Blackfish - Documentary about Sea World and the issues behind keeping captive orcas. Victoria makes a guest appearance in the film as the first home for "Tillicum" the orca that recently killed a trainer at Sea World, Fl. As far as documentaries go, this is a fairly effective piece of work that lays out the case against captive whales. Actually, the film describes an utterly horrific industry that should leave you questioning weather or not you'll ever patronize such a place anymore.

Saw Hobbit 2 over the break.

First off - my husband LOVED it and wants to see it again. We never do that, so, for him, it's A#1 amazing, but he's also an effects guy, so he ranks it above LOTR:ROTK and I definitely don't see that.

As for me, I confess that, these days, I watch TV and film with a writer's eye, so I look at where a production team has cut corners or saved money, or where the writers missed opportunities or took liberties, etc. Seeing the same sets for The Prancing Pony was good as that makes sense. The city sets were similar to Minas Tirith (the white city) and the like. In-universe, it makes sense that the architectural styles would be similar but it seemed to me to be too close. And Smaug's lair was a LOT like Moria and that, to me, clanged. It felt unimaginative, but it is supposed to be dwarfish architecture and these are similar locales so I'm probably just being nitpicky.

The addition of Tauriel was all right (now I really don't want to hear anyone ever bitching about the supposed illegitimacy of fan fiction ever again, seeing as she is a creation of Jackson, Walsh, etc). The movies definitely need more female heroes (and Tolkein wrote nearly no women - the imbalance is really, really glaring). Adding in a romantic subplot mainly served to look like, to me, a blatant attempt to squelch Kili and Legolas slash.

I thought the acting was all right. I don't see Cumberbatch as being an amazing Smaug or the like, but I tend to not see greatness in acting done for animation, which is essentially what Smaug is. It's different with Andy Serkis's Gollum, as the CGI is actor-movement-based. But Smaug is Smaug; Cumberbatch is doing a voice-over. But keep in mind I'm not a googly-eyed fangirl about him at all. I think he's okay but not spectacular; he leaves me feeling rather meh.

In contrast, McKellan and Freeman were fantastic and really carry the film. I think Lilly and Bloom were okay. Bloom in particular they aren't showing in close-up, and that's a good thing. He's supposed to be younger here, yet of course the actor is older. But it's not just normal aging, it's more like he lived fast and it shows a bit. The difference between him in the LOTR films and now is also striking in the way the character is portrayed, that he comes across as dwarf-prejudiced (in contrast to Gimli's elf prejudice in LOTR) and so it's weird. It begs the question of what changed his mind. He's not supposed to be in The Hobbit anyway.

Showing nearly no Radogast was a good move. I like the character but there were swathes of Hobbit 1 that I really wanted to take an editing machete to. All of those bunny sleigh scenes were like that (and when I saw that film, all I could think of was that the effects probably cost a bundle so they were going to show them and not leave them on the cutting room floor, dammit). Once again, Cate Blanchett did about five minutes' worth of work.

The ending was a cliffhanger but it's not really a spoiler because, if you've read the books or seen the LOTR films, you know who survives or at least you have an idea of that. Hence it's harder to get too emotionally invested.

Don't misunderstand me - the film was good (probably better than most things that are out) and the effects, scenes, costumes and makeup were really beautiful. Peter Jackson, etc. are probably the best people to bring Tolkein's vision to life, and to effectively update it for our time. But at the same time, it continues to feel like the story is padded and is a money grab. I don't like feeling that way about films.
Once Ixalla was ready, Tathrelle cornered her. “Before we leave for work, I just want to tell you, I’m sorry. I guess I sort of shut down last night. I know you were in pain and I wasn’t too terribly supportive.” There was a wall covering in the main part of their chamber, something that Tathrelle hadn’t noticed before. She stared at it for a second and then shook her head.

