The Matrix Trilogy (Matrix/Reloaded/Revolutions).

I wrote an assesment of this series, then realised it was way too long. Not an easy series to review, mainly because it works on so many different levels and concepts, I could write reams. If you've seen it you'll know what I mean, and if you haven't I recommend you do so. You won't see the world in the same way again !!

Reloaded was a decent follow up, but Revolutions was a major disappointment IMO. Neither sequel really measures up to the original for me.

Im not a fan of Tarentino.. too much gore for me.
There was definitely less gore than I expected though.

It was an ok movie.. Im sure most people would love it.
I think I have bad taste in movies anyway..lol

I watched X Men Origins: Wolverine recently. It's not the greatest movie in the world, but I don't think it was as bad as they said it was. I liked it well enough.

I Can Do Bad All By Myself A lot deeper than the previous films (at least for me) But a bit cookie cutter ..at least enjoyable with the comic relief. That Adam Rodriguez es muy caliente!!

Yeah, would agree with all of that.

The original was mindblowing, but sadly the others less so. Taken as a whole, though, I was impressed.

Duplicity
Wasn't even sure what type of movie it was, but it turned out to just be a classy spy movie - not so much comedy or romance. Well past a triple cross with a constant rift between our 2 main characters wondering when the double cross would come. They kept it clear where they were at the time though, so it isn't like the movie left you confused after the first viewing and you had to rewatch to understand it.

And they tell you what the biggest thing in the world is.

Julia Roberts and Clive Owen. Biggest thing in the world is hair. Apparently the second is frozen pizza with ham and pineapple.

Ok, I can see that, thanks mate.

Disagree about the second; pizza with pepperoni wins every time.

Earth

Had to force the kids to sit down and watch this. But once a couple minutes had gone by they were hooked. Typical nature type show with a better production value and hd. Nice little bit over the credits where they show you how they filmed some of the shots.

State of Play

Really great movie. All the cast was superb and it's one of those were all the supporting characters you recognize from somewhere. The main characters have a rich background that isn't explained to death. Only time you have to suspend disbelief is to accept that Ben Afflick was Russel Crowe's college roommate.

Not only is this a great mystery, but it works as a homage to the disapearing newspaper. And disapearing "real" news. There is the old traditionalist reporter butting heads with and teaching the new "blogger" on staff. During the credits there is a very loving look at the production of the front page of the newspaper from the creating of the prototype to the loading of the trucks.

State of Play
Russell Crowe and Ben Affleck in a political intrigue mystery. Acting seemed to go okay, but it was long and drawn out. It looked like the writer's wanted to trash one side or the other as far as real politics go, but the story didn't seem to work out the way they wanted. At first, it seemed like the movie was just going to be a rip on journalism being replaced by bloggers and other less reputable sources. But dude was so in bed with his own political interest that the blogger was getting more scoops.

Just noticed how opposite of Wissa's review mine is. Oh well.

Inglourious Basterds

Ok, I've been mulling whether I was going to put out any reviews of this movie or not, but since it's the only recent movie I've seen in a while. I guess it's worth getting the word out. I have counted myself as a fan of some of Tarantino's previous films. Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, & even Kill Bill, all entertained me greatly, but this one just seems to miss the mark on multiple levels

First, It just doesn't know what it wants to be. The opening is trying to be gripping Holocaust drama, but then we seem to get thrown into what seems could only be a parody of multiple types of war movies. I just can't tell if it wants you to take these characters seriously, or as spoof, & by the end, it is beyond impossible to consider it anything but parody, & sadly it's poorly executed parody at that

Secondly, I've come to expect a certain amount of verbosity from a Tarantino movie, but at least in past films you are already invested in the characters enough to be interested in their thoughts, even the most irrelevant of them, & Quentin sure loves them to be irrelevant. More importantly, At least they were speaking ENGLISH! Reading it in subtitles is doubly mind numbing.

Thirdly, the acting is not all that great. Brad Pitt, who is the main star attraction is slathering on a goofy southern accent, which never seems to settle in and fit, on top of the fact that he spends the whole film mugging at us in some attempt to parody old style actors like Clarke Gable or something. The most well played performance comes from the loathsome lead Nazi character, who chews up the screen, in another farcical exaggeration. None of the other performances stay with you much at all

In the end, it's one of the weakest stories he's ever worked with, that unsuccessfully tries to patch together elements from past war movies he liked. Even the title is misleading, since the characters to whom it refers aren't even the main focus of the story, & are just a garnish to this piecemeal Frankenstein of a movie. I'm not even going to get into how overtly graphic this movie is, because in past situations where Tarantino used these types of shock tactics, it at least found merit in being integral to the point of the film

This film had no point, so the graphic violence was just absurd, telegraphed, hamfisted & actually rather putrid, especially in comparison to his earlier films

You Don't Mess With The Zohan

Typical Adam Sandler movie with all of his friends in it along with him. Sandler plays an Israeli Commando who wants to quit to become a hairdresser and work for Paul Mitchell in New York City. But instead, he finds a job in a salon owned by a Palestinian beauty. He soon gets a cult following from the local older women (who he has sex with once he does their hair) and it was a lot funnier than the trailers or commercials depict.

I actually liked Zohan more than I thought I would. It's obviously not his best comedy, but it wasn't as bad as you might think

District 9. I was really impressed with this film. I thought the concept was original and really thought-provoking, the CGI was outstanding, the acting fantastic (especially the guy who played Wikus...and especially considering it was his first proper acting job).

I did find it very distressing to watch though. there were a couple of places where I almost walked out because I didn't think I could carry on watching it. The first was where they're getting Wikus to shoot the gun in the biolab and they bring in the prawn to be the target...and the second was when they were beating Christopher Johnson at the end.

But definately one of the more original sci-fi's I've seen in the last few years.
