The Walt Disney Co. has acquired Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion in cash and stock and announced a new Star Wars movie to be released in 2015.

Kathleen Kennedy, current co-chair of Lucasfilm, will become Lucasfilm's president, reporting to Walt Disney Studios chair Alan Horn as part of the stock and cash transaction. Disney is paying approximately half the price in cash and will issue 40 million shares of stock, the company said Tuesday in a statement.

Kennedy will serve as executive producer on new Star Wars feature films, with the franchise's creator and Lucasfilm founder George Lucas, 68, serving as creative consultant. There are plans to release a new Star Wars film every two or three years.

Honestly, it scares me a little bit. I mean, yeah, the prequels kind of sucked, but they were still set in the same universe with the same style and character types. I just have a hard time imagining anything coming out right without George Lucas involved. And also, the trilogy storie have been set around one character. The originals were about Luke, the prequels about Anakin. So, who would this new trilogy be set around? Luke's kids? Han and Leia's, maybe? Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill are not in any kind of shape to reprise their characters (especially Hamill. Have you seen him lately?! Sheesh!) So would they be recasting these parts? Talk about angering the fanbase! If they make it, I'll probably go watch it, but I don't have high hopes for it.
Ah, Kirk, my old friend. Do you know the Klingon proverb which tells us revenge is a dish that is best served cold? It's very cold.......in spaaaace.

From what I can gather (and don't quote me on this), Lucas will still have some involvement in the new trilogy, due to start in 2015. It's supposed to be a follow-up on Luke and I presume Leia too, though no family has been mentioned as such. So just what it'll be about, I haven't a clue !!

In the books, they went on and made an entire continual universe where they all intertwine and it's really neat. I wish the Star Trek books had done that. Anyway, in the books, Luke starts a new Jedi academy. Han and Leia get married and have twins, Jacen and Jaina, and then another son, whom they name Anakin. Maybe the new trilogy will be about Anakin Solo. lol

The only way to go if they intend to cash in on the franchise in cinemas again, is to make Luke the new Obi Wan... Last of a kind... birth of a new era. You could even put him in seclusion the same way Obi Wan was in the very beginning. Hell, maybe recast Mark Hamill. He's 61 now

The only good thing I think could come of this buyout, is that the new films will be geared toward action, & not miles of pointless, dragged out plot, that put me to sleep halfway through the second film of the latter trilogy

It's already a monumental disappointment, after Lucas' out of touch nonsense. Imho, the only direction they could go is up

A day after THR reported that Michael Arndt has been working with Lucasfilm for several months on a treatment for the new Star Wars movie, Lucasfilm has confirmed that the Toy Story 3 scribe will write the screenplay for Episode VII.
our editor recommends

Arndt had written a 40- to 50-page treatment that will bring the saga of the Skywalkers, the Force-imbued family comprising Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader and twins Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia Organa, to a close in a new trilogy. The story is said to focus on a new generation of heroes and would feature appearances by Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher in older incarnations of their beloved characters from the original Star Wars trilogy.

For all those who hope the upcoming "Star Wars" movies are more "original trilogy" than "prequels" -- there is hope: Harrison Ford, who played the scruffy-looking nerferder Han Solo in the original films, will consider reprising his role, according to Entertainment Weekly.

The magazine spoke to a "highly placed source," who said, "Harrison is open to the idea of doing the movie and he's upbeat about it." The mystery source "close to the just-announced 'Star Wars' sequel" went on to explain that Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) and Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia) are equally enthusiastic about the possibilities.
