 but the people on the ship were inherently evil. They were slave traders and criminals. Maybe Ricardo was the only person not inherently evil and that was why he lived. And then smokie tried to entice him to do evil.

slave trading wasn't inherently evil then and the crew would have been separate from the slave owners.

Maybe Jacob was just upset that the ship crashed his statute.

1867 according to Mojo, but we are talking saving someone from a death sentence not the common trading of a subset of people.

slavery is slavery and probably worse then death. The abolitionist movement in Britain dates back to the late 18th century so it was an old concept by 1867. And I think the whole concept of inherently evil means it is evil no matter what the culture is.

It is a culturally tied construct. People used to sell themselves into slavery.

And am I remembering correctly that the commandos mostly got away from blackie with injuries.

5 of them escaped Smokie, in what appeared to be an attack instigated by Ben, as if Ben was somehow involved with Smokie, at that time

Of course, all but Keamy ended up dead anyway, when Richard, Kate & Sayid attacked them with a group of Others

So, like I was saying, maybe it was the slaves that Jacob wanted to come to the island, but Whitfield stabbed all of them, except Richard

I really have to wonder about the people who get destroyed by Smokie instantly. Is it because they are so obviously horrible people, that they don't even require the judgment period, that someone like Eko got?

The original pilot didn't seem so bad, but who knows? Maybe he was

Who is to say they get killed instantly?

it may seem instantly to you or me.. but to the one being "judged" by smoky.. everything might flash before their eyes or seem to take much longer.

thats what I think anyway.. I think everyone that smoky kills is judged before dieing.

I don't necessarily disagree, but Eko chased around Yemi for quite a while, & assuming Yemi was really Smokie, similar to the way he appeared as Alex, to Ben, That was just a really long time

No speculation on how Keamy escaped smokie, or were there just that many more commandos originally?

I think you are probably right about Whitfield killing the slaves that Jacob was bringing. Still doesn't explain why he wouldn't have helped Richard out a little before blackie returned.

But if Jacob was only going for the slaves, it could be that blackie can destroy anyone who isn't on Jacob's list. If someone is on the list, then they have to get a full judging.

Never gave much thought to the mercenaries escaping Smokie, but it is peculiar

that's as good a theory about Smokie's judgments, as any

I wonder what's locked away. Could it be Desmond?

:boots:

They never had me fooled on that one :p
I started thinking that it was him, when we first saw the locked door, on the sub

Saw a clip of fake locke and kid Jake where kid Jake says Locke can't hurt Sawyer. It would seem the list is the saving grace from blackie.
