's house into a grimy Victorian alleyway.

The film was an incoherent mess. It may have been better if i'd seen the first one, but I doubt it. Guy Ritchie is the bane of UK cinema.

Something about the three 90 minute installments, is a good fit for this show. They could probably do with a 4th though. Kick a full season up to 6 hours

Been thinking about the astronomy angle of the Great Game episode. Throughout the episode, it's a running gag that Sherlock pays no mind to astronomy, (Doesn't even know the Earth orbits the sun) & that John blogged about it.

During the episode, Sherlock is challenged to solve mysteries in order to save victims from death. One of the challenges is to prove that a famous painting is a fake. He does so by miraculously recalling having heard about an astronomical event that is in the painting, but not present in the night sky at the time the original painting was created.

Near the end of the episode Watson expects Holmes to concede that some knowledge in astronomy might have solved that mystery sooner, & Sherlock retorts by saying "It didn't help you much"

But ultimately, he should have pointed out to Watson that in reality, the only reason a knowledge of astronomy was needed to solve this mystery was because the adversary (Moriarty in this case) had used this specific mystery as the perfect challenge to outwit Holmes, because he had researched Watson's blog & found that Astronomy was a weakness in Holmes' knowledge base

Hell, Lastrade reads Watson's blog. Why wouldn't it occur to Watson that adversaries might also, & that it might be dangerous to blog about what Holmes doesn't know, as it may be used against them

Holmes never points this out to Watson, initially because he had been hiding the truth that Moriarty was behind it all, & he often leaves John behind when facing Moriarty, but one would hope that at some point after this case Holmes would've point out to Watson that he should be careful what he divulges in his blog. Friends & fans are watching & so are enemies & adversaries.

If he doesn't point it out to Watson, it might be because he wants to protect him from feeling responsible for incurring peril, which could make sense if you think he cares about John enough to want to protect him in that way, & Holmes has accepted the potential repercussions of that choice, so he can insulate his friend

I actually think that would be kind of cool, because the show flirts with the idea that though Sherlock seems unfeeling & inconsiderate of others, he does have feelings, about John, Mrs. Hudson, Irene Adler, & even Molly Hooper, but they are only discernible if you contemplate his behavior like I just did above

it's also clear that this show flirts heavily with the idea that though Sherlock is a self proclaimed "High functioning sociopath", and some of his characteristics can be miscontrued as such, he may in fact be misleading people, finding it better to be treated as a sociopath than what is more likely, someone suffering Aspergers syndrome, or some level of autism

Oh wow, I didn't think of that. But you have a point here.

I really like the apect of Sherlock having feelings but hiding them a lot, I think it becomes rather obvious that he cares a great deal about Watson and also values his opinion. Also Mrs Hudson (I just rewatched a Scandal in Belgravia and when Mrs Hudson gets kidnapped he behaves very caringly towards her and also kind of takes his revenge on the guy who kidnapped her)
Sherlocks relation towards Irene Adler is really interesting I think, I still don't quite know what to make of it. I think he might secretly love the fact that she has outwitted him several times, he does love a challenge.
I think this episodes might be one of my favorites, it's reeally good.

The way Myscroft cares about his brother is pretty interesting as well, he always pretends not to care too much but in reality he really tries to look after him.
We are all stories in the end.

I think the most poignant example of Sherlock feeling empathy for someone is when he asks Molly's forgiveness after he humiliated her over the x-mas gift

It was clear he immediately knew he'd made her feel awful, & was embarrassed by his insensitivity. It seemed somewhat surprising to even Watson that he'd apologized

A sociopath wouldn't react that way. That's why I suspect it's more likely Sherlock suffers Aspergers or some level of autism. I read online that it's suggested that Watson made a subtle remark hinting at Aspergers at some point. I can't find it or figure out what it is though

I think as far as Irere Adler is concerned, it's not just about her being smart enough to outwit him, but it's the same reason he's attracted to his other friends, especially Watson. It's not that they're smart enough to understand what he understands, or even challenge him intellectually, but rather they're in some way capable of understanding HIM, & in that way can relate to him better than most

Case in point, Donovan doesn't understand him at all, & completely misinterprets him. So easy for her to have the wrong idea about him

Oh yes, that was a pretty surprising scene, I liked it a lot. You really could tell that he felt bad about hurting her.

And I agree, I'm pretty sure he's not a sociapath either. Might have been his idea of a joke though, saying that he was.
Oh and I found the scene where Watson hints at Aspergers, it's in The hounds of Baskerville
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8iOr5Hix4QI

I actually think that Irene only becomes interesting to him after she's solved this crime riddle. I think he sees her as an equal in some way. In my opinion his relationship with Irene is really different from his relationship with Watson.

I think he and Watson actually need each other, they kind of saved each other several times. Watson often is taking care of Sherlock and barely ever looses his patience with him even though he's really hard to live with. And I think Watson is so important to Sherlock because he takes him the way he is. In A study in pink there is this scene where Watson talks about how amazing Sherlock's deduction was and I think Watson really starts to grow to Sherlock there because most people have considered him as a freak before and Watson doesn't. And even though he pretends to be kind of annoyed by Watson saying how amazing his deductions are, he secretly loves it. I think that might also be a reason why he doesn't mind Watson blogging about it to much.
I think Sherlock really wants Watson to keep thinking highly of him, But it's true, Watson really understand Sherlock.
We are all stories in the end.

Thanks for that clip. Totally missed that, likely because Baskerville was not my favorite episode. The look on Sherlock's face seems to be a bit displeased too, like... "Did he just say Aspergers? Oh... Those twits are talking about me"

See, I think he calls himself a sociopath because he finds the treatment a sociopath gets (Fear) more preferable to the treatment an autistic person gets (Pity)

Yes, it's clear that each of the people he's let in have a different relationship with him than each other, Watson, Irene, Mrs. Hudson, Molly, Lestrad, & even Mycroft. Each of them are a unique situation

I'll stick with the high functioning sociopath interpretation. Then he's a character whose sense of morality and relationships is almost entirely based on an intellectual foundation. Which makes him the polar opposite of Moriarty, who commits elaborate and pointless crimes because he gets a kick out of it.

Or you could just watch Jeremy Brett's classic 1980s version of Holmes, who combines both traits in a manic-depressive interpretation of the character.

My favorite episode of the series is definitely A Study in Pink, but I think every episode so far has been really amazing.

I also think he has some level of Autism as opposed to sociopathy, at least in this adaption. I'm not overly familiar with the source material. He shows his emotion and hurt in a lot of really subtle ways, which is really a credit to how good of an actor Cumberbatch really is.
