'The Simpsons' Facing Cancellation Over Contract Issues With FOX: Report

Despite Homer Simpson's best efforts, it may not be a nuclear meltdown that brings about Springfield's doom. Instead, its end may come thanks to the business of Hollywood that the show has lampooned for so long.

According to a new report from The Daily Beast, the show's voice actors are locked in a bitter contract negotiation with 20th Century Fox, with the studio threatening to end production if the talent does not take a 45% pay cut. The actors are countering with an agreement that nets them a 30% reduction in salary but a small slice of the show's back-end earnings, which include the billion dollar syndication and merchandising empire that the studio has built over the past two plus decades.

At the moment, the Daily Beast reports, the show's voice actors -- Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Nancy Cartwright, Yeardley Smith (Lisa), Hank Azaria and Harry Shearer -- earn about $8 million a year, but do not get a cut of the show's much bigger ancillary profits.

The stars re-upped their contracts in 2008, receiving significant raises; it was reported that they went from $360,000 to $500,000 an episode.

Most of the actors, who each play a number of characters, have other gigs; Azaria, who voices Apu and Chief Wiggums, leads the way with his own NBC sitcom, "Free Agents," though the new show is already in danger of being cancelled thanks to low ratings. He also played a part in this fall's hit film, "Contagion" and starred in this summer's big hit, "The Smurfs."

Castellaneta, the voice of Homer, has had a recurring role in ABC Family's "Greek." Nancy Cartwright, Bart Simpson's voice, also did voices for "Rugrats" and the shows "The Replacements" and "Betsy's Kindergarten Adventures." Harry Shearer has also starred in Christopher Guest's mockumentaries.

you know, I've tried to watch a couple episodes this fall and they have all been awful. I think they may have already outstayed their welcome.

The sad thing is that the show has been bad for a while now, but it isn't the fault of the voice actors. The writing has been worthless

Well, I personally think the show should have been cancelled about 10 seasons ago. It has been going downhill for a long time...

I still chuckle at the show, but it doesn't seem nearly as funny as it did up until several seasons ago. We own the earlier seasons and comparing them to the current seasons is like apples and oranges.

I find it kinda pathetic though that they might cancel it because they don't make a profit on first run episodes. They are making a fortune on reruns and likely will for the next 50 years.

the same thin happened when friends was on.
warner brothers was making at least a billion in
syndication & didn't want to give the actors more money.

I've never really liked The Simpsons. It's just not that funny to me. That being said, when a show has that kind of longevity, it'd be sad to see it go.

To me The Simpsons is funny stuff. From what is being said here I am pretty sure I have only seen the good stuff as I haven't watched it regularly since the '90s. Even the stuff I occasionally catch on TV now is old eps. I have already seen.
Something good will go here soon.

I guess a good way to describe it is that there just aren't any memorable episodes anymore. Like everyone who was a Simpsons fan remembers the episode with Michael Jackson, or when George and Barbara Bush move in across the street. The last handful of seasons have had funny moments, but no episodes that I can really remember.

and the episodes are just bizarre. The last one had Bart obsessed with Rosevelt and dressing up like him. And this weird rant in the middle from superintendent Chalmers about how the school system was geared to girls.

Yes, I totally agree. Family Guy is having the same problem. I loved the show when it was more about Stewie wanting to take over the world, but the last several seasons have had far more shock humor and it really isn't as funny. The Simpsons should go back to its old formula, and Family Guy can just go away.

I love the Simpsons but it came to an end when they started rehashing and undoing the classic episodes like their family saga "The Way We Were", "I Married Marge" , "Lisa's First Word", "And Maggie Makes Three"... I was ticked at the fact that they un-did "I Married Marge" with a shittier version called "That 90's Show". Even the writers are younger than when the show started. I'll miss seeing them on Sunday nights but I have loads of episodes to watch on DVD.. I'm not worried about cancellation.

I heard the voice talent agreed to a 30% pay cut and in return they were renewed for two more seasons.

Way to keep beating a dead horse. :praxius:

Some shows just don't know when to go away.

I feel the same way about "The X Factor/American Idol/America's Got (questionable) Talent" and all the CSI type shows.
