The times I had to drive automatics I nearly blew the gearbox trying to change gear. Needless to say, I'll stick with the stick !!

I think it's not just the changing gear, you have to learn how to balance the clutch & accelerator while changing gears. Plus you obviously have to learn the position of each gear so you don't look down when trying to change. I've never driven any other way - here it's the only way you're taught. Eventually you get to the stage that by putting your hand on the gear stick, you know what gear you're in.
