He was always all about protecting his family (both real and on the force) Now he has no family at all, he can't be a force for good which he always was able to convince himself he was, and he can't be the local glamorous touch guy. In jail he still could have been all those things. He would have been happier there. And there would have been a chance for him to reconnect with his kids that way. Love the way they left all the characters. And love the pathos of the Shane story. After years of hating him and his wife you could really feel thier pain and desperation.
