It's Christmas!

Since Rachel had been asking me about sign language, I thought to make an interesting topic for all of you to read about how sign language had come about in history of deaf culture. Just ask me anything about it and I would be happy to answer all I can. I have hearing impairment and graduated in the world's only deaf college in Washington DC here in the USA with a BA degree in Advertising Art. Here is the link that gives some history on how sign language was started.

This one is about a man who started it all......

Deaf Education

This one is about the man who started the schools here in America. The college is name after him and his son.

I am trying to find a more details on them, this is what I found but not what I saw before, just a brief summary of them.

So don't hesitate to ask me anything related to deaf culture, I be happy to answer all I can. :D

i heard somewhere about how the "huddle"
started in american football. when that deaf
college would play the outer teams would look
over & see what play they were talking about.
they huddled so no one could see their signs.

Very interesting. My sister in law is hearing impaired and she teaches sign language at school and also does translating on the side. My nephew is completely deaf. I have started learning some basic signs for whenever he comes home to visit his dad.

Does he go to a residential deaf school? Or just mainstream? I went in the last two years of high school to a residential deaf school which was two hours drive from my home and stayed there for a week, go home on the weekends. I was in public school before and had problems there since there were no programs for the deaf and no interpreters for me in class. That is why I was transferred to a residential deaf school where there are signing in classes, so I could learn better than in public schools with all those hearing students. I graduated there in the deaf school in 1984.
