The Croods

Took the boys to see this Saturday night. 3d and everything! It was actually a pretty good movie. Better than a lot of the animated stuff I've seen lately. I loved that the lead character girl wasn't all pocahontased up. And by that I mean she wasn't a whisp with big boobs and perfect hair. She was not a typical female shape at all. Also thought it had an interesting message for the parents. Essentially, stop being so damn worried and send your kids outside. The father totally reminded me of Damar though ( the member not the character)

Real Steel

An ex-boxer, robot fighter & absentee dad (Hugh Jackman) rises in the robot fighting ranks with an underdog robot, that was found by his estranged son, soon after he takes temporary custody of him.

None of the actors are all that magnificent, the script is a bit cheesy, & the movie drags in some places, but for what it is, it's not that bad, because the action & story keeps you engaged, & overall the movie has some heart. Backed by Steven Spielberg as its executive producer, the movie delivers on a sort of B movie level

Tucker & Dale Vs. Evil

Two humble & slightly witless country boy, redneck, hillbilly types (Tudyk & Labine) get entangled in a paradoxical struggle with some very stereotypical college teens, that leads to horrifically gruesome events

Now this movie was unexpectedly entertaining & really funny, even though it's premise is complete dreck. I remember when it came out & it flopped in cinemas. I just dismissed it as crap, & not until I saw Leonard Maltin giving it a good review did I queue it up on my Netflix.

I'm glad I did. Unlike most lame horror movie spoofs, It is a wonderful parody that is actually worth something on its own too. Tudyk & Labine are the perfect comedic actors to play hillbillies that could be mistaken for psycho killers, but are actually just rural simpletons on holiday. They're like the hillbilly Abbot & Costello

If you haven't seen it, want a laugh or two, & don't mind gory mindless violence in the name of yucks, then you should check it out

Truly, I have no idea what the story is about, that flew over my head and disappeared out the door. Having said that, the almost non-stop action makes up for any shortcomings, and the amazing CGI effects left me open-mouthed !!

Don't try to make sense of it, just get yourself a large tub of popcorn (or whatever) then sit back and enjoy !! ****

Rise of the guardians Better than I expected it to be. Bad choice in naming the villain Pitch. The russian santa sounded like he was saying bitch all the time.

Argo Of course a good movie and it relies on story telling, not special effects. They show you pictures of the real people at the end and they did a remarkable job of matching the actors to them. The movie has a real sense of peril with I'm sure isn't easy when we all know how it ends.

Yeah, I know. Seen it more than a dozen times, but it's the only decent movie on digital. Just wish they'd show the other two movies for some variety !! ****

The Muppets (2011)

Wow, this movie get's beat up pretty hard over at IMDB, but I didn't think it was all that terrible. Sure it was silly & campy, even to the point of mocking itself over it, & it does fall short of the kind of magic Henson was a master at, but hey... It's a movie with puppets. There's really no reason to get your panties in a bunch because it doesn't completely capture the personality The Muppets had during the Henson years

Henson is gone, & with him went a vast amount of big hearted creativity. The world is truly more vacant of joy without him. No one would ever be capable of breathing the love & joy into those characters anywhere near as well him

Does that mean we must let them die, or could we at least try to carry on the inspiration he gave through this universe he created? There's people over there professing that Henson is rolling over in his grave over this movie, & knowing the kind of humor & geniality of the man, I really doubt that would be the case at all

There's people complaining that it betrays the format, because humans are featured alongside the Muppets, instead of the Muppets being the sole focus. That's a pretty petty gripe considering that in having some humans figure in, they manage to have something of a new plot with some heart, & having a plot with a bit of heart is what is at the core of the Muppet concept anyhow

I'd say the film is not to be taken so seriously, manages to be entertaining, & if nothing else plays well on nostalgia. Henson may not have ever MADE this movie himself, but I'd think he'd be alright with it, & I'm alright with it, because I recognize that Henson was a one of a kind artist, & therefore it's asking too much to live up to him. He'd never expect that anyhow, & would still want the world to love his creation

Freaky Friday 2003

Saw this the other day, though I've got it on DVD, I forgot how much I like it. Lindsay Lohan in this film is brilliant, both her & Jamie Lee Curtis play such good roles Though it makes me kinda sad, thinking about all the trouble Lohan has since been through, I want this Lindsay back!

My Big Fat Greek Wedding

Again another film I've got on DVD but not watched for a while. Love love love everything about this film, though there were moments at the beginning where I found myself thinking "I'm Tula!" Yeah I was having a "feel sorry for myself" day

Star Trek 2009 (NuTrek)

Yeah I have watched this yet again - it's become my go to movie when I just want to forget certain things in my life & watching Chris Pine for a couple of hours really helps me do that! :violet:

Under Siege

The Steven Seagal film, but seen it so many times we got bored half way through and turned it off. But having said that still a good film, and it's sequel Dark Territory is pretty darn good too !!

Seven Psychopaths

Not what I was expecting, & frankly I'm not even sure what I was expecting. The advertising of this movie gave a different impression than what it really is. Ultimately, it's more like a Coen Brothers black comedy, or a Charlie Kaufman screenplay, like Adaptation, Raising Arizona or The Big Lebowski, though not really as well crafted as any of those films are

That said, it's comedy has some solidly funny moments, & the movie is entertaining, although somewhat of an off-kiltered mess. The real selling point is that it boasts a lot of good acting, especially from Christopher Walken. No surprise there.

If you like absurd black comedy then it's worth a watch, & there's even some worthwhile dramatic context as well, which is another reason why I described it as off-kiltered, besides being disjointed & somewhat incomplete. It also sometimes seems to not know whether it's a comedy or drama

Probably the funniest moment is when Walken states the adage "An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind", & Sam Rockwell retorts in an almost idiototic manner "No, there'll be one guy with an eye left, because how's the last blind guy going to take out the eye from the guy with one eye left? All that guy has to do is run & hide behind a bush or something"
