I grapple to understand why this is a phenomenon... and can't. What can be done to, if not stop someone from losing themselves to their violent insanity, to at least instill in them & all of the most emotionally stunted, psychologically warped, & horrifically incompassionate people in our culture some sense of logic, if not respect for life? Logic, that if you can't stop your self from violence, then just... just kill yourself. Do it now. Don't wait until you've slaughtered scores of helpless random children What will that ever accomplish? Just end your life! or tell me, & I will end it for you. More gun control is not an answer to the social phenomenon, & limiting media exposure is only a marginal remedy, being too little too late. If there is an effect from it, it's already out there We don't need a quick fix. We need a thorough understanding of exactly what happens to a person that leads them to this & we're not getting it. Murder is a state of mind. It's a state of mind that seemingly normal, sane individuals face in war every day, many of whom, in recent times, have suffered from PTSD, because of what they've done or not done I believe that if we can figure out how to help emotionally damaged soldiers of war, when they return & end up wanting to commit suicide, or drown their families in the bathtub, then we may be on our way to helping all emotionally damaged people. Finding a way to take this urge out of them We! Are! Not! Doing! That! Enough! I need to stop thinking about this now & go make a Star Trek fashion poll or something |

It get's me how the USA spend trillions of dollars every year forcing the rest of the world to disarm, yet is seemingly unable to bring this about in their own country !! The expression about getting your own house in order, before interfering in anybody else's, comes to mind !! |

I'm pretty sure nuclear weapons and guns are entirely different things. We have the right to bear arms in the United States because our founding fathers didn't want the government to ever have too much control. The "well-regulated militia" mentioned in the text of the Second Amendment was meant to protect us, the citizens, from the people in power. We fought a war to gain our independence from a controlling government, and the founding fathers didn't want future citizens of the United States to face that ever again. More to the point, banning guns won't do a thing to stop these awful events. This guy didn't even own a gun! He stole them from his mother. Criminals and crazies will always find ways to obtain weapons to hurt other people, and I for one do not want them to be the only ones armed. And to put things in perspective, guns are not the only weapon used for mass attacks. On the same day, a man in Beijing injured over twenty children with a knife. Are we going to ban knives too? I am a law-abiding gun owner, and I will not give up my right to own them because some nut used one to kill a bunch of people. Now can we get back on track and stop talking about this political crap like Wissa asked? |

I've asked that this topic remain unpolitical. I don't want to have to close another thread about a tragic event because of fighting in it. |

This may seem incredibly callous of me, but I think I passed the point of saturation when it comes to this story. |

You know, you're right. I was looking at the problem from the victim's point of view, rather than the gun owners'. The law says that you have a right to bear arms, and of course I respect that !! |

This is why I can't watch tv news anymore. I think I would be a morbidly depressed, upset & irritated person if I still did. e-news is how I find out about things now. At least that way I can choose what I will find is worthy reporting or not. That is lost on tv news now. it's all sensational shit |

My daughter's school had police there this morning and this afternoon. They were extra careful today and her school is state of the art. I was impressed but saddened at the same time that they have to do this. |

Fucking Westboro media starved douchebags. Any funeral in the media is a target, because their philosophy is so broadly shitheaded that any death can be usurped by them, because the "Ill's of a corrupt America" are to blame in "God's" eyes It is the most profoundly idiotic ideology I have ever heard of in all the history of stupidity. It's so stupid that they can use it to not only rally cry about tragic things, but one could even cry about the mundane shit stains in their shorts. "God has damned us all to have shit stains in our shots because America has opened it's arms to the gays!" So ridiculous, I couldn't write it if I'd wanted. It's like standing in a room engulfed in fire & saying the fire chose any particular thing that's burning White Supremacists & freak cult morons need to leave grieving parents of grade schoolers the fuck alone! Fred Phelps is 83 years old. Soon that wretch will be dead, & I would hope a million man march shows up to trample his grave & berate is fucking family The End P.S. Sign onto the fucking Facebook page. ---> Protest Fred Phelp's Funeral |

westboro people are nuts. I almost feel sorry for those people. when they meet God and see all the harm they did... Being a Christian doesnt mean you are faultless of sin.. it means you know you are a sinner and you try to do better.. treat others in a positive light.. that they can see Jesus in your actions. those are not the actions of Jesus. |

I try to avoid it, but then feel guilty. If I watch it I become overly stressed and heartbroken. It's a no win situation for me. Mental health professionals will tell you to limit your exposure to this if it's really affecting you, so I try to remember that, but it's really tough. At the same time, I really wish I had an understanding as to what was going through this guy's mind? What could little children have done to him to warrant this? Was he just looking to do something as cruel as humanly possible? Is it about the attention? I have no theories here. |

Emotional dysfunction. Whatever articles I came across depict him as someone prone to emotional disability, ranging from violent mood swings to a complete absence of feeling at all. |

Right. But what pushed him over the edge to do something like this? I know people with mental illness. The thought of them snapping one day has always frightened me. This just serves to confirm my worst fears. |

I heard that as well. I wonder if he applied for a job and was turned down or something. If so, that would make him mad at the school. But why kill his mom? |

it's a waste of time trying to understand what motivates the mentally ill. Their thought processes aren't normal. If they made sense they wouldn't be mentally ill. |
