inspired by this post & poll at dreamwidth.

When I was 10 and our washing machine exploded, turning our house into something more waterpark than domicile, my parents knew exactly what to do; they totally efficiently turned off the water, called the water company, and called the insurance people. All I could think of was to hold up my pants, which didn't want to stay on anymore once they'd taken on 40 pounds of water weight. I thought, I cannot wait until I am grown up and I know what to do.

When I was 17, I got my first flat tire, and of course I panicked and drove home on the rim. My father laughed and put on my spare tire and took my car out for a new tire, and then he explained why we don't drive on a flat. And I listened and looked forward to the day when I knew this stuff, when I just knew what to do.

When I was 25, Best Beloved and I bought our first house. I sat in the escrow office reading a stack of documents that I needed a ladder to get to the top of and thinking, Surely they will not let me actually buy part of this house. Surely they will notice I don't know what to do.

When I was 35, I sat in a wheelchair (despite my extremely reasonable protests) and carried a tiny baby home in my lap, and I couldn't believe it: they were letting me leave the hospital with the most important person in the world, and I still didn't know what to do.

Responsible adulthood did not happen to me. I never found a copy of the manual called What to Do. Instead, I have cobbled together a set of coping skills that let me fake being a responsible adult most of the time, while I stare in wonderment at the people around me who actually seem not only to have the manual but also to have read it and learned it to the point where they don't even need it anymore. And yet they never want to sell their old copy.

So, you know, now I'm wondering: how many of you know What to Do?

so are you an adult or just faking it?
do you clean ALL the things or just some?
how organized are you?
cook 3 nutritious meals a day or just make sandwiches?
are you fiscal responsible?
All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.--Abraham Lincoln

Probably not, but I'm not holding onto any illusions that previous generations were any better equipped or possessed more potential to better handle the random oddities of existence than we are, or I am. We just had the luxury then, of seeing them & the world, through the rose colored glasses of childhood. They certainly had their trial & error stages too, before they became the Rock of Gibraltar that we see them as

If life has taught me anything, it's that we're all flying by the seat of our pants, & some of us are pretending that isn't the case, to save face, & that's the way it's always been. Those people usually get elected to something, if they're any good at it

Having said that, I suspect we all have our strengths & weaknesses. I personally am lost with escrow, & finances or the like. I'm thrifty with a buck, but that's about the best I can claim. However, I am a clinch player, when it comes to emergencies. I've always had a knack for sizing up the given elements to a crisis, especially a health one. The trick is to not panic, & if you get scared, then ok be scared. Then stop being scared & do what needs to be done, or get to figuring that out.

Surely adults aren't always prepared for what might come. Other adults make fortunes off the fact that there are those of us who aren't, & over the years, I've gotten a clearer picture of the reality of my parents & other elders, who may have looked more steady than they actually were

At the end of the day, I just try to not be a stoop or a sucker... At the beginning of them too B)

I call my mom, aunt, Significant other, and brother for all the important things. LOL

I am definitely not an adult. Half way there.. maybe...
there are somethings I know what to do.. and others I am completely lost.

I can turn off the water and fix the toilet.. and most other handy things...unless its the car
I cant do anything to my truck short of putting gas in it...
If I wound myself.. Im calling someone else.
All my posts are done from my tablet. I apologize for all strange errors in my posts... as swype hates me. :violet:

Like most I am a mixed bag. I do think most of us can rise to the occasion when necessary though.
