At the end of "The Killing Game" Janeway gives the Hirogen hunters holotechnology to get them to hunt without hurting organics, which comes back to haunt her in "Flesh and Blood" when the holograms go through with an insurrection. Was it wise to give the Hirogen the technology in the first place? |

I thought Flesh and Blood was a great 2-parter, so in retrospect, Im glad she gave them holotech otherwise we would have missed out. |

This one was a little absurd even for me, you'd think Voyager would be long clear of the area before the Hirogen had a chance to implement the tech to the point you had a mass 3D breakout...

Around 3 years ago when I was unemployed they showed multiple eps (in order) on a cable channel, USA or Spike or one of those, every day. Within 3 months I'd seen the entire series, beginning to end, some eps multiple times. I enjoyed many facets of VOY, although there were also times I wanted to throw my cocktail glass through the teevee screen. Janeway, really? Giving the Hirogen the tech was one the But overall, enjoyed Voyager... |

So, are you asking this from a prime directive point of view or from an entertainment point of view? She definitely broke the prime directive and should not have given the holotechnology away, but what a great way of illustrating how a decision can come back to bite you in the behind! The good thing about Flesh and Blood is that Janeway gets to take responsibility for that decision, and that was good story telling. |

At the time, yes. The goal was to save lives. First the Hirogen themselves. Hunting holographic prey posed no risk for casualties due to retaliation or self defense from the hunted. Secondly it spared numerous other lives by preventing those who would eventually be identified as prey from becoming trophy's. Finally it had the immediate effect of saving the Voyager crew. In hindsight it had consequences. The idea of enhancing holograms so they can feel fear, pain and suffering was probably never conjured up by Janeway. Nor was the sentience they eventually obtained, in essence a new race was created just for the slaughter. Several similar regrets have been made throughout history. The scientists who successfully split the atom or created dynamite for example, didn't turn those inventions over for the purpose of killing others. But that was the sad unforeseen consequence that accompanies so many other things that are created and shared for the purpose of saving lives. |

I think it was a good idea. It saved lives. But at the same time, it could also give them the avenue to get more "physical"...learning more and practicing more. I guess we will never know, but I still think it was a good idea. |

I would say as far as interfering with a culture, that was a grey area here. But definite no no for sharing technology. |
