his last day will be feb. 28
the last time a pope resigned was 600 years ago.

I didn't even know it was possible, & as an Atheist, I don't understand. The Pope is IT, right? For them, there's God... & then there's the Pope.

Now there'll be 2? An active "God's #1 on Earth" and an inactive "God's #1 on Earth"?

What if they don't agree? who's right? How do you resign from being God's #1 guy? Did he serve notice to the almighty?

I'm just saying I don't understand is all :alittleham:

In this day & age, this could just be more detrimental to their thang

he probably prayed on the issue, so maybe he did.

and after he retires he's "out of the game" so he'd no longer
have any say in church matters.

The pope isn't "God on earth". He's just the spiritual leader of the Catholic church.

It's just an extremely odd time for him to do this. I'm Catholic, don't throw it around because there are a lot of things I don't like about the Church.....but anyway......right in the middle of Lent, he resigns? Just odd timing if you ask me. I know it's health related, his brother said so, but still, what's a few more weeks?

I read an article today about John Paul II's shoes just being too big for him. According to the article, he's all passion, but can't translate that to effective action. That and his health may be the issue.

He wasn't born as Pope, he doesn't have to die as one.

There were actually two Popes for a long stretch of the middle ages, on in Rome and one in Avignon. They didn't get along.

I blame Yoko Ono.
Once Ixalla was ready, Tathrelle cornered her. “Before we leave for work, I just want to tell you, I’m sorry. I guess I sort of shut down last night. I know you were in pain and I wasn’t too terribly supportive.” There was a wall covering in the main part of their chamber, something that Tathrelle hadn’t noticed before. She stared at it for a second and then shook her head.

Outside, a disembodied voice announced from a hidden speaker, “It is time to travel to all daytime places of employment. Transportation sleighs are available and ready. Citizens are encouraged to thank the sleigh drivers at the end of a successful transport. The government recommends haste, and requests that all pregnant persons be given preference for seating in their designated areas.”

A little distracted, Ixalla just asked, “Pain?”

I honestly cannot believe he did this unless something is about to come out proving beyond all reasonable doubt that either he was a serial rapist of young boys.

Does this even matter to anyone NOT catholic? Has there ever been a new Pope that made such drastic changes so as to make anyone outside of Catholicism even notice or care? Honestly, is there ever going to be a guy come in and say, "Hey guys, lets lay off gay people. God thinks they are OK." or "Contraceptives? Hell yeah." Or how about, "Let's get some more chicks in this gig." or even the most basic "If a child gets molested by one of our priests, we are going Spanish Inquisition on his @$$."? More than likely not so most people don't really care.

Do you actually honestly believe that, or is it a figure of speech

Just more for me to not get at all. Won't ever wrap my head around anything that's going on with that. It's outside all reason in my mind

VIENNA (Reuters) - Austrian Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn's elderly mother hopes he won't become pope because she fears she would never see him and that he would be overwhelmed by Vatican intrigues.

"The whole family is afraid that Christoph will be elected pope," Eleonore Schoenborn, 92, told the Kleine Zeitung newspaper in an interview printed on Tuesday as 115 Roman Catholic cardinals gathered in Rome to pick the new head of the Church.

VATICAN CITY—Today, 115 princes of the church will lock themselves up in the Sistine Chapel to choose a new pope. Tom Rauen is giving conclave watchers a virtual chance to vote, too.

Mr. Rauen has created a game that mimics the single-elimination tournaments made famous by college and professional sports in the U.S.

In this fictional matchup, cardinals are divided into brackets against one another and it is up to the contestant to decide who would make a better pontiff.

People who end up picking correctly win what Mr. Rauen calls a "swag bag" of goodies, such as T-shirts, hats and other odds and ends made by his company.

"We figured having a new pope chosen in the month of March meant someone had to create something like a 'Pope Madness,' " Mr. Rauen said, a riff on the "March Madness" phenomenon in college basketball.

Jewish here - only care that there isn't another Inquisition.

Will this be an Easter sans Pope? Has there ever been one before since, well, since the Crucifixion/Resurrection?