Outside, a disembodied voice announced from a hidden speaker, “It is time to travel to all daytime places of employment. Transportation sleighs are available and ready. Citizens are encouraged to thank the sleigh drivers at the end of a successful transport. The government recommends haste, and requests that all pregnant persons be given preference for seating in their designated areas.”

A little distracted, Ixalla just asked, “Pain?”

Untrustworthy - by me, actually. It's for sale on Amazon

Flash Gordon

The 1980 version, we're watching it now on digital, totally cheesy but amusing. The best bit is the theme music by Queen !!

I saw The Hobbit last night too. Thanks for telling me who Cumberback was. I saw him in the credits and was like really? I didn't mind it, and my 11 year old loved it. A little long. And see my comments on the previous one about the ending.

Also saw Elysium. Loved it.

The Hobbit left me wishing they made three films for each of the LOTR books. But, I love all the films.

drew: the man behind the poster

a documentary about the man who did the movie posters for the star wars, indiana jones & back to the future movies. (plus a bunch of other movies, album covers & book covers) interesting stuff, IMHO.

Oz The Great & Powerful

Why do people keep thinking James Franco can act? This idea had potential, but the script was really weak, & so is most of the cast, none more than Franco though. He's like a Tootsie-Pop with no Tootsie Roll in the center. He has no charisma whatsoever. They could've found any number of charismatic comedy/drama crossover actors to play Oz, Jack Black, Will Ferrell, Owen Wilson, Robert Downey Jr. I don't know, if they're all cut out for it, but any of them would've been better than Franco

Saw Grudge Match yesterday, with DeNiro & Stallone. It was OK. Nothing to get excited about. The acting was good, the humor was weak (I can't stand Kevin Hart), the story was a bit stale, but the fight scenes were kind of fun. It's like they were putting a spin on their famous boxer roles, for what that's worth

However, they went out of their way to sidestep anything that could be tied to the old movies though. It might've been interesting to at least give them the same nicknames, The Stallion & The Bull......... We'll........ Maybe

saw most of iron man 3 yesterday when my brother was watching it & i was poking around on the internet.

it's an enjoyable movie RDJ is great as always, but i think my brother was right when he said: "it wasn't iron man 3, it was tony stark 1. "iron man" was hardly in it at all."

Just watched The Monuments Men. It was fairly entertaining, albeit really dumbed down & over simplified. It was only 2 hours long, which meant they missed out on a lot of valuable story in this historical event, but there was also a lot of superficial, non-relevant scenes, which was even more costly to the story. I think it could've benefitted from another 30-50 minutes screen time, & a more thoughtfully reworked script

Having said that, the cast is just a pleasure to watch, & deserve almost all the credit in making this an entertaining movie to watch

I Dream of Jeannie: 15 Years Later: Barbara Eden is back! Well at least in 1985.

It was ok, and as far as reunion movies went it was alright. Jeannie is very tame in this one, and is missing the spark she had in the original 1960's series. Larry Hagman did not return, and therefore Tony was replaced by Wayne Rogers (M.A.S.H.). Both Bill Daily (Roger Healy) and Hayden Rorke (Dr Bellows) Both make a return, however Rorke only makes a Cameo appearance at Tony's retirement party and in a restaurant scene, when Jeannies magic get Tony into trouble one last time ....

It needed Larry Hagman, there was absolutely no chemistry between Wayne Rogers Fake Tony and Jeannie. And the ending was a bit sad if anything. And I Dream of Jeannie should never have a sad ending!

If you are a fan of the original series you might get a laugh or two. Maybe three if your lucky. Otherwise I'd steer clear of it. You can find the entire movie on youtube, although the quality kinda sucks, you can get the DVD on amazon.com

We watched this the other night, and I've seen it a couple times now but Madam hasn't, and being of Jewish descent there were a few tears during the Auschwitz scenes. Overall, an excellent movie, and filmed in black and white only added to the stark reality. Liam Neeson in the lead role was awesome !!

Yeah agreed, should definitely be on everyone's "to watch" list. And for the record, Madam wasn't the only one shedding tears !!
