Food Network star/producer Marc Summers is grateful to be alive after sustaining serious facial injuries during a car accident last week.

The 60-year-old star, who currently hosts The Food Network's "Unwrapped," was a passenger in a taxi cab in Philadelphia when the vehicle hydroplaned during a "torrential downpour," Summers told People.

"I knew when [the driver] lost control that I was in trouble. I was on the phone with my supervising producer and I said, 'Oh my God, we're going to crash!'" he told the mag, recalling the harrowing moments right before the wreck. "Next thing I knew, I woke up and had blood all over me."

Summers' head slammed against the plastic partition between the cab's front and backseats upon impact, badly damaging his face.

In the UK it's the law to wear one, front or back seat, private car or taxi !!

Seatbelt laws are for front & back seat in the U.S. too. I just rarely ever hear of anyone using one in a cab, for which it would certainly still apply but is not enforced, & this would be a prime example of why wearing one is necessary. Any time I'm in a car with another driver, I wear a seatbelt. I don't trust other drivers... any of them

Oddly though, I don't believe in seat belt laws. I believe people should wear them, but I don't believe in the law. The government has no place forcing people to do things solely for the purpose of it being for their own good. People smoke & drink & fight professionally. These are all things which are a danger to us but are not prohibited by law. As a free person in a free land, I expect that if endangering myself in some ways is legal, then all self endangerment should be. It's my life. I'll do wtf I want with it

The law makes no sense anyway, since people can license themselves to drive free seated on a motorcycle, which is a much greater risk to a person's safety than driving a covered vehicle without a seat belt

Hey I hear ya bro, and you'd be surprised just how diligent the cops are at enforcing that seatbelt law. They figure anybody NOT wearing a belt, must have other offences just waiting to be discovered (no MOT or insurance, for example) and so are worth a 'pull over' !!

Taxi drivers have a strange quirk of the law - when running empty, they must wear a seatbelt, but when carrying passengers they are allowed to not wear it. Hey, I dunno, UK law, go figure !! :idon'tknow:

That poor man! I also heard that his one of his hands was also injured. I sure hope that it wasn't injured too bad...he is the drummer in his wife, Wynona Judd's band....

I'm so sorry to hear that his leg had to be amputated. Poor guy!

The only thing I can say about his career is that there is always hope.

Look at Rick Allen from Def Leppard, still drumming after losing his arm YEARS ago. It can be done if he so chooses, he just needs time to heal first emotionally and physically.

Agreed. Disability can be overcome with the right frame of mind - the Paralympics that are soon to start, for example !!

Sometimes I feel bad for that little girl. She just has no clue, does she? Then again I'm probably just being sucked in by the innocent little young Meg Ryan face she has. For all I know she could be the worst whore of Babylon there ever was

I'm thinking closer to the second.

but that's harsh, I don't think there is anything wrong with being the whore of babylon. I've actually always liked her because she never followed the britney spears boytoy model.

I guess that's fair. I always hated Spears. Lavigne not as much. It would be novel if it had anything to do with their music, but it doesn't because I can't stand either
