Some things never change. Back in the day, during Star Trek: Voyager’s seven years on the air, Garrett Wang always told it like it was. If a storyline clicked, if he was having fun, if something struck his fancy, he’d say so, loud and clear. Likewise, if something frustrated him, say a lack of development for his character, Ensign Harry Kim, Wang spoke out. All these years later, it’s the same way. At conventions, fans love and appreciate Wang’s candor when he talks about his Trek experience and his energy when he emcees various events. And it was no different when StarTrek.com caught up with him for a comprehensive two-part interview in which he reflected upon his Voyager journeys

I'm not trying to be negative here; just saying it like it is. During the fourth season, I called writer/producer Brannon Braga and asked him why my character hadn't received a promotion yet. His response? “Well, somebody's gotta be the ensign.” Geez, thanks. Thanks for nothing. At some point, I even approached Kate Mulgrew and frustratedly asked her why I wasn't promoted yet. In hindsight, this action on my part was hilarious because Kate Mulgrew had no more influence in promoting my character than a random person on the street. I would like to take the time to say that I had no influence on these Kim developments.

I agree about not promoting him and the argument about someone needing to be the Ensign is a bit dumb..... maybe they should have tossed into the story that Seven got given the rank of Ensign like what Picard did with Crusher..... and then bumb Kim to Lt.

But I guess that would have been too simple, and then they'd also have to put Seven in an actual uniform and not a Troi Cat Suit.

He makes a lot of good points at the faults of the show. Rick B. did a great job with DS9 and while working on TNG, but I always felt there was something wrong, something missing with Voyager..... it just didn't grab me like the other two shows, it just wasn't really well thought out.... it paled in comparison to the other two.

If I was running Star Trek: Voyager, what I would have done is keep the first hour exactly the way it was and, the second hour, I would have taken the same kind of pacing as the first hour and then ended it with a caption on screen saying, “To be continued at a theater near you.” Then I would have done a two-hour feature film. That would have been the way I would have done it.

I don't think that would have been a good idea. I agree with his view on how it ended so quickly, but that's not how I would have gone to improve it. Make it a three-part episode, don't "Blue Ball" the viewers into waiting a few more months or years before the story finally closes by making a movie.

I always liked these kind of interviews. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, I understand his frustration with regards to not being promoted. I often asked myself why it hadn't happened until I saw him talk about it. The thing is, I think it may have gotten personal between him and Rick Berman. I remember that in the episode in which Tom Paris is restored back to a Lt., Kim asks why he hasn't been promoted. Now, why would writers include such a comment in a script?

it could've been because they were getting
that question from the fans. :idon'tknow:

But I guess that would have been too simple, and then they'd also have to put Seven in an actual uniform and not a Troi Cat Suit.

As much as I enjoy ogling attractive females, I never supported the catsuit uniforms as presented by Troi, Seven and T'Pol. Starfleet is for all intents a military organization. Yes, nominally its charter is defense and exploration but the military heirarchy is one reason I view it as nothing more than a military organization.

Had all females been given the same uniform (as in TOS where men wore slacks and women wore skirts), there would not have been an issue. But to see Troi in one outfit, while Ensign Ro, Doctors Crusher and Pulaski and Lieutenant Gomez wear regulation uniforms baffles me. The same goes with Seven, as a member of the Voyager crew she should have had a Starfleet uniform, just as those worn by the female Maquis crew. Finally, T'Pol's uniforms after she officially left the Vulcan High Command should have matched those of the other female crew, such as Crewman Cutler and Ensign Sato. (On a side note, I didn't think a Vulcan would have been vain enough to invest in implants.)

I understand it was a ploy for ratings, Starfleet uniforms don't accentuate cleavage. I still think the producers should have accepted that most people watching Star Trek enjoy it for the sci-fi and drama, not just for a sexual tease.

I thought 7's cat suit was to help her skin reform after the implants were removed or something.

I actually thought Seven and T'Pol were two of the more interesting characters in their respective series, but they are far too easy to dismiss because of the way they were superficially presented.
