Orson Welles' The Trial (1962) Starring Anthony Perkins & Orson Welles

Based on the book by Franz Kafka, The Trial is the story of a mild mannered office worker being arrested, and hopelessly prosecuted on unknown charges by an inaccessible , and overwhelming authority

I'd never had the chance to see this classic film before, and queued it up on Netflix the other day. As abstract as the plot & dialogue are, it's still possible to stay interested & keep up with this film. There's a dreamy, nightmare quality about it that is unlike anything ever filmed. Plus, this film is a master class in black & white cinematography. Imagery the likes of which I've never seen before.

Visually, I'd say this film is even better than Welles' other classic, Citizen Kane, though on the whole the latter is a better all around film achievement

If you love Citizen Kane, like me, then you'll love this too. If you think Kane is overrated, as some do, then you'll likely not care for this either, but I was astounded.

The Lady Vanishes (1938)

In one of Alfred Hitchcock's early British films, a young woman & her male acquaintance struggle to unravel a plot aboard a train traveling through Europe, that has resulted in the disappearance of an old woman

For it's time this movie is wonderful. Some of the scenic shots are clearly done with incredible models of marvelous detail. The film holds up well enough to a modern sensibility, imo. It has suspense, some action & even comedic elements, culminating in quite possibly the quaintest shootout finale in all of film history, it being almost humorous in the reserved reactions of some of the British chaps on board, while guns are blasting

"Quite a nasty jam, this. I don't like the look of it."

"Yes. Something of a predicament, indeed."

Anyway... for an old timey kind of movie, that takes some time setting up the story & introducing the characters before things get rolling, I still rather enjoyed it

Steven Seagal is ex special forces turned environmentalist with a conscience, Michael Caine is the oil company boss who wouldn't know how to spell conscience, determined to get as much oil out of Alaska as he can whatever the cost - until he tries to kill Seagal. Cue the big set-piece fighting scenes as Seagal demonstrates his full repertoir of martial arts skills, very ably assisted by Joan Chen as a member of the First Nation people who's land the oil is on !!

I've seen reviews criticising the environmentalist messages, saying it's not so much explained as bashes us over the head with them, and Seagal's 'lecture' at the end of the movie totally unnecessary. I disagree, I like the movie exactly as it is, and think it is Seagal's finest movie !! *****

So I saw Oblivion. A good looking film with some memorable visuals. Tom Cruise and Andrea Riseborough are a couple stationed on an Earth irradiated and ruined following a failed alien invasion. Their job is to oversee the automated extraction of seawater to provide fusion power for a new colony on Titan, where what remains of humanity is headed. Because the alien scavengers still linger on the surface, the pair's memories have been erased of their lives before the mission to prevent any intelligence falling into enemy hands. Their only point of contact is a controller at mission HQ, which is an enormous pyramid shaped space station in orbit (this weird looming structure is the most visually striking element of the film, hanging in the sky above most of the action).

It's a film that relies on shocking plot twists every five minutes, which is fine except it's so derivative of any number of other films that you'll guess most of it well in advance. Some of it is even spoiled in the trailer. I saw bits pinched from 2001, Independence Day, Total Recall, Silent Running, Terminator, etc etc.

Overall not a terrible film. If you're tempted, try to catch it on the big screen rather than buying the DVD. I'm not sure it's something you'd be desperate to see more than once.

Also if you're a fan of Game of Thrones, somebody I wasn't expecting pops up about a third of the way in and I started enjoying the film a lot more.

Princess Diaries 2 & NuTrek

I'm in a good mood but right now I just can't get enough of looking ( :fgirl: ) at Chris Pine so I thought I'd watch the couple of movies I own that he's in.

I'm a bit of a sap when it comes to Disney romcoms so love PD2 so much & it's actually Chris Pine's first film :)

I've ony just started NuTrek but I would hope by now (considering the amount of times I've featured it in this thread) that you all know how I feel about it! :violet:

Broken City

Kinda slow, plot heavy drama but worth watching. Great cast and New York looks wonderful in it. It's got that less attractive than his brother Mark Walberg in it though

Uhh.... WTF ever. Guy Pierce looked like a bleached California Raisin, The extent of Charlize Theron's character was "I'm cold hearted, & take no shit, now someone screw me". The blond, creepy android guy... I don't get it, & I think there were other people in the movie too

Life of Pi.

To be honest I'm feeling quite traumatise by it all, so is my mum. Yet it's another movie my dad loved & he's the only reason we ended up watching it. I wasn't bothered about seeing it & neither was mum.

Mum & I are now watching Big Bang to cheer ourselves up!

trek nation

a documentary about gene roddenberry's son trying to understand this whole trek thing & in the process, finds out about his dad.
interesting, IMHO. with old interviews, behind the scene footage of TOS, roddenberry home movies and some new interviews from a few trek "names" including rick berman, nichelle nichols, d.c. fontana, ron moore & a (brief) one with scott bakula

How weird, I watched that today!

I thought it was interesting as well & felt so sorry for Eugene as I got the impression by the end he almost was feeling guilty for not being as interested when he was younger & now he's having to learn about his dad from other people, especially when Wheaton told the story of how Gene had stuck up for him!

crossing the line

a documentary about an army private who deserted to go to north korea in the 1960s (also talks about 3 others who did the same) and ended up in an 20-part propaganda film as an evil american.
kind of interesting to hear from this guy as to why he did what he did & about his life over there.
