Kind of dull, & Shane is getting on my nerves now. I'm thinking this gun training for little Carl is going to literally backfire on Shane, when he finally goes head to head with Rick. I think the kid will shoot Shane down

BTW, if you have a child & pregnant wife the last place you should be thinking of heading is west to Fort Benning which is likely a dead frenzy, & there is nothing safe about remaining at this ranch, or any ranch, with the impending disaster of a swarm of walkers, coming down on you. Millions of people lived in these cities in the area. Those masses of geeks will be spreading out. Hershel is not in the right frame of mind for a post-apocalypse. He's thinking Biblical, & the roadies need to gtfo of there, pronto

I know exactly where they SHOULD be going. It's called Cumberland Island, off the southern most coast of Georgia. The only way to get to it is by boat. It's like a tourist spot, & has some small lakes, & big long beach. There's even some buildings on it, & never any more than like 300 people allowed on it. Once you hijacked a boat to it, you could live like frontier people, periodically running mainland raids for medical supplies & such, while conducting roving patrols to eliminate any & all walkers from it. You won't need hardly any gas vehicles, because it's really only 6 miles wide at its widest & like less than 20 miles long. There's deer & boar, for hunting, & land to grow food on. Hell, I've heard there's even wild horses living there. A new home, free from zombie invasion
Sounds like that sub-plot in I Am Legend where Anna and the boy were surviving evacuees off the Red Cross Ship.

Yeah, & over time you could construct a transmitter, to try to reach other survivors, & send out broadcasts like Will Smith was doing in that movie

The irony of it all.

Not as big a finale I was hoping for, I really want them to leave the farm, but I'm enjoying the delving into all the characters. Even as Shane unravels.

so more thoughts.

Dale, what the hell was he thinking? I used to have more sympathy for him but now I just think he's nuts. almost pathological need to get into other people's business and then to make stupid decisions.

Lori, really don't like this character. I've never warmed up to the actress in anything I've seen her in so I may be biased. But I just think she is really miscast in this series. She should be playing the Andrea character and the Andrea actress this role. Being set where it is and the two men being so obviously southern I just think this character should be more southern bell. Tough but still really feminine. She is just not pulling that off and I'm not buying her as the base of a love triangle.

and her constant whining about Rick being the leader and no one else has a right to make a decision is just weird. When was it decided that Rick was the leader? Sure he takes a leading role a lot of the time, but I don't recall the rest of the group giving up their free will to him in some sort of stone age chief type pact.

Love the way Glen is coming into his own. And love the girlfriend. Hope she stays around.

I'm loving the character of Shane and watching him de-volve. I hope they don't make him un redeemable. Now I wouldn't want to hang out with him, but I think he's a really interesting character. And I think he's right. Rick and Dale will get them all killed by not adapting to what is really around them. Love the insight into him when he says he doesn't need to be jelous of rick because Rick will be dead soon enough by his own actions. Interesting as well when Lori said that even if the baby was shane's it never would be.

got the first season on dvd for christmas so I finally watched the first two episodes for the first time. I can see the philosophical differences between Shane and Rick playing out from the begining. And I can't believe how many of the group they have lost already. They need to find some new people and stop dying off so fast or humans don't have a chance.

Have to say I hate lori even more. I can't believe the way she brushed Shane off once Rick got back. She could have ended it without being so cruel about it.

I can't believe the way she brushed Shane off once Rick got back. She could have ended it without being so cruel about it.
She treats him like dirt, because he lied about Rick being dead. The "You told me my child's father was dead" grudge has stuck permanently, & it's gotten worse since everyone has begun to see what kind of man he is. Even though I don't care much for her, because she's wishy-washy, that grudge is fairly legitimate. He should have told her the truth

Here's the problem with Rick & Shane. They're the opposite of one another. Shane thinks Rick isn't cut out for life in Zombie world because he's too attached to people, & Rick is thinking Shane is not attached to other people enough

In my opinion Rick is right... philosophically, but Shane is very often right about cold hard reality. One can be in the right, & still make poor decisions, & one can be in the wrong, & still be correct about things. It is still the land of the living, so long as people are alive on it. The most ruthless & unstoppable enemy that ever existed is out there, so you are following combat rules now, but that doesn't change how you behave with the other souls that you are amongst

Rick is allegiant, & Shane is renegade. Rick won't leave a man behind if he has any choice in it, & Shane will cut anyone loose if it is a threat to him or those he cares about, to do otherwise. Shane leaves Otis for dead, because they might have both died otherwise, & had that happened, Carl would have died too. Otis was more expendable than Carl. That's a dangerous mindset to always be in, because sometimes it stops him from doing the right thing

Sure Sofia had been infected, or could have been dead, but you still keep looking. You don't abandon the people who you have allegiance with. To do so sacrifices all your humanity. Why would anyone want to stay with a group of people, if they know that they'll be abandoned if the shit gets a little thick?

of course shane told her he was dead. It is a freaking miracle he made it. And even a bigger miracle that he found his family. If he had told lori anything else her and carl would be dead because they would have tried to get to him. They definatly have a different view on how to survive but I don't think either of them is wrong. To shane loi and carl are his family and he will protect them above all others. I don't think that is wrong. But then rick isn't wrong either. Right now they have to make some harsh decisions. They are surviving this long on luck and until they can find someplace safe they can hunker down they will have to make some hard decisions.

I think that even though Shane was proved right about Sofia, he was wrong about abandoning the search as a point of protocol. you just don't do that if you want to be part of a group that can depend on one another

& even though Rick is in the right on their philosophy, he often makes really bad choices, like kowtowing to Hershel. I'm not even sold on how safe that farm is anyhow

and taking off to look for merl with half the men. Remember Shane blamed him that they lost so many people in the attack on camp. Or insisting they go to cdc instead of the military base. Shane was convinced that was the wrong decision and he was right.

Rick took over the the entire group and led them into what shane was sure was dangerous about 3 days after waking up from a coma. He shouldn't have been leading anything.

Shane may have been telling Rick they should abandon the search but he was still looking for her. I don't recall her openly anouncing to everyone that they should abandon it.

when you watch it like this you get a sense of how fast it is all happening

day 1

day 2
Rick goes to atlanta meets glen and group. Returns to camp

day3
they go back to atlanta to look for merle. Come back to camp and it is being overrun with walkers

day4

day 5
break camp and head out, get to cdc that night

day 6
cdc blows up

season premiere rick says they lost another member of their group the day before last.

day 8
hit traffic jam, herd passes through, lose sophia

day 9
begin search again, carl gets shot, head to farm, Shane shoots otis

day 10
zombie in the well, glen and farmers daughter head to town, daryl looks for sophia alone, lori is pregnant

rick says this is the 3rd day the girl is missing.

missing the next episdoe
but I think it's one more day
shane and andrea do the nasty and andrea discovers her inner klingon, dale tells hershel that they know about the barn, lori tells rick she's pregnant and about her and shane, maggie and glen go to town to get morning after pills and maggie tells glen they treat him like walker bait

day 12
