so another member of the teen mom cast has been charged with assault based on video footage. I'm not sure if this incident was actually footage shot from the show or just random video footage put online

http://content.usatoday.com/communities/entertainment/post/2011/03/teen-mom-2-stars-arrested-for-fighting-/1

For me this brings up two questions

is reality tv really so "real" that the people involved should be charged with stuff that happens on the show? or does it make as much sense as charging someone on star trek for illegal time travel?

and, are these girls being held to a differen standard because they are mothers? why aren't the people from Jersey shore being charged for hitting each other? why aren't those people on talk shows being charged for hitting each other with chairs?

I think overall we've just become an overly sensitive society. Anything and everything is deemed offensive to somebody these days, and we look for the slightest opportunity to demand "justice" or cash in on it. The slightest provocation means we have to take you to court.

And it's not just reality tv; this has spilled over into sports as well. In a recent Boston Bruins-Montreal Canadiens game, one of the Montreal players was severely injured by a body check from a Boston player, so the Montreal police department opened up a criminal investigation. Should we be policing sporting events as well? It's all just become too much.

Thats only because we've become a very litigious society.....everybody looking for a payday of some sort and will sue anyone for anything for something as ridiculous as even looking at them the wrong or farting in their direction. I despise what we have become and people should have enough balls to take someone calling them as asshole without getting all pissy and crying about it.

It used to be that you got in a fight, and you lost....well you lost, and you have to deal with that.
Today someone even touches by accident, and you're up for rape charges and getting investigated into your past for any possible prior abuse issues.

First, I don't watch Teen Mom, so don't take my knowledge of events as facts... I just read a lot of entertainment news.

The first assault on camera should definitely have resulted in charges- it happened in front of a child, by the child's primary caregiver against a person who I'm not even sure was getting paid much or anything to be an "actor" on the show.

If either of the events were scripted, they were badly done.

And regarding sports injuries, I recall there being a time when if someone was badly injured it was just an "oops"; no one was charged and no one was sued. It's semi-expected that in brutal sports, someone will be injured.

so crimes should be prosecuted based on who witnesses them?

not necessarily disagreeing with you, just think that is an interesting perspective

I would say exposing a small child to an assault by their legal guardian is a form of child abuse, and could cause fear through intimidation.

It should be up to the actual assault victim whether or not to press assault charges.

these children should be paid for appearing on these shows just like the parents.

But do you really think the parents would be responsible with the money the infants and toddler would be recieving? If they're anything like how they are on the show, they would have to start trusts for them.

And even if the kids were getting paid, it doesn't change the fact that they're being exposed to actual violence. At least when actor children are being filmed for television and movies, a lot of coordination is made so they aren't exposed to anything too frightening... I doubt anything like that is done for "reality" tv.

I think it is now legislated how much of a child's earnings have to be put away for them. In a situation like this where the parent is part of the "act" I think all the money the child makes should be put in a trust. And child labour restrictions need to be put in place to limit the number of hours a day the child has a camera in their face.

I'm still uncomfortable with the idea that something filmed for a tv show can be used to prosecute a crime. There needs to be outside evidence as well. I don't think we or the courts know how much of the behaviour being filmed is dictated or scripted by the producers. And I'm also disturbed by the fact that women with children are the only ones being charged when we know women and men are doing the same think in other shows with no repercussions.
