According to this article, The Big Lebowski, Clue, Office Space, Fight Club and Citizen Kane were flops that turned into cult classics.

I've only seen two of the five they've listed. Office Space is my favorite one that is listed. I had no idea that it was a flop movie. Anyways, what are some other films that you enjoyed but they were bombs at the box office?

I seem to recall that It's a wonderful life was a dud at the box office. It did win an academy award for it's snow though.

Rocky Horror Picture Show!
Was that a flop ?? Would have thought it's cult status would guarantee it's success !! However....

The Day After Tomorrow was generally panned by the critics, but was a hit with movie-goers (including us).

Office Space should be adopted as required viewing for all who enter a work life in an office environment.

Fight Club was just awesome, and Citizen Kane was just an amazing piece of grand American Cinema. I particularly also liked Snatch

Office Space was a flop? I guess it's all a matter of perspective. Jennifer Aniston was the only star in it, & hadn't broken into big screen much yet. It was the 1st live action film for director Mike Judge, & it launched him. I'd say for what it was, it was successful, just not a blockbuster. It also had to be pretty cheap to make

Well... let's see

Someone there mentions Spielberg's "1941". I love it, & it flopped big for him. A lot of people there mentioning The Usual Suspects too. I hadn't realized it was a flop, but I love that movie

Hard to imagine that The Usual Suspects was a flop, it won 2 Oscars and was a brilliant movie - it was an instant cult !!

Randomer than you since 1992

Nothing and no one will ever convince me that

- Pearl Harbour
- the 1999 Romeo + Juliet
- Catwoman (the one with Halle Berry)
- 2005 remake of the Producers
- Red Riding Hood

are not made of awesome

There are probably a few others but that's all I can think of at the moment

Edit: Fantastic Mr. Fox might count. I don't know whether it was a box office flop or not, but it probably counts as a cult film. I remember watching it about 4 times in a row at schoolies and we actually rented it twice because we wanted to watch it twice more, and now quotes from it have become something of a meme between my friends and I

One of my favorite movies is Dragon Fly with Kevin Costner. I don't recall whether it was a flop at the movies, but I never heard of it before watching it on HBO one night. I told my friends about it and they also loved it, but had never heard about it.

Yeah, we do too. In fact I watched it twice just to pick up all the nuances, and still called around our friends to find out just who was Kaiser Sosa !!

Once you know, then watch it again, you see it entirely differently. Brilliant !!
