Bert And Ernie Gay Marriage? Sesame Street Says No

Bert and Ernie will not be getting married. To each other, or anyone else.

The demands of a petition calling for Bert and Ernie to get married, which has become an internet sensation in the last few years, has been gently denied by the Sesame Street Workshop, who issued this statement on their Facebook page:

Bert and Ernie are best friends. They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves. Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Muppets™ do), they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation.

This isn't the first time the organization has moved to deny a sexual relationship between their two roommate puppets; in June 2010, a tweet sent from the Sesame Street Twitter account from Bert that said his mohawk was more "mo" than "hawk" was suspected by bloggers to be a sort of coded acknowledgment of their relationship.

Bloggers also took as a hint the large number of gay guest stars from that season, to which Sesame Street responded, "We've always reached out to a variety of actors and athletes and celebrities to appear on the show, and our programming has always appealed to adults as much as children."

lol I disagree with the title of the thread.... its not that they "wont allow" its that the muppet characters dont have sexual orientation...

I dont think Sesame street is ready for that anyway.... and if they were.. it would be better to introduce new characters

 ahhh.. I just got that it was a joke.. my bad!

I think Bert and Ernie are totally gay, but I don't think we're likely to see a marriage anytime soon. Sesame Street hs always been very forward-thinking, but they also have to be able to reach both liberal familes and conservative ones.

There can be only one

Hello No they should not get married and they are not gay.

Bert and Ernie are the original Bro-mance .... followed by Felix Unger and Oscar Madison
The unambiguous and defined essence of a truest friend, is a single soul, shared in two bodies. A person who completes you so, that it pains you when they hurt, and sustains you when they are with you, no matter how far.

 Yeah, really. Especially one in Manhattan. Well, since they've probably lived there since the late 60's/early 70's it's may be rent controlled but still, even a rat infested apartment in Manhattan rents for a pretty penny these days. :mojo:

Now you can't tell me that this isn't a little suspicious:

Now, by the looks of things, short guy there (I've forgotten which is which) Has a bit of a thing going for the taller guy, but tall guy looks like hes about to slap him silly.
I don't think its a two way thing, just a one way thing! :D

Never understood why so much must be read into things like this. It's a couple puppets. There existence on the show is to help facilitate an understanding in young children of the dynamics & facets of friendship. It's a social aid, in entertainment form. I don't recall anything in their actions to suggest a deeper relationship beyond that.

They also resemble comedy partners of the past. The tall thin Straight guy and short fat funny guy. Like Abbot and Costello for example.

However, I always found Sesame Street to be progressive, so I always assumed they were gay and would eventually come out of the closet.

But what your suggesting is really how we as a society should view sexuality, just a part of the entire dynamic of an individual, and not the big definition that is made out of fear and ignorance.

In the HP books Dumbledore is seen as a kindly, wise figure, the greatest wizard of his age. He also happens to be gay. This was not revealed by the author because it's not necessary to make this blatant, because it's an aspect of the person, not the entirety. It only came out when the screenwriters in the film wanted to use a reference to a past love, knowing JK Rowling has extensive backstories for her characters they asked for something to use and her response was "Dumbledore is gay" (this is obvious if you read year 7).

The point is, they may indeed be gay, and so what if they are? Perhaps the greatest example they are setting for the viewers who are able to see the program is that its not harmful in any way for two men to be great friends, and live together.

The real point is that they are puppets created for a children's show, a very young children's show. Reading sexuality into these characters which, unlike something more involved & mature as Harry Potter, is rather disturbing. So I agree with Violet there. I find it hard to believe that whenever they were created, the creator was deliberately developing them as gay, instead of just friends, & comedy partners

Which means that somehow, after the fact, more adult minded people have projected onto these characters their idea of what gay is or the stereotypes they associate with homosexuality, which is rather prejudicial, frankly

It's a silly little parody on what the characters really are imo, & in that way, not all that harmful, but not to be taken seriously either
