I have to say this season they have had a couple great scenes where Sheldon is a relatable human beings. Adds a whole level of pathos to his character that is usually lacking.

If you watch the pilot, it's the intention to have him be relatable, it's only shortly thereafter that he is trumped up into the far fetched caricature that we now expect

I compare it to Cosmo Kramer, who was also made more extreme after the pilot. It's a well defined phenomena in situation comedy that people are most amused by things that are extremist. In the past it was often done with simpleton characters, & accentuating their stupidity to absurd & even unrealistic levels for laughs, Woody Boyd, Ernie (Coach) Pantuso, Joey Tribbiani, Kelso, Tony Banta, Rose Nylund, Chrissy Snow, Ed Norton. There's hundreds of examples of a sit-com having one character that is the "Dumb one".

In fact, you can chart the ratings of "The Simpsons" & you'll notice that the seasons with the highest viewership were seasons that Homer is the most dimwitted. Early on he wasn't so at all, & later on he wasn't as much. Mostly it was during the years Conan O'Brien was the producer & "D'oh" became a catch phrase

And there's no diminishing returns either. A show that puts in multiple extremist characters, even of the same kind, like the dumb ones, can actually do even better. Look at Married With Children. It ran for like a decade, & pretty much every character was an idiot. The same holds true for my favorite show "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia" Those people take the cake on extremism

A show is really creative when they can use some other trait as the extreme gag, & in Big Bang's case, they struck gold with an uber Nerd. The sitcom nerd or dork being a time tested archetype as well, with such examples as Gilligan & Urkel, but they really had something when they could put a nerd in that outdid an entire cast of nerds & then set it to an actual nerd reality like science

That takes talent & intellegence, & though it's nice on occasion to intersperse some normalcy into the characters, it's probably not wise to stray too far from the formula that made them successful

Amy stared out as an extreme as well, & since she is not the extremist main focal that Sheldon is, they were able to change her to a more relatable character. I don't see them being successful if they try that with Sheldon too much

excellent analysis as usual mojo

I'm always amazed at the pilot when I rewatch it. Can you imagine Sheldon at a sperm bank?

It's been a while since I saw the pilot, but what I remember finding odd was the almost normal rapport between Leonard & Sheldon

I loved the Walkind Dead reference last week. Shows they are paying attention. It would be better if they mentioned it in reference to Sheldon's old roommate though
