With Adam Driver in line to play the villain in the next “Star Wars,” the next order of business for Disney and Lucasfilm is finding the right Jedi to challenge Driver and the evil empire.

After meeting with several young actors this past year, sources tell Variety that “Downton Abbey” thesp Ed Speleers, “Attack the Block” star John Boyega, Jesse Plemons and theater actors Matthew James Thomas, and Ray Fisher are among the men J.J. Abrams is eyeing for the lead role. Though some insiders warn the search is still ongoing, multiple sources confirm to Variety these actors have moved to the top of the list in recent weeks.

Disney had no comment.

Long ago in a galaxy far, far away — or, more like two years ago when Disney purchased Lucasfilm — Star Wars fans maybe could have guessed that original stars such as Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher would be returning to the universe that George Lucas built.

The Jedi faithful probably weren't prescient enough, however, to predict some of the other arrivals to the ways of the Force: Andy Serkis from The Lord of the Rings movies, Oscar-nominated legend Max von Sydow and Adam Driver, a former Marine best known for his role in the HBO comedy series Girls.

I saw that they just announced the cast the other day. Aside from the original cast, I don't really know any of the others.

I am pleased as punch, to know that Mark, Harrison, and Carrie are going to definitely be in the film. When it comes to SW, yeah, I'm a snob-and, let's face it, for people like me who were fans from the VERY beginning-and I mean, from the minute I left my local theatre, in that wonderful day in 1977, I was hooked-the original trilogy is IT. Comparing the latter one to that, is like hamburger, and fillet mignon. Sorry, George, it just IS.

I think JJ will bring a fan's passion to the directing, and, I am hopeful that this will hold true the level of action, drama, and humor the ANH to ROJ brought us fans. But, big shoes to fill, with the Trio, no question, handing off the franchise to new actors, and chracters. Just wonderful, to see them one more time in their iconic roles. I better live that long!! And, of course I am familair with Max Von Sydow. I can see him as a fit into this world, in whatever role.

Long live SW. May the Force be With Em.

This morning, J.J. Abrams appeared on Good Morning America to announce a new Omaze campaign to benefit UNICEF that will give one lucky Star Wars fan (and a lucky friend) the chance to win a Star Destroyer-sized prize package, one that includes everything from a set visit to a part in the upcoming Star Wars Episode VII. He also gave fans a first look at the one of the film’s new characters, a wizened-looking working-class dude we’ll call Slouchy-Pants.

Two up-and-coming actresses are about to make a trip to a galaxy far, far away as Lucasfilm announced Monday that Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o and Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie are joining the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII.

Nyong’o is coming off a whirlwind 2013 where she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her feature film debut in 12 Years a Slave. She also become a fashion icon, appearing on the cover of People Magazine's “50 Most Beautiful People” issue. But other than a small role in the Liam Neeson action vehicle Non-Stop and an upcoming voice role in the new version of The Jungle Book, Nyong’o had not announced her next major role until now. Nyong’o had been rumored for a role in Episode VII for some time, though she was not included in the original cast list released last month.

Harrison Ford — who injured his ankle today on the set of Star Wars: Episode VII while filming a scene featuring the Millennium Falcon — is used to getting beaten up: After all, the 71-year-old actor got his famous chin-scar after an auto accident in the ‘60s, the result of speedy driving (“A real mundane way of earning it,” he once lamented).

Details of today’s Solo slip-up are scant: All we know is that it involves the ship’s door, which is pretty thick, given all the Mynocks it has to keep out. But it’s hardly Ford’s only on-set incident: “I have been hurt from time to time over 30 years,” he once told a reporter. “And they’re like athletic injuries. They’re not like getting injured by some explosion or getting crunched in a car.” But despite the following accidents, Ford’s never lost his step or showed his age. After all, as Indiana Jones says, it’s not the years — it’s the mileage.

from here

well the millennium falcon is the biggest hunk of junk in the galaxy.
so it stands to reason the doors don't work as they should.

Talk about being thrown for a loop. On Friday, word leaked that director Rian Johnson would take the helm as the writer and director of Star Wars: Episode VIII. Johnson takes the reins from J.J. Abrams, who is already at work on Episode VII, which will continue the story of George Lucas’s saga picking up three decades after the events of Return of the Jedi.

Johnson made his debut with the high-school noir indie Brick, which won a Special Jury Prize at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival. He’s best known for 2012’s time-travel thriller Looper starring Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as different versions of the same futuristic assassin. Johnson has also won an DGA Award for his work directing TV’s Breaking Bad.

Star Wars names are their own kind of art form.

Yeah, they may sound a little like John Travolta announcing people at the Oscars, but that’s their magic. They have the cadence of real names, but they’re like nothing we’ve ever heard.

They also tend to have deeper meaning that pushes subconscious buttons in our heads. Luke Skywalker is an obvious one: The last name is a bit on the nose for a tale about space adventure, but “Luke” also comes from the Latin lucere, which means light (although, remember, the devil started out as Lucifer).

Long before we laid eyes on the face of Kylo Ren, our eyes flickered with the fire of his weapon: that scarlet lightsaber with the distinctive laser crossguard at the hilt and a volatile, sparking blade.

For a long time, it wasn’t even clear who played him until director J.J. Abrams revealed in June what many suspected. The villain of Star Wars: The Force Awakens would be played by Adam Driver, known for his dangerous charm on HBO’s Girls and films such as This Is Where I Leave You and While We’re Young.

We came to learn that he was allied with The First Order, a remnant of the Empire that remains a fearsome threat to the galaxy and its denizens. Above, he is seen flanked by their stormtroopers, striding with intense purpose through the smoldering ruins of a once peaceful village on Jakku.
