Well, it's not so much they didn't like him, or treat him badly. They were just indifferent to him. & even he was indifferent to himself. He's a typical Baby Boomer, head in the clouds, somewhat self centered & slightly immature, but his life had no meaning to him, until this event came along, & the bond between him & his family was so weak & untended, that all it took was for him to get passionate about something else, for it to strain the relationship to the breaking point A lot of odd metaphor in the film, like that. In a way, the aliens were the other woman |

He obviously had an obsessive personality before they came, for it to have so strong an influence on him. His family have obviously seen him acting like this before, to account for their indifference to him, and not seeking professional help. He can't break this obsession - not that he tries - and so by getting on the ship at the end is his way of totally giving-in to it !! The again, the movie has a finite length to it, so some aspects would have to be glossed over or ignored altogether, in order to tell the story !! |

It's important to mention that his story is not the only one in the film. There's the single mom who had her little boy abducted, & the French scientist, who is investigating the encounters, & eventually the people who were witness to it, which are shown to all be influenced in an obsessive way by the alien encounter, by painting, drawing or sculpting the visitation site at the end of the film, & even some of them fighting the odds to get past blockades, in order to be there. Roy Neary (Dreyfuss) is one of only two civilian UFO witnesses to make it all the way there Now, as for the scenes with Roy's family. I wouldn't necessarily say he was chronically obsessive. There really is only one scene of him with his family, prior to the alien encounter. In that scene, he's not really obsessive or compulsive as he'd later become. What he is, is removed. His wife speaks to him half a dozen times & he doesn't even hear her, while he fiddles with a toy train set. His kid needs help with math problems, & the effort he expends is very minimal, & comedic in nature. The wife mentions a promise he'd made to taking them all out on the weekend, & he ends up being bothered that they wanted to play mini golf instead of seeing the movie he'd wanted them to see, Pinocchio The frustration of his family, by the fact that this alien obsession is drawing him away from them, was compounded because they interpreted it as more of what he'd already been doing, growing distant from them. His primary characteristic in the original status quo was that he was numb in his life, & the family was struggling because of it. The alien encounter sparked his imagination & passion, & he goes through a process of completely departing from his family over the next several scenes, long before he ever abandons them This is why I called the alien encounter "The other woman" The metaphor of it is very similar to the occurrences of how & why men cheat or abandon their families in general. They were bored & numb in their life, & found passion in something or someone else His real flaw is being selfish, long before the alien encounter, & somehow this movie gives him at out for that loss of passion in his life that he could not find in the family he has. It makes me suspect that Spielberg was glamorizing the selfishness of his generation, by rewarding him with a ticket out of his mundane & numb existence Have I mentioned that I am 6 months older than the abducted boy in Close Encounters & 2 months younger than Elliot, in E.T. & that my dad is the same age as Spielberg? That family of his is just like many families I saw when I was a kid, including my own at times, & at times, the depictions of how it's all impacting the kids in this film is brutal |

Kids movies have been doing that for ages, from The Little Rascals to The Goonies However, I will say that it was much more seriously done in E.T. The effect was even regretted by Spielberg who ended up digitally removing all the adult's guns & replacing them with flashlights & such |

Fred Willard was arrested last night in an "adult" theatre for publicly masturbating. http://www.tmz.com/2012/07/19/fred-willard-lewd-conduct-arrest-adult-theater-interview/ seriously? adult movie theatres still exist? have these people not heard of the internet? |

Of course they have. Have you not heard of exhibitionism? I'm thinking anybody who is jacking it in public is getting off on jacking it in public more than anything else. In fact, at this point, I'd assume adult theaters should only exist for that purpose now |

On my old topic. Why don't we have any more nice guy alien visitor movies? Someone needs to find a way to do it right at least one more time. How much more alien invasions can we really watch? |

In movie theatres the girls come around (or used to) with trays of ice cream, popcorn and drinks. Just wondering what their trays would contain in porn theatres............?! |

*snicker* Aww how innocent. Yes, there are still quite a few of them. Van has a few. It's all about the atmosphere. Usually, they are places for hooking up. And if there isn't a full blown cinema there are individual "booths" that are often conected by a hole called a "glory hole". Use your imgagination. When we lived in Oregon, we had two prominent adult shops. One had a strip club attached to it and in the back of the book store they had the booths and some of them were individual and others were larger. The other shop in had several "couples" booths and one "party room". Of course this is the state where they ruled in their supreme court that the act of public sex is protected free speech. Don't ask the obvious question. Anyhow, I guess Willard will become the new Paul Ruben. What I don't understand is why people care so much or why such a thing is illeagal in a porn shop of all places. 2nd attempt at posting. Posted last night but reported it instead. lol |

One of the most ridiculous and overly used *things* in the movies, is people cutting their hands with huge knives to draw a drop or two blood, and like it's no more difficult than popping a zit. Have these people ever tried cutting themselvs? It hurts! And using the hand after is near impossible. Why not just prick yourself with a blook sugar machine or sewing needle or something...on the forearm where it hurts much less? *I say things because I lack the knowledge of the proper term. |
