So, watching the second season of dexter I came up with a little theory. More and more flashbacks of harry were seen in the second as in the first. Harry taking Dexter hunting and encouraging him to kill animals with a knife. Harry telling dexter about how he will have "urges" and how to manage them. What if Dexter did not naturally have these urges? What if it was Harry making assumptions about how dexter would develop based on a biased view of psychopaths he had seen on the job? What if Harry actually implanted these ideas into Dexter's head? There are psychopaths all over the place. You probably have met a few. Not many of them turn into serial killers. It's entirely possible that Dexter was "taught" to be a murderer by Harry when he never would have been that in the first place. now I know, what about his brother the serial killer. His brother was raised in a mental institution. Not exactly the loving home Dexter was. It could have been the institution that turned the brother into a killer and not the incident that killed their mother. |

It's plausible, but I seem to remember that Harry wasn't doing anything until he noticed some rather peculiar tendencies in Dexter, as a very young child So I don't know if you could entirely blame Harry, but he certainly did play a large role in the development. It is certain that many psychopaths never harm anyone, solely because they know that they will get caught Harry gave Dexter a sense of training & preparedness that took away that barrier, & empowered him to actually do it So in that way Harry has some blood on his hands, which is why he likely killed himself |

I seem to remember Harry catching child Dexter after having killed & tortured some animals or something like that (A bird maybe), & he questioned him, & found out that Dex had dark urges, from a very early age I'm not sure what episodes, but it was very early on in season one, I think |

That's what I'm saying. He jumped the gun. He automatically assume that Dex would absolutely act on his urges, instead of becoming like countless other maniacs who control them, for fear of being caught He took a blunt tool of violence, & turned it into a honed sharpened instrument of untraceable murder |

I loved the way the last couple episodes of the second season showed us again what a monster he was. He had become so humanized and sympathetic throughout the season and we had become so used to seeing him kill that it was no longer shocking. Showing the horrified reaction of Harry and the cop guy (who's name escaped me) brought home what he was really doing. I think they did that at the begining of the season as well when they silently showed just how many plastic bags were at the bottom of the ocean. |

Never seen the show. From the description here, I have to ask if Harry could have been a killer as well. |

It's a Showtime show, & their not as offering with their shows as say CBS or NBC are with Lost or Heroes So far, the only place I have found that has full episodes is http://www.yidio.com/show/dexter It's where I just watched the first four episodes of season three, & they have some links to season one & two Each season is only 12 one hour episodes |

I don't think so. I think it's more that Harry was a frustrated cop, who was tired of criminals getting off, & when he realized that Dexter had homicidal tendencies, he used it as an opportunity to instill a moral code into Dexter, so that he'd only kill murderers, essentially encouraging him to be a vigilante Here's a bit of a spoiler back story Harry, Dexter's adoptive father, was the cop who found him when he was a near toddler, at the scene of his own mother's horrific murder. Dexter saw his own mother killed gruesomely. Harry adopted him, in hopes that he could help him recover from the incident, & give him a normal life. When he realized that Dex had homicidal tendencies, & it was only a matter of time before he acted on his violent side, he trained him to control himself, as best he could, he instilled in him a moral code, & he taught him how to not get caught being a vigilante, Hence why Dex has become a pretty darn good forensic scientist Here's the thing though. In season two, we find out that Harry already knew Dex's mom. In fact she was his snitch, & was turning over info on drug dealers she knew, in order to get help from him to get out & have a better life for Dex When she was discovered as a snitch, she was murdered, & now I'm thinking Harry adopted Dex, because he felt responsible for his mother's death |

don't forget she was sleeping with Harry. Hell if he hadn't done that dna test on the dead guy I would say harry was really his father. |

All I'm going to say is that I'm just finished with the second third of season 3, & this show is still a damn powerhouse. Episode 7 has one of the best moments in all three seasons, at the end I'm totally hooked again, & waiting eagerly for the last 4 episodes
