Maybe you're thinking of the twilight movies? Not too crazy about those "werewolves" , but for some strange reason I like those movies.

What I meant was Benicio Del Toro is a helluva good actor, been in lots of stuff, and always felt he did a bang-up job. Was laughing cos I really don't see him as that kind of thing/character. Anthony Hopkins will always be Hannibal Lecter to me he nailed that role, whilst Hugo Weaving will always be Agent Smith (Matrix) or Elrond (LOTR) though he did a superb performance in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert many years ago. |

![]() Titanic, but without the big-budget special effects, or the excellent Celine Dion music tracks. Also manages to avoid the overlong buildup of guests arriving, taking their cabins/staterooms, getting to know them so we know whether to like 'em or not, or di-da-di-da-di-da-whatever-go-to-the-pub-for-an-hour-come-back-when-it-gets-interesting kinda thing. This does away with most of the entree, and goes straight for the main course, and filmed in an almost matter-of-fact way so we are left to make up our own minds about the characters, which I liked. So, the plot.... The (rather tasty-looking) cruise ship Poseidon on a New Years cruise, is hit by a freak wave and capsizes, and a small band of survivors makes it out alive and are rescued. Yup, that's it. However, the story is rather more elaborate than that, of course. With solid performances from Josh Lucas, Kurt Russell and Richard Dreyfuss, this movie trots along merrily enough as they negotiate the big set-piece disasters (fire, explosions, windows shattering and the sea rushing in, etc), and after her role in The Day After Tomorrow I would have thought Emmy Rossum would have had enough of disasters and being soaked to the skin, but she gives another sterling performance here as Russell's teenage(?) daughter. So, ok, it's a well-worn format that tries to crank-up the tension (and succeeds occasionally, especially when they are trapped in a rapidly-flooding ventilation shaft, and a cross has a crucial role as a screwdriver), but at no time does it pretend to be something it isn't. No, it doesn't have the stellar cast of the original Poseidon Adventure, nor the complexities of character of Titanic, but it benefits from that imho and simply presents the disaster as it would likely happen. Most certainly I've seen worse, and now this is in my collection I'll certainly watch it again, so I give it **** |

Shutter Island One of the scariest movies I have ever seen. And it just keeps getting scarier. Hard to watch though. The kind of movie you want to watch again as soon as it's over to check for clues. I did figure out partially what was going on about 3/4 of the way through but the ending still blew me away. |

The Shadow (sorry no poster available). Alec Baldwin as a Tibetan drugs baron, reformed by ancient Buddhist spirit (yay) into superhero The Shadow to fight crime etc. in New York of the 20's/30's complete with stylish lady friend and extensive organisation of 'helpers'. In this movie, some ancient relative of Gengis Khan is revived and plans to take over the world by blowing up a beryllium atom bomb (?) designed by scientist Ian Mackellan (Gandalf), and only The Shadow can stop him (of course). Sorry, can't remember all the actors' names, too busy enjoying movie to care. But noticed Ethan Phillips (Neelix from Voyager) in a bit role as a security guard. (If you liked Voyager's 'Captain Proton' eps, you'll feel right at home here !) Tim Curry camps it up as only he can as the embittered scientist with a crush on The Shadows girl (Mackellan's daughter). Not a movie to challenge our perception of reality, instead get a big bucket of popcorn, put reality on hold for a coupla hours, sit back and let it wash over you. Enjoy. **** |

![]() The kids and I saw this Friday, and were very encouraged by the review we read on Entertainment Weekly's website. They gave it an A. It was wonderful. Easily fits in right along with the other two, and there are many laughs, and quite a few tears shed too. Bring your tissues, and be prepared to be thoroughly entertained. It's awesome. |

![]() Sequel to 11 (figures), though not as good imho. This was generally rubbished by the critics, and it's easy to see why; on a single viewing you're not really sure just wtf it's about. But, see it a few times, get to know the plot, and the little nuances of the con become obvious. This is not about planning a con of a screen target as in the first movie(though that happens, several times), it's actually a con of the audience watching the movie. Basically, don't take anything that happens too seriously, just sit back and let it wash over, and enjoy Julia Roberts playing Clooney's wife playing Julia Roberts (don't ask), also a guest appearance by Bruce Willis (as himself). It's not until the last 20-30 mins of the movie (after the black Range Rovers show up), that the con is revealed. I've writen plays along very similar lines to this movie, where the audience are 'fooled', deliberately so, and this movie is a fine piece of crafting (imho). However, it fails in that it tries to be too cute for it's own good and for that reason I give it *** |

![]() Documentary (narrated by Ted Danson) charting the ongoing decline/collapse in the global fish stocks, especially Atlantic cod and Bluefin tuna, but does include all species. Not an easy movie to watch, especially to anybody with a conscience, or hates seeing blood. At one point in the 90's Newfoundland banned all trawling for cod, to give the species a chance to recover, which the people and fishing fleet loudly protested about loss of jobs etc. However, some years later, a trawler set a couple of long-lines of hooks to test recovery and the result was barely a basket-load, so with nothing to catch the people lost their jobs anyway !! More recently, with the introduction of fish farms, millions of anchovy are ground-up to make food to feed hundreds of salmon. Hmm, millions of anchovy, hundreds of salmon.....so why don't we eat the anchovy instead ?? It's in plentiful supply and it's better for us. The reason, anchovy is sold by the ton, whereas salmon has a premium price attached to it and so makes better profits. (All hail the great god money !!) Many countries are restricting the amount of fishing in their waters, giving declining stocks a chance to recover, though many countries still violate catch limits and restrictions as a fine is usually lower than the value of the fish when they get away with it. Now, I'm not asking you, or trying to get you to stop eating fish, far from it (I like it too). Just pointing out the situation at the moment, and how we can help (if we want to). The Marine Stewardship Council have placed a blue tick on tuna tins to show they came from sustainable stocks, and supermarkets (especially Wal-Mart) are also only selling fish etc from sustainable sources. There are also 3 steps we can take to help stop the decline; Step 1 - Ask before you buy, only eat sustainable seafood Step 2 - Tell politicians, respect the science and cut the fishing fleets Step 3 - Join the campaign for marine protected areas and responsible fishing. It would be devastating to our lives if the oceans were barren and lifeless, and not just for food; many companies depend upon fish and marine life to provide what they need to make cosmetic products, and those omega 3 fatty acid pills we need for health, and cod liver oil have to come from somewhere, they can't be made artificially. As the population increases the need for enough food to feed the world becomes an ever-more immediate concern, by helping the oceans to survive now we can help to guarantee that food supply for the future. |

cod is a very slow growing fish. And it has been over fished for centuries. Long before canada was a country. There are reports of ships actually slowing down and stopping because there were so many fish in the waters. And of baskets being lowered over the edge and coming up full of fish. |

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time The end didn't make much sense to me. The hourglass thing still got stabbed and the world didn't end. This confuses me. But aside from that, it was pretty interesting and had well choreographed fight scenes (imho) Plus, Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton are hot. Letters To Juliet A bit cheesy, but fun and uplifting. The story was pretty predictable as you'd expect from a rom com, but still engaging, and the scenery was beautiful. Plus, ya know, there's the hotness of Amanda Seyfried and Chris Egan. That helps with interest factor.

Shrek Not as good as the first two and better than the third one. Enjoyable, but nothing special. The A-Team No attempt at a plot or realism...exactly the way the A-Team should be. Loved it. But I wish they hadn't done that annoying thing where they cut between discussion of the plan and the carrying out of thte plan. It was confusing and interrupted the flow of the scene. Also didn't like the score much. Nothing can beat the original theme.
