**Tomahawk Chop**
|
It's the one where the Doctor finds out that his memory has been deleted due to an event involving the death of Ensign Jetal and the aftermath involving the way the Doctor dealt with the loss of a patient. He almost self-destructs. So, Janeway and crew has those memory engrams deleted. Easy breezy, until a year and half later the memories resurface and the Doctor has to face the trauma of the event all over again. If the doctor was a flesh and blood crew member, they would of found ways to support him through this episodes of PTSD. Why couldn't they just do that before?? By that time they were aware that the Doctor wanted to become more than his programming. I watched that episode tonight and those are just my thoughts. |

Yeah, not an easy ep to watch, and I too was left wondering pretty much the same things. I thought Janeway's solution was admirable, to acknowledge his value as a member of the crew by giving him time to come to terms with the problem, and by being there for him when he needs a friend. |

because no one else can do his job for him maybe? If he did self destruct what would they do? Most other jobs on the ship can be filled by more than one person. |

On one hand ... he is a program, and if the program cant handle those files... they must be deleted. I would assume.. when they get back to the alpha quad. He could be upgraded to handle such things. On the other hand... its not fair to control a person like that.. he should have to deal with it and grow from it. but we end up going back to the first hand. Its interesting to me, that frontier life makes you do things that you wouldn't normally do.. kinda like Archer before the prime directive. |

That was the problem Io, While trying to become more than the sum of his subroutines, he wasnt able to cope. |

that's what i was thinking. if he had that much trouble working through the guilt before, it probably interfered with his work |

What I don't get is how he got over it. They didn't really show that. Did they end up having to delete the files again or did he find some way to cope the second time around? That doesn't really make sense because one would assume if he couldn't hget over it the first time it means his program is incapable of letting him, but if they had to delete t his memory again,t hen the episode was kinda pointless. |

They were deleting his memory again, but he got wise to it the second time around, and is what was leading to his psychosis, and it was decided to stop and try to help him work it out rather than just surreptitiously treat it like a machine with an off button, which essentially didnt work out as they had planned |

Yes, I seem to remember that they left the episode unresolved, as a kind of 'what would you do' to the viewers. |
