:( WTF! When will this shit end? I hope this mud & concrete deal they have planned works, or we could be looking at the worst ocean oil spill in history, topping that one, back in '79. That one took like a year to get it capped :afraid:

I can't even get a solid estimate of tonnage being dumped per day. I guess the worst case could be like 8 million gallons a day

Live long and prosper.....!!

Ok now, if I remember my school physics lessons (like 40-odd years ago), oil floats on water.

So, scoop up the leaking oil, drain off the water, send oil to refinery, no ??

They could be getting on with that, while they figure out how to cap it.

The ocean churns the water. That's got to make it worse right? :idon'tknow:

Yeah, sure hay and straw would work, but there's like several million gallons of oil floating around out there. How much hay/straw would it need to clean THAT up ?? :/ Nice idea, though.

It's not a refined oil. It's crude with lots of "junk" in it. Essentially the oil has emulsified with the water and doesn't float on top. That's part of the reason why they haven't burned it off yet. The oil can be found up to 40 feet deep. There simply is no way to dredge all of that. They can dredge, and are dredging some, but there is just too much and too deep to dredge it all.

Here's some live feed.

At work we've been writing "notes of support" to Tony Hayward, the BP CEO.

Hard to say what my feelings on this are. On one hand, BP presents a pretty serious, almost fanatical, safety awareness program. We have something called WYE (what's you're expsosure) augmented by a very strict environmental program (to the point where if someone's car is leaking oil in the public parking lot, we have to run and get pads to soak it up).

On the other hand, the contractors on site have a much better OSHA ratio than the actual BP operators who have twice the incidents we do.

There are tar balls showing up in The Florida Keys... but BP is trying to say they arent from there spill...

Nothing has shown up here in Tampa yet.... but you can Vacation here real cheep right now.. cause people think there is oil on the shores of FL.. but not yet.

This is so depressing... I cant believe that they dont have any decent ways to cap this thing off... the technology for fixing spills hasnt changed one bit since the last one...
It will be August before they can drill a new line to relieve the pressure... :crying:

Actually, if you catch it early, you can burn it off. The problem is, America has only one fire bloom and the White House refused to authorize its use. It's still anchored in Illinois. BP tried to rent some from central america, but it was too late by then.

The bottom line is, we have a government for a reason, and for whatever reason, it's just refusing to help right now. The public is starting to catch up to that, though - Blame is being shifted on the White House. The early prediction of this being Obama's Katrina seem to be panning out.

That may be better in the long run. Keep it from concentrating on one small area and it will be broken down and dispersed much more quickly.

One would think any way. Snarky comment deleted.

on the plus side.. they said it would probably make it harder for Hurricanes to gain any speed in the gulf...

but then again.. a hurricane will churn in up really good.. makeing it harder to clean up.

With respect, the last thing you want is the oil spill getting caught up by the Global Conveyor. Sure it'll get dispersed, all over the world, and kill a huge amount of marine life - and the humans who eat them - not to mention the damage to beaches etc !!

By keeping it confined in the Gulf, keeps it where the damage has already been done - continues to be done - and where the authorities (or whoever) can plan it's clean-up.

So, local problem, or global tragedy ??

That would depend on how much was actually spilled. From my understanding, the crude breaks down in the short term and the hydrocarbons are not persistent in nature. The concentration is what is the problem. Nature can take care of the problem easier if it's less concentrated, which would be the case if it gets into the different currents and dispersed around the world.

I'm sure the impact would be negative, however, it's a lesser of two evils.

Assuming that the leak is controlled in the short term. If it goes until December then...

On a personal note...

Just read that the P'cola beaches have been struck, it finally has 'hit home' for me I guess. I used to live in Pensacola and I absolutely fell in love with the area and have never, ever (having gone 'round the world via the ocean on several occasions) ever seen more beautiful beaches.

This is really really sad.
