If they were pirates a lot were well educated noblemen looking for a way to increase their cash flow. I remember the comment but I didn't take it literally. How could the army fire someone?

Uncivilized is harsh, but the pirate ship was old, and they seemed quite capable with later...technology. Not that they weren't the pirates as well, but they were connected with their current world before the Army arrived.

That's the thing that is sticking with me. When Richard interviews Juliet, he is well versed with even newer modern technology, & even modern science & medicine. It stands to reason, that he learns about it in the times he exists, whether he's been there throughout, or he is shifting there Richard is very old, according to Juliet, but I still don't think he does not age. At this point, I could be getting warm with my theories,... or they could be complete rubbish but of this much I'm certain. And there are multiple copies of them. So if sawyer and locke run into each other in the forest it could be the present sawyer meeting the future locke, or the present locke meeting the past sawyer. That is why they may or may not know things. This show is so confusing but I love it! I have no idea what is happening but I love it! You folks are cool with your analogies but you confuse me more.... I have no recollection of anyone wanting to cut Juliet's hand-off. Was that last season? I don't remember ANYthing about Adam & Eve in Season 1. I am currently rewatching the series from the beginning on the Sci-Fi channel on moday nights. They run four episodes from 7:00- 11:00 PM.....I tape it & watch on the weeekend.
