so my brother is having an argument on one of the bboards he goes to with a guy from new zealand.

this guy says that anything put on a hamburger bun becomes a "burger." fish, chicken, etc.
my brother says that the only burgers are hamburgers & anything else on a burger bun is a sandwich.

what say you?

I think anything that is patty formed and meant to be eaten on a bun is a burger. Ground fish that is formed into a patty = burger, but a fish fillet on a bun = not burger.

...........................

The unwritten rule would seem to be that anything which attempts to be hamburger-like is a burger, meaning there is a patty of ground meat or meat-like substance being used, like a soy burger, or turkey burger. However, placing things like a piece of chicken or fish onto a hamburger bun is a sandwich

I suspect that strictly speaking a hamburger is a very specific thing. But as long as the EU doesn't declare it a foodstuff of Protected Origin (like champagne or stilton cheese) people can apply the name to whatever they like

Live long and prosper.....!!

I often buy frozen chicken burgers from the supermarket, as well as fish burgers and hamburgers, so really I don't think it matters. If you like the taste of it, call it what you like !!

I would say a hamburger, or veggie burger.

Usually with chicken, it's a chicken pattie.

And the buns, packaged anyway, are called Hamburger buns.

We call them baps, which is a tremendously satisfying word

I think the meat being shaped into a round patty is a key point in the burger definition

This. Ground something, anything, shaped into a patty (round or square). Bun isn't even necessary (I refer you to the Atkins craze of 2004).
